2025-02-26 19:22:44 +0000 UTCThey are, but I also actually think it is a correct sort of meta-analysis that was floated on the show (if I remember correctly), in that "the media" is unwilling to declaratively call it for what it is (with that complexity; lol, trolling you, is it a nazi salute or not, lolol), which feeds back into the loop of making it ok to restate impulses of facism under the guise of ambiguity. The impulse is often, when you "look for nazis", to hold up a picture from a history book, and if it doesn't 100% match, then it's a "well, who can really know anything, actually?" situation. "They" know that this dynamic exists, and rely on institutions (media or otherwise) to err on the side of ambiguity, in lieu of being declarative. Which, to an extent, they fundamentally cannot do. (that's the role of specialized press, like left-leaning news organizations, for example). "They can do this stuff" because they are operating from a largely correct analysis of certain dynamics at play, and whose particular weaknesses are being exploited. Some of those weaknesses include "...how come the mainstream media just can't say what I and literally everyone I've ever talked to about this, can clearly see, with my own eyes, in my own skull?". It's basically chomsky-shit, to be really to-the-point about it. "did he really do a nazi salute or not?" is a "who can say" type of thing, at the end of the day. "Do I think this guy has good intentions, in general?" on the other hand, is a lot easier to say with your full throat. One question is about someone's intentions. The other is about whether or not the precise aesthetics match other precise aesthetics, that then tell you something about someone's intentions. Often after the fact, like with the nazis. We know they suck after taking in the full scope of what they did, after they did it. Up until they did all of what they did, they signaled pretty clearly what their ill intentions were, and the precise semantics about what each little thing "was", was probably as discussed back then, as it is now, when the situation is unfolding, and there being various levels of willingness to indulge ambiguity.
