Please use one of the links at the bottom of this post to watch this video, thank you:

Hello All!

A Buffy birthday episode...oh no...I'm scared! What a bloomin' episode!! I was in shock for 90% of this one. I LOVE THIS SEASON!! The way Dawn found out & how she reacted was so intense & brilliantly delivered imo. I love that Spike was with her when the news broke. Ben can be trusted questionmark?? My bad haha. Glory is scary as hell, she has no fear. Therefore I am terrified!

Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Great episode. Dawn's realization was a hard scene, and the last scene with Buffy and Dawn made me tear up just like it did 22 years ago. By the way, loving the Adidas. Dak the chav? lol

This episode proves why Buffy's the leader, Willow, Xander and Anya are the sidekicks. I kind of wonder if Tara herself could be chill independent of the group. I'd like to think so; because out of everyone, she's probably the most well adjusted, comparatively. Dawn's gift is one of the things I think about when people talk about her not being "real" or that it was just memories. Like, the shells were tangible objects from a moment in Dawn and Buffy's life that predates her; which shouldn't be able to exist if her past were just memories or fabricated. Giles notes talk about the Monks having the ability to change reality; and I think we don't appreciate the likely scope of that. Probably less Jonathan in "Superstar" and more Anya in "The Wish".

Everybody now knows everything (except for the tiny little detail of what the key is actually for!) so the stage is set. Let the revels begin. I've watched this episode quite a few times and I never noticed the connection between Glory's description of the key as green energy and Dawn's outfit! Just demonstrates how there's always something more to see on each reviewing - one of the reasons the show has lasted so long. On first airing a lot of fans were intensely irritated by Dawn. Partly because they didn't like 'kid' characters in shows and partly because she was perceived as whiny. Her screaming 'get out, get out, get out' did not help! But it was realistic. One of the strengths of the show is that it has realistic characters with human flaws. And yes, Michelle Trachtenberg did a good job here.

I think this is actually one of my favourite episodes. Dawn actually gets to show of some acting and i think she does an amazing job in this episode. Her reactions always felt genuine to me here. Imagine being 14 (or 14 yr old body + knowledge) and learn that you're "not real". instant existential crisis right there. Truly i think i like most characters' responses here. If you think about it, going to the hospital makes sense too. Like buffy said she wants answers, and the first people she saw who knew what she was seemed to be the crazy people. I also have to say that I think that Clare Kramer aka Glory, really does an amamazing job playing that character. She truly makes her feel unhinged at times and then has a nice im a god i dont care about your mere mortal problems attitude. Spike for once was right in his comments/opinions though he still had this bit of .... flair... standing outside as per usual. Spike really is the one in this episode who, as you said, talks back to buffy and says some hard truths. Regarding ben and glory. Do you think there might be some connection there? Interesting. You might just be right. I still can't decide whether season 5 or 7 is my favourite xD. lookin forward to the next one.

The only thing I feel that was left out of your commentary was Dawn's acting. I feel that this episode is where she really gets elevated from annoying kid sister and gets allowed to show more of her range. Can't wait for the next one, which is how I feel every episode because I love your reactions. But I really can't wait for the next one haha.

It's so interesting--I didn't really care for this episode when I first saw it, but now I love it. I completely missed the adoption metaphor the first time. A lot of the lines between Buffy, Dawn, and Joyce when they're talking to Dawn about what she is are things people would say in a conversation with a child who has just learned they've been adopted. Change Joyce's "You've been alive a lot longer than that to us," to, "To us, you've always been ours." Change Dawn's, "How do you know? Maybe it's just another fake memory from my fake family," to, "You have to say that. They stuck me with you, but you're not my real family." And Dawn's later line, "Don't tell me what to do, you're not my mother," is exactly what an adopted kid would say when they suddenly learn the family they've grown up with isn't the one they were born into. Speaking as someone who was adopted, the metaphor is beautifully done. And I am not a mother, but that line got me, so I can't imagine how hard it would hit someone who is a mom. Yes, Willow did stick a candle in her mouth. She was licking the icing off the end. I do that too. It's only when I started seeing reactors watch this episode that I've seen how good it really is. And, ah, yes, Ben. Your confusion over the thing with him and Glory is priceless. *Happy giggles* Keep 'em coming, Dak. Season five is my favorite season of Buffy, and I can't wait to see you react to the rest. So much goodness still to come.

Another great episode. I love this season of Buffy so much.

For me the 'key' part of this episode (pun sort of intended), the most heartwarming part, is that, as Buffy says, Dawn 'is' her sister. Her origin, her biology, doesn't matter. The love and relationship between them is what makes them family. Much like is true of Tara in the 'Family' episode from earlier this season.
