Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reaction 4x16

Please use one of the links at the bottom of this post to watch this video

Hello All!

I didn't want this episode to end!!! These are the types of episodes I live for. Comedy, drama, action & emotion - bloody brilliant! The way Sarah & Eliza played this was perfect! The mannerisms, the lines, they sold it & I bought it 100%. I enjoyed so much that I would have liked them not to 'solve' the issue so darn quickly!

Look forward to reading your comments as always, have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reaction 4x16

Comments

Dakara (on seeing Riley in the opening credits): "Wait, how long has he been in the titles?" Only six episodes, while you've been enjoying your theme-music dance (and us, too)

Todd Bolton

I hope you’ve come to terms with Faith’s “under-utilization”. Most complaints against this show, given time, get worked out. Of all the second-tier characters in the Buffyverse, Faith has the greatest arc, by far. And the slow buildup throughout both series was essential to that arc. In fact, Faith’s arc was even better than some of the main characters. If you have faith in the writing in this show (excuse the pun), it always pays off. Even if it doesn’t directly, something good comes of it. You’re one of the few reactors I’ve seen who’ve pointed out how well Eliza played Buffy. I’ve seen it said that SMG plays Faith wonderfully (which is obviously true), but in some ways Eliza’s task was harder because it required more subtlety. Good observations. On Faith and Buffy’s chemistry, it all goes one way, Faith toward Buffy, and I’m not sure it was meant to be (from what I read it wasn’t) but the way Eliza played it, it certainly was there. Even the writers saw it, in retrospect. That’s just the way good fiction writing works. Some things come out of it that weren’t planned. And, by now, of course, you know the Tara-Willow arc. Great stuff. In just a very few episodes that will be settled, or its beginning will be. I don’t understand you thinking that Willow should have recognized that that *wasn’t Buffy*. I don’t see that that makes much sense. Tara recognized it through some supernatural understanding that Willow was not privy to. It’s not like they’ve had a lot of body-swapping incidents, as reference. Maybe Willow should have recognized that Buffy “wasn’t being quite herself” and asked her what was wrong, but that is explained by the fact that they’ve drifted apart this season. And that’s worlds apart from knowing that Buffy wasn’t Buffy. Nonetheless, a really good – exciting – reaction.

So, Dakara is annoyed and upset by the fact that Willow didn't notice anything wrong in Buffy, understandable, but let's have a little bit of fun trying to understand why it happened. Clearly they had two big goals in this episode: give an entrance for Tara in the scoobies in a big way and showing off the talent of their cast, something, I'm sure, both Sarah Michelle Gellar and Eliza Dushku really enjoyed too. Now, to achieve both of these goals in the space of a single episode, the only way was to make all the characters playing dumb in the face of the clearly unnatural Buffy's behaviour. This, clearly, can be annoying for the viewer, as it always is when well established characters behave out of character for no specific reason. While seeing a well established character like Willow acting blind in this way can be annoying, what I personally find upsetting is what happens in the case of the less established characters, like Riley. He's relativity new, we, as viewers, are still trying to know him and we can't foreseen how he is supposed to react in different situations. So, in this case, is he unable to notice anything weird in Buffy because he's acting dumb like the others or is he unable to look beyond her physical appearance? Or maybe he doesn't know Buffy as well as he would like yet, so he actually thinks that this new behaviour is another aspect of her personality. I can't say, I really don't know. Furthermore, if he's just playing dumb for this episode, how he would act in similar circumstances but in a different episode? Again, I have no idea. With the writers' decision to tweak our main characters so to reach their goals we have wasted a great opportunity to learn more about Riley as a character. And this is upsetting to me. Could they have avoided this issue? Honestly, I don't think so, at least not without dedicating more time to this story, another one or two episodes. Sadly the time was not on their favour here. There are just six more episodes left in the season, counting also the finale, and still a lot of topics to cover. About Faith, I agree with Dakara that they seem to go around it and never trying to arrive to a solution. The reason, I think, is that the writers found themselves kinda stuck. They clearly understood that they had a great character in Faith, loved by the audience and Eliza Dushku in the role is simply amazing, so it's easy to understand that they didn't want to drop her after season 3 but, at the same time, they didn't want her in the series either. If they bring her back for good, inevitably, Buffy and Faith will be end up to become closer and closer, story wise, they are the only two slayer in existence, they share the same destiny, powers, battles and even dreams, literately, and this will end up to sideline the other characters, like what happened in “bad girls” in season 3, breaking the group established dynamics and so damaging the show. If instead they try to put Faith aside after bringing her back, giving her basically nothing to do, they will ruin the character, pissing off the viewers and so, again, damaging the show. So, what they are doing here is basically kicking the can down the road, keeping Faith “in the loop” and Eliza interested in the character while avoiding any commitment. They bring her back for a couple of episodes now and then, here and there, before parking her somewhere like they did when they put her in a coma, hoping that, at a certain point, they will find a way to bring her back for good without screwing up everything. Tara and Willow. Really Dak ?! I didn't say anything before because I was curious to see how you would have interpreted their relationship thought the details and the little hints sprinkled in the previous episodes, but are you still unsure after this one? If the “you are mine, I'm yours” wasn't enough, later on Faith/Buffy made it blatantly clear with a couple of direct double entendres: “Willow's not driving stick any more” and “you give her whatever she needs”. What else do you want, the release of a sex tape? Clearly, as you correctly pointed out, given the time period they were quite constrained about what to show or not to show, but, for what regarded the story, they felt quite free to go in any direction, if they were smart with the writing. Anyway, honestly, all Willow's “sex scenes” have been always quite “soft”, I don't know if by accident or design, compared to Buffy's “sex scenes” that were more explicit … remaining always PG of course. A last thing I noticed, and maybe here is just me reading to much between the lines so take it for what it is, there are communication problems between Buffy and Riley, while Tara and Willow seem to be written as contrast medium to help spotting a light on such problems, and, because clearly communication is a big topic in this season, I though it could be. In “Hush” Riley failed to understand Buffy's hint to break the box, while, even if they barely know each other, Tara and Willow immediately managed to work in sync. Buffy is still reluctant to tell everything about her past to Riley, maybe because she doesn't think he can understand or maybe because she is not ready to share, I don't know. In contrast, Willow told everything to Tara about her, Oz, the slayer, Buffy and the scoobies. Riley said “I love you” to Buffy for the first time, sadly he told it at the wrong person and, at the end of the episode, he still hasn't said it to Buffy. In this same episode Tara understood what Willow meant with “I just like having something that's just mine” and answered her without hesitation “I'm yours”. So, could it be a thing? Maybe, maybe not, don't know.

