Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reaction 6x03

Please use one of the links at the bottom of this post to watch this video, thank you:

NOTE: aghhhh, I've just realised I watched the wrong order! My bad, today will be ep 3 of Buffy & Thursday Angel 3x03 - I will try and correct by watching 3x04 next > I hope this isn't too big of an issue but I'm a sausage! Sorry!

Hello All!

My heart is heavy! I can literally feel Buffy's pain in this. She loves her friends and family more than anything there's no doubt about that, to me it's more that she felt her purpose in life was complete & now she has returned to the grind. I loved this episode, it was a key one for sure & I can't wait to watch more!

Hope you enjoy the reaction folks. Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reaction 6x03

"Whisper in a dead man's ear, doesn't make it real." Spike knew this, too. :(

Might want to watch from 23:40 as Buffy walks past the statue and pauses briefly. You had suspected as much but they drop a clue

Jon Freezin-Rain

I forgot Spike didn't know Buffy was resurrected! The look on his face was like me seeing my receipt from the grocery store; prices are outrageous now. I'm pretty sure James Marsters slipped into his native American English for a second during the scene with Xander. I had looked away for a second and it made me whip my head back to the screen. As rattusprat so rightly pointed out, Willow is changing, and perhaps not in a good way. The first thought I had was secrets and lies. Which, by the way, is also a fantastic film by Mike Leigh released in 1996. If you haven't seen it, put it on your list. The terrific Timothy Spall and Brenda Blethyn star, if you need convincing. Spooky Buffy was bad enough but Evil Dead Anya gave me arrythmia for about 7 seconds. That thing under the carpet made me think of a hell gopher. Aaand then we get Evil Dead Dawnie. Xander had about five cups of coffee sitting right there, but he grabs a pillow to put out the fire. Oh Xander. I was happy to see Willow and Tara doing spells together too. But Willow stopping and then snapping her head up and revealing her black eyes was very dark. Willow. That last conversation between Spike and Buffy was very emotional and everything Buffy said resonated with me. A very good episode that would have been a nice Halloween treat a few weeks later. Thanks Dak!

Not only is it not a big deal that you watched this episode now, I think it makes more sense this way.

You spent a lot of time talking about Buffy, and fair enough the girl was just pulled from heaven, but we also need to talk about Willow's lies and use of magic... Last episode she killed a cute baby deer and lied about it - just Wine of the Mother from the black market. Now in this episode the sprit (in Buffy's form) says ''...Did you cut the throat? Did you pat its head? The blood dried on your hands, didn't it?'' Willow then lied to Tara that she didn't know what Buffy was talking about. It's maybe one thing to keep details of the spell from Xander and Anya (and of course Giles), but for Willow to lie to Tara...? And later Willow and Tara are carefully reciting a spell that Willow just stops, and achieves the same end by just saying one word ''solid'' with black eyes. That's some serious power. Should we be concerned about this? Was Tara right to say she was frightened of where Willow is headed in 5x19?

rattusprat

I'd forgotten that scene when Anya floats along giggling and cutting her face with the knife -- absolutely terrifying. It has a real Sam Raimi vibe, reminded me of the original Evil Dead. yikes. It's an episode of standout moments and character development but the scene that really hits me is when Spike comes to the house and sees Buffy alive again. He just becomes so still and he knows immediately what the wounds on her hands mean and there's just this touching personal connection over something that's so deeply horrific. I was pretty unsettled by Willow in this episode. I don't understand why she lies and withholds information from the gang. I get that Tara wouldn't approve if she knew all the details of the resurrection spell, but it seems more about having control by knowing things that the others don't. Likewise, she was more concerned about Buffy's lack of gratitude for what Willow did rather than empathy and concern over what she may have gone through. That said....despite some pretty heavy moments throughout this episode I am glad to see Buffy seeming more like Buffy again by the end. My heart is in a better place because of that. Thanks again for sharing your reaction with us.

So many reactors and fans are always so quick to say they're confused why the Scoobies thought Buffy was in hell - and I always find that odd. For starters, she died with all of the dimensional barriers breaking down, and numerous untold hells are appearing all around her. Her death puts those barriers up and people don't think there's any chance her consciousness/ethereal essence could get trapped on the wrong side of those barriers? This is the Buffverse! No good deed goes unpunished; which is essentially why Buffy did go to heaven. Not within the narrative of course, but from a writing perspective, the only reason to have her go to heaven is that her being ripped out by her friends is the only thing worse than her being stuck in hell.

