Buffy The Vampire Slayer 5x14

Please use one of the links at the bottom of this post to watch this video, thank you:

Hello All!

Spike's feelings are officially public! Buffy really didn't take it well. I was kinda surprised by her reaction but not in a, 'that makes no sense kinda way' but more in a 'I feel there is way more to this' kinda way. It made me believe that there are way more layers to this than meets the eye. Buffy's head is spinning here & I cant wait to uncover all the layers to this part of the story. I obviously loved seeing Dru again. She's a bloody riot. Harmony was jokes too! Thoroughly enjoyed this episode guys.

Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Dresden Files, easily the best Urban Fantasy series EVER, highly recommended

If you really wanna have James Marsters read you stories, he's the narrator for the book series Dresden Files on audible.

I think Whedon would have kill Spike in a heartbeat if the network had allowed it. Even more so because the audience like him. Whedon don't often shy away from impactfull moments. I agree that Riley should have stake him for real, story wise. But as they wrote a compelling role and gave it to a talented actor, I think Spike will still give us good tv, even if his presence on the show doesn't always make sense.

I caught the Tara comment this time around. Such an interesting commentary on Spike and Buffy. From almost the beginning, before she "grew" as someone more then Willow's companion, Tara has been atune to what is happening to the Slayer. She was the voice of the First Slayer, she is very ituitive about Buffy in general. She's somehow the voice of the author, the all knowing narrator, if you will. I wonder if that was intended like that, if this trend will continue. (I seriously don't remember enough of the more subtle beats of the show to know for sure.)

I gotta admit, I popped when you started singing the Drusilla theme from Buffering the Vampire Slayer podcast!

Finally caught up! I've been watching at least one reaction a night and your full reactions have saved me many hours a month. I haven't seen any of the episodes of Buffy, Grimm, etc since they first aired, so I would watch each full episode and then watch your YT reaction. The full reactions are a godsend. This was a really good episode and I LOVED the return of Dru. Like you, when I originally watched them (and now your reactions) I'll repeat words and phrases in her voice and accent as I watch. In my comment a couple of episodes ago I mentioned Willow being my favorite character with Anya second and Harmony third; Dru is definitely fourth. Now that I think about it, it's kinda weird that main characters like Buffy, Angel, Giles, and Spike aren't at the top. *shrug*

A little detail I like is when Drusilla gets free and tries to kill Buffy, she grabs her neck just like she did to kill Kendra but is interrupted before she can do the "look into my eyes" hypnosis.

Chris Warner

Yes! I love that conversation between Willow and Tara. It’s like a window directly into how the writers view Spike and Angelus and how not having a soul affects being able to love in the show.

I would say, Buffy sees Spike as hired muscle with his ear to the ground; an informant who gets the Slayers protection (or at least, consideration) and she treats him like a lackey. Is it necessarily a fair arrangement or equitable treatment? If Spike were human, he answer would be no. But he's not human. He's arguably not even on part with Merle from Angel, who as far as we know has never killed anyone. Does that justify it? It's still hard to say. Honestly, I've always felt, especially up to this point in the series, after season 4 the show strained credulity not staking Spike. Season 4 did a fairly decent job giving the Scoobies a plausible reason to keep him alive, but after his betrayal at the end of season 4, they should have dusted him; and probably a few other times to date in season 5. Like, Riley staking him with a plastic woodgrain stake? Why? Why did have that? Where did it get it and why go to that trouble? For whose benefit was it, besides freaking out the audience? And why wouldn't Riley just dust him in that moment? Why doesn't Buffy stake him here? The whole "she doesn't kill the harmless" line that usually gets thrown around is bull. He's demonstrated that he's more than capable of doing damage even with the chip; with a little more imagination he'd be super dangerous. And now you have everything that went down in this episode... come on.

I think you might have missed the conversation about The Hunchback of Notre-Dame between Willow and Tara but it was definitely the writers talking directly to the audience. Willow - "I don't see why he couldn't have ended up with Esmeralda." Tara - "It cant end like that because all of Quasimodo's actions were selfishly motivated. He had no moral compass, no understanding of right and wrong." Willow also mentions how Quasimodo worked "thanklessly" for many years at the bell tower which I think ties into the fact that at the time a lot of the audience saw Spike as this sympathetic monster. They saw the chemistry between the characters, how he was trapped between the human world and the demon world, how he helped Buffy, and etc and they started shipping them. The problem is vampires cannot experience real love. Real love is selfless and vampires, above all else, are driven by what they desire. Right and wrong don't enter into the equation. Vampires CAN experience real emotions but when it comes to love everything they do, even acts of good, are tainted because the foundation is always based on what THEY desire.