What a great two-parter. Both SMG and ED absolutely nailed their portrayals. Freaky Friday episodes are great if done well. Yes. I also got a strong vibe from Willow & Tara. As she said, I too really like that she has this relationship outside of the Scoobies. I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out over the rest of the season. :)

It's like Tara is exactly who the group needed to solve this crisis. She slots in exactly when she's the most incredibly useful. Like consulting an expert when you have a pest control issue.

Ed Green

I love this episode because it shows the bits and pieces, in Faith's psyche, that we never were shown. Her self hatred and actually seeing that she still does have a conscious, despite how much she wants to push it down. Also, I actually loved how no one but Tara noticed. It breaks the cliche and brings Tara into the group as not only friend, but a witchcraft user.

Douglas

It is. One of the best sketchily-drawn but deep characterisations on TV. It's like those Japanese ink drawings of, say, a cloudy mountain where the clouds appear through an absence of ink.

denmaroca 2

I could tell you were thinking about Good Place when you were talking about Faith needing to change as a person

Bisibia

Faith managed to rape two people at the same time. Neither Buffy nor Reilly were able to give informed consent. "The spell" was the most erotic scene of the season. Notice that it takes place inside a big "O".

Thom Purdy

In my head when I think about the Faith/Spike scene (and many other scenes from this episode), it's always Eliza saying it to Spike in my mind. SMG does such a good job of acting as Faith that my mind can't process it properly, so it's always Eliza as Faith in my mind not SMG as Faith. I love this episode so much, one of my favourites in the whole show. The acting and writing is just so good

Graham Nickless

Glad you enjoyed these last two episodes, they are definitely a big highlight of this season. I know you like to rock out during the intro (and why not?), but the next episode is one you should probably pay attention to!

PaulC

One of my favourite episodes for sure great acting all round and the look on faiths face at the end painted a million pictures just fantastic 🙌 the interaction with spike was brilliant 😃 loved seeing the joy on your face dak throughout this reaction it's always wonderful to see you happy , cheers for another belting reaction and great drumming btw 🙂

I love this episode. One of the best "freaky friday" examples I've seen in media. And both SMG and Eliza played each other so well! The thing I really loved about it though is you can really see the impact it has on Faith to walk a mile in Buffy's shoes, as the saying goes. You can see how much pain she's been in for so long, and for the first time she sees another path. I do agree that I would have liked this arc to go on a little longer, though I think one more episode would have done it. But regardless, I'm glad we got this much. On the topic of Willow & Tara - they absolutely do have wonderful chemistry together. And yes, that scene definitely had a sexual subtext, but keep in mind it was 1999 and somethings couldn't be said or shown directly on TV, unfortunately. Still, their relationship was pretty groundbreaking at the time, and helped in some small way to normalize LGBT relationships on television, even if they were limited in what they could show. Glad you're feeling better!