Stargazer1682

Spike uses what he believes are Buffy's desired as a sort of guide to what he should and should not do since he doesn't have a soul to guide him. Since buffy would want him helping dawn and the Scoobies then that is were he will be.

Christopher simeon

It's never a good sign when the first thing the person you resurrected does is try to kill themself. Something I noticed is the Spike showed altruism when he helped the gang even though Buffy was gone. And guilt about not saving Dawn when he told her he wasn't going to leave her to get hurt again. Vampires aren't cookie cutter copies of each other.. The Judge wasn't able to burn Angel but was able to with Dalton because he had more humanity in him. He also was piqued that Spike and Dru shared affection and jealousy.

Bud Haven

I genuinely believe the writers' intent behind that scene was 'I can tell I'm going to die before you can find help, so please don't let me die alone'. As opposed to 'life's not worth living so don't bother saving me.' While the difference in our interpretations suggests that it could have been written better, I think intent matters when it comes to how much to judge their messaging. Fortunately in Buffy's case the intent is much clearer: she did the right thing, she came to terms with it, and her friends didn't, so now she's depressed. It's life-affirming that she wants to spare them her pain, even though it would be healthier to talk to them.

Ed Green

Such a wonderful episode. The aftermath of bringing Buffy back is complicated. Of course everyone is happy she's back, but what is the cost? Buffy was at peace and now she if forced back. I can't help but thinking about the thing she said to Dawn "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it". And now Buffy has to.

Jontor11

You hit the nail on the head regarding spike and buffy. I’ve always loved this episode! Can’t wait to see what you think about the rest of this season

Loved this reaction, as always, Dak. As far as the idea of Buffy being in Hell. In theory, where she ended up after jumping through the portal wasn't about where she deserves to go or about all the good she did. She jumped through a gateway that encompassed all the dimensions opening at once. Many of which are hell dimensions, including Glory's. She could have gone anywhere. The Scoobies easily could have been right. Buffy is studied all over the world. Universities have courses that study Buffy as a show. People have written thesis on Buffy. It's incredible the influence this show has had on the world. I don't know if I mentioned this before, but I can actually hear the influence of Buffy in the way dialogue is written in shows. The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf. Supernatural is a good example. The way Dean and Sam speak in particular, they use a lot of Buffy-isms. It's fascinating. When I have time, I'll watch some of your reactions to Supernatural and see if I can point them out.

Raven Dark

She talks to to Spike about these things, she tells him things she would never tell the people she loves because he's not a person she loves. To her, at this point, he's not even a person. She can tell him the things she can't tell anyone else because he doesn't matter. He's not important to her.

Brandon Scott

You brought up a great point with spike and buffy. She hides her vulnerabilities from the people she cares about the most. Ever since Angel and her relationship she has had a hard time being that vulnerable. Now this situation makes it even harder because her friends have made a big mistake pulling her away from heaven but she is choosing to hide it because again Buffy always feels she has to be Slayer all the time. In her mind her friends can't see her not be strong and she wants them to be happy even though she is suffering. But is hiding this from them really the best course of action? We all agreed that Riley last season should have talked to Buffy about what he was feeling not hide it just to keep her happy so shouldn't Buffy do the same with her friends?

Christopher simeon

well crafted episode. they really do slowly convince you that it actually was a hell dimension, that it must be confirmed, because they're saying it soo much. But no, they ripped her away from heaven, or atleast of what, to her, felt like heaven. On one hand, brave to never let the scoobies know, but at the same time Buffy deserves better. And her friends could help with that. I wouldn't say they glorified death. They have long since established multitudes of demensions in this show, and that not everyone goes to the same place when they die. In this case, buffy went to a place where she felt happy and complete. But thats doesn't mean that eveyrone gets that. Thats how i view it atleast.