So sorry you're sick, Dak. Great reaction regardless, and to an episode I've always really liked.

Raven Dark

I love Harmony calling Dru "Morticia" especially since Mercedes McNab was in the Addams Family Values.

Buffy keeps going to Spike for help because he's a super-powered being who's handy in a fight and sometimes she needs the back-up. I think you missed that Tara's description of Quasimodo was the writers telling us about Spike: "...cause all of Quasimodo's actions were selfishly motivated. He had no moral compass, no understanding of right. Everything he did, he did out of love for a woman who would never be able to love him back. Also, you can tell it's not gonna have a happy ending when the main guy's all bumpy." You always seem surprised when Spike does something creepy or otherwise not nice even though HE IS A SOULLESS VAMPIRE!! 🙄😉 Ah well, this is not an uncommon attitude among reactors of a Spuffy persuasion. 🙂

I think you're 100% spot on about Buffy and Spike - there is absolutely some very real chemistry there, but both of them approach this so badly. Spike because he IS a monster, and while I do think he is capable of love, without a soul he's not capable of truly differentiating right from wrong. And Buffy because, as you pointed out, she rebuffs him time and again but keeps going back to him. It's really a very unhealthy situation for both of them. But now Buffy has rescinded Spike's invitation and made her feelings clear, so I'm sure that'll be the end of it, right? ;-) Hope you feel better soon!

Regards soulless vampires and feelings I personally always saw it as they are still capable of feelings like love and compassion but I think the lines are so much more blurred than for someone with a soul. For example spikes feelings here he says he loves her and I think he genuinely believes that he does but I don't think he has the things he needs to really be able to understand what love is and I think the lines between love like and obsession are so blurred to a soulless vampire that they are almost the same things and are incredibly hard to differentiate. But that's just my take. As for buffys feelings I agree with what you said I think there's that element of part of me likes this but I shouldn't, I could be wrong though. Although who doesn't like a bit of Spike lol. Loving your reactions and hope you're doing good!

Drusilla throwing a spanner in the works as usual. Buffy's relevation about this is quite well done imo. She's genually surprised, but doesn't see all that she's been doing this season asking for spike's help. Spike on the other hand takes it way to far, is indeed creepy. It reminds me very much of typical stalker behaviour. I personally would agree that there is some sort of friendship there at this point, though they ofcourse don;t want to aknowledge what it is propperly. And then Harmony, bless her non-existent soul. She's always hilarious and always brings the humour. Even though the rest of the scoobies were pretty much in the backgrounnd this episode, i like how they were put in. Willow and Tara's relationship has blossomed quite a bit and Xander is his reliable self. Even though the stuff handled in this episode is quite heavy in away, it's brought with a lot of levity and humour. Can't wait for your reaction to the next episode ;)

Once the pain is gone?

So, in say six years when "Spawn" happens, is that a good thing?

Hilarious episode. There is some irony in what you said about buffy using spike at her convenience. We have seen this before with a certain character who left this season........ Love Dru as always and Harmony. Buffy has always said that being a vampire with no soul means you can't love and she believes this because of her experience with Angel/Angelus. How could Angelus if he has the ability to love still do all those things to her. That must means vampires CAN'T love. But we see with spike with dru and with Darla that vampires can love but the love is twisted bordering on obsession and it is mostly based on the individual vampire's original self. Now spike keeps equating having a chip with having a soul because he thinks a soul just tells you what you should and should not do but it's more complicated. A soul is what helps you change by making you FEEL guilty.. The chip just makes you feel pain but once it's gone you don't necessarily change you just avoid what caused the pain. Spike is still a monster. All the things he did this episode are still bad and he still doesn't get that by the end. That is what makes him different from angel. Angel understands when he is doing bad. We saw that when he was talking to the host in 2x13.

Glad you enjoyed my comment on 5x12. Yes it was Drusilla who killed the people on the train. The pan from Buffy/Xander up to the doll with a blind fold was a clue - who else is mad enough to blindfold their dolls? From School Hard: "Miss Edith speaks out of turn. She's a bad example and will have no cakes today.... You see, Miss Edith? If you'd been good you could watch with the rest."