Neil Silverman

"was the really sexual or was it just me?" not just you and yes, very sexual metaphorical scene with willow and tara...also love those little scenes where faith is fighting herself. She's a terrible person, but she still has the morality squirming inside her...and the end where she's punching "buffy" but its her body, and she's calling herself a disgusting murderer :(

With Willow and Tara I don't think it's necessarily the time period, that puts a hunking great big question mark over things, so much as the country the show was filmed in. A lot of people probably don't know that a little old country like Australia was actually pretty revolutionary in it's number of 'firsts' for LGBT characters on Television - first gay male character who was a series regular (and written as an actual character, who was allowed to have a boyfriend on screen), first trans character actually played by a transgender actress, one of the first out lesbian characters, first same sex female kiss, one of the first bisexual characters on television, and all of this between 1972 and 1975 (yes 50 odd years ago). So it's not like there isn't a precedent for LGBTQIA+ characters on television in other countries going back a ways, but then this is the US we're talking about. I remember the outrage when Ellen Degeneres' character in the show 'Ellen' came out & there was the first same sex kiss on US TV in 1994, do we really think that just 5 years later in 1999 that a US network hosting what most thought of as a 'teenagers' show would even allow them to do anything more than hint at a potential relationship. No clear answer either way, just thoughts.

SMG's performance in particular is even more impressive when you consider she's playing Faith playing Buffy. In the credits as well SMG is credited as Faith and Eliza Dushku is credited as Buffy.

Claire Eyles

I really love the progression Faith goes through in this episode - you can see it through the way she delivers the line "Because it's wrong". At the beginning of the episode, she is gleefully doing her best Buffy impersonation, portraying how she thinks Buffy comes across in her self-righteous act in the mirror. She decides to have some fun tossing hand grenades into Buffy's relationships and teasing Spike with the next "because it's wrong" (and dang it was hot). But living in Buffy's skin for a while, seeing how it feels to be loved and appreciated, and thinking the real Buffy was stuck in the Council's custody and possibly about to be murdered, by the end her speech to the hostage-taking vampires included a much more sincere "because it's wrong". I also love the way Buffy in Faith's body echoes that iconic visual from the Season 3 episode Consequences, staking the vampire from behind and *poof*, there she stands, having rescued Faith in Buffy's body. Great performances and an amazing 2-part episode that I never get tired of rewatching!

Denni Caid

The switcheroo performances of Sarah Michelle Gellar and Eliza Dushku really are very impressive. 👩🏼↔️👩🏻

Koz

Such a good write up! I really love how deep Faiths character is even though they don't actually spend much time going into it. Her story is pretty much entirely told in off handed comments, expressions, behavior and line delivery but it's just as clear as it would be if she had gotten flashback episodes. It's just beautifully done.

Julian Welton

Great episode. How long did you have to wait to see it? I had to wait just over a week as it took unusually long to illegally download it after the US broadcast. Very frustrating! 🙂 Great reaction, as usual. Though I'm not sure if you picked up on the extent of Faith's self-loathing. At the end of the final fight, Faith was talking to herself while pummeling Buffy in her body - and was harder on herself than Buffy ever was. (Notice we got this confession in a church.) Faith started changing because of the difference in the way she was treated in Buffy's body. People cared about her; they thanked her; Riley made love to her, not just had sex with her (you're right, Eliza plays Faith as being sexual with Buffy because that's the only way she knows how to relate to people; other than beating them up). Having had a taste of what it was like to be loved and respected, how must Faith be feeling right now? Notice how stunned Buffy was when she felt the heartache in her body (Joyce was right) when she recovered it. Once again the metaphor of spell=sex gets an airing. Tara seems a more knowledgeable witch than Willow, though not necessarily more powerful. Which is why she was able to pick up that it was Faith in Buffy. We can forgive Willow for not noticing; we found it easy to tell because we already knew! Interesting Faith was the first person to pick up on Willow/Tara. Seems like Joyce was somewhat impressed with Giles' prowess during their candy-induced tryst (though how she was able to compare him to a stevedore is another speculation!). Faith was less impressed with Xander (7 minutes, apparently). Couple of echoes: Buffy staking the vampire from behind reprises Faith doing the same to Mr Trick in Consequences; and Faith saying Buffy got "poetic justice" reflects Buffy saying the same to Faith when attempting to drain her blood in Graduation Day, Pt. Long post - but there was a lot in this episode!

Faith is such a fantastic character and Sarah played her so well this episode. Love the it's wrong coming full circle moment.

Christopher simeon

Possibly the best line in the show, that: "Yours."