One could make the case that BtVS 6:1,2,3 is a 3 part season opener. They are a continuous timeline of events. It does make some sense watched in order 🤷‍♂️ I have seen this mentioned elsewhere but when Buffy sent Angel to the hell dimension she sent his physical body there while in Buffy's case her body remained only her essence went .. well.. went

Jon Freezin-Rain

It doesn’t matter if your watched this before Angel 3.3 there’s not really a watch order because there isn’t any crossover aside from a few comments from Angel

Michael Matthews

Ah you brought up SPN. Spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen the end... To me, Buffy (the show) handled the death/heaven thing so much better. Because throughout SPN Dean says many times that his life doesn't matter, that he's going to die young and bloody, and what's worse is he seems to think that's what he deserves. We are given imagery of him killing himself--shooting the Dean shapeshifter in the first season, the Dean Leviathan in season 7, taking pills or giving himself a shot that will stop his heart--putting his life at risk when it was not necessary. Over and over again. Anyone who has struggled with self-worth issues, self harm or suicidal thoughts saw Dean go through these things but always make it out, always find a way to keep on fighting. Until that last episode, when he stands there and tells Sam not to call an ambulance, tears himself down verbally, says it was always going to end this way for him. He never got to get past those issues, and the show ended with him supposedly having peace in Heaven. In death. Buffy was different. Buffy wanted to live but recognized that sacrificing herself would save the world. It was a SACRIFICE giving her life, where Dean was shown to be, oftentimes, at least passively suicidal. It's horrible messaging in SPN, just horrible. Obviously not everyone sees it that way, but enough people do that I consider it problematic on SPN's side. There is so much more I could say, but I'll leave it there for now. I have really strong feelings about that SPN finale, as you can tell!

Lauran Mitchell

It's such a small element but it's so sad to see. She doesn't even hesitate to lie despite Tara's earlier reassurance it was the one place where they can be honest with each other. And considering how against resurrection spells Tara was in S5 one can wonder just how much lying did Willow do to convince her of the contrary.

DB

I'm travelling on Thursday so yay for this mistake! I love this one. I feel like the hell thing is repeated so many times because the Scoobies have to convince themselves that they did the right thing. Of course it's not morally wrong to bring back a friend stuck in a hell dimension. Angel had a mystical death resulting in hell experience so why not Buffy. It's easier to go through what they've established as wrong if you don't consider the alternative. But Willow's lies always get me. She never told them exactly the kind of stuff she will need to do for the spell, she never explained in details how horrific that spell will be. It's not a stretch to think she never mentioned the consequences or that she downplayed them. I think the sinister reason they did not tell Giles is because they knew it's wrong and shouldn't have it done it. Giles would never let them mess with life and death like that. And ngl you lost me with that SPN comparison lol But I do have 20 years of rewatching this show under my belt while I don't think SPN was good sorry :(

DB

Thank you for including my comment(s) as well. :)

Claire Eyles

I did! I copy and pasted from discord message lol...I repeat I am a sausage! Haha

DakaraJayne

I think the reason they assumed that Buffy was in hell was because she had been killed by that hell portal, rather than just because that's where she would naturally have ended up. Rather like when Angel died. Also, this show and therefore the scoobies deal with hell all the time and never with heaven - it's easy to see why they might have forgotten that that was a possibility! If they weren't thinking things through...

Jack

'What was it talking about, did you understand it?' 'Well I understood the words.' And right there is how many times now Willow has lied to Tara? Obviously the Buffy doppelganger was talking about Willow sacrificing the faun for the resurrection ritual, but instead of acknowledging that she goes with, 'I understood the words'.

Claire Eyles

Well with this mistake I'm not sure I can continue!! Lol obviously it's no big deal so don't worry about it.

Collinson

This is a one of those quite achieving, underrated type episodes for me. As a horror fan the 'haunting' elements are genuinely creepy, and the episode also serves to set in motion a number of potential plot threads and character arcs.

Claire Eyles

This is Buffy 6x03, so I'm not too sure what what the fuss is either. Perhaps realising Angel 3x03 should have been before Buffy 6x01&02, dunno.

Shaun Houghton

I am confusion. Why is this the wrong order? My internet connection is being a pain, so I haven't been able to watch this episode properly yet, but is this not Buffy episode 3? So that is the next episode that is supposed to be watched, unless I missed something?

Claire Eyles

Don’t worry about messing up the order, it’s happened plenty of times. If I remember these episodes correctly, it’s not too big a deal. A while back, a reactor mixed up 3x01 (when Buffy had run off to LA) and 3x02 (she’s back and everyone’s mad). He was so confused why she was suddenly back.

Nicholas Corgan

I sure you meant tomorrow is Grimm and Thursday is Angel ;)
