Premium 346: Give Them The Religion

Catching up on all the latest news of this week: Trump and the gang go to Europe, the Dems (still) struggle to find their footing, AIPAC comes for Jon Ossoff, and Kentucky gets hit with a new flood. Plus a grim article about how the profit motive has left us literally unable to put out fires

The kibbutz would’ve always turned into Israel, being based as it was on stealing the land of a native population

There's so much lore to learn. Makes you tired in the head sometimes. Now I gotta read about what Mizrahi are all about. ...Like, their saving throws, starter-spell, etc. If their racial is gimmicky or actually pretty decent.

Jesper Ohlsson

Dems lost young people - who are disproportionately aware of the genocide in Gaza due to getting their information from social media instead of “news” corporations - who felt completely unmotivated to vote for a party that offers *zero* material change to their lives while sending billions to Israel (my 12-year old nephew makes jokes about this).

Heather

Keep talking about settler colonialism and how it’s the root of everything this raggedy ass country experiences please

Heather

...there's something darkly depressing about this David Hog guy having gone through what he did, and coming out the other side of it with a vision "of what to do" no more daring than literally any other democratic smart boy and girl. The committes we're going to have will be on point. The suggestions we will draft? - Fire. Ya'll can't even handle it. *browses folder named BlackLadyReactionGifs for something suitable*.

Worst case scenario, a nuclear winter event solves global warming and the narrator of the film turns out to be some burrowing species in the distant future. Perhaps a cephalopod or some type of mole person that sounds like Morgan Freeman.

Follow up on the tenants’ chat idea. We have had a tenants’ WhatsApp group since the pandemic. This week we just got the landlord equivalent of an ankle monitor… our landlord had to install heat monitors the city provides bc they got caught too many times trying to pretend the heat was broken 🤣. Now the city will make them report out readings from these if we call in a violation and they will get hit for every day of illegally low heat. It takes time to fuck your landlords but god willing we will all get there together 🌈

I can already tell that this Pete Hegseth guy is going to be a problem. ...In the sense that you see a character in a tv-show for the first time, and it's sorta intimated that they're going to be part of the main cast, but you're already in the upper limits of your patience with them, even though it's just been literally a few minutes that have passed. And there's like, at least a few seasons more already in the can. He's like Hunter Biden if he didn't feel sorry for himself, and just earnestly thought "he was on top of things; no problem".

On the whole “economy was actually good” shitshow, I think it’s worth pointing out that even Bernie Dem shitheads like Ryan Cooper at TAP are still arguing as recently as three days ago that it was a good economy. It’s time for some genuine Cracker Control™️ on these piss-ants. https://bsky.app/profile/ryanlcooper.com/post/3lhyofx7kpu2l

Yeah its going to be a nationwide problem. Idk if they're just planning on leaning on the prison crews more, but I can tell you if we have 4 concurrent lightning strikes on my district we're fucked.

A guy I went out on a date with on last week works for the forest service and said the same thing. We have crazy fires here in Santa Fe and getting rid of firefighters is a crazy thing to do.

Right wing ideology is not ascendant, it's just that liberalism expended the last of its energy in the West to destroy any remnants of the left, and has no ideology and nothing to offer but similarly nothing exists to take it's place, minoritatrian right wing rule becomes default in areas where they at least still have some cohesion and energy in their voting base.

hey I think it was last episode that somebody mentioned him but I just wanted to say yall could probably get Doug Rushkoff on the show, he has a podcast and went on Trueanon. I'm sure he'd be an interesting guest

I love sitting in my little nook next to my kitchen, a cup of tea in front of me, drawing a deep sigh, and saying "well...I 'm just glad that The Economy is going well again." "Like, it's going really well. I can even hear it from where I'm sitting. It's going chunka-chunka, but sometimes it's maybe more like a soft wooo-woo." "Not like a train woo-woo, but maybe more like how I remember that a pigeon sounded, that I thought - foolishly - was an owl, that one morning. I always wanted to have an owl near my home, because they are so peculiar, and oddly beautiful. But pigeons aren't bad either, I guess. " "Anyway. I'm just glad that the economy is, finally, doing well again. We have waited and wished for so long, for The Economy, to bounce back. And here it is."

Hey USDA Forest Service employee checking in- the fire situation is about to get a shit load worse. Over the weekend DOGE fired 30 people from the National Forest I work on. They claimed that they weren't touching the fire staff, but the thing is that nearly everyone in the Forest Service fights fire as secondary duties. Every single person that we let go was a firefighter during peak fire season. This is in addition to budget cuts not allowing us to hire seasonal employees this summer. For my forest, that means we are at roughly half the total capacity for fire fighters compared to last year. And this is just 1 of 154 National Forests.

America still being on the saw of "oooh Russia, oooh, ooooooh" feels like second-generation of family-trauma where you just listlessly recreate a conflict that your dumb parent or grand-parent had, and that's now your actual life, and what you put energy into doing. It was idiotic back then - when communism was "like a thing" - in Russia, but it's less than nothing now, to still even talk about these things, and even less to actually be animated about. Russia is just a country a very long way from the US. No part of it even resembles the structure of what you initially were angry about (that you don't remember, because you weren't alive to be animated about it). The US might as well be in feud with Nigera, with the same level of intensity, as political coherence goes. It's very akin to the same, sorta-arbitrary focus on Israel. Like, why do you care? Why this country, and not any other? There is an overwhelming feeling of "I dunno, throw a dart, and yeah, that one. This is the channel in which we will funnel all our energy. There's no bigger ambition at play here; no dream, no actual "thing". ...I guess, what I miss - if it ever was - is the sense of "we can actually do a project. And we can do it pretty easily, if we don't - I dunno - day-drink all day, and maybe trust that people around you aren't just biding their time to put a dagger in your throat, because you imagine that that's what they want to do, just cuz?". ...there is just something profoundly pathetic about the current state of the US being animated "about Russia". Like it's both the 80's, and 2025, at the same time, in a mish-mash-clump of nonsense. ...it's very rich for me to say, but there is this feeling of "for fucks sake; grow up already".

Jesper Ohlsson

I’d recognize those TR-09 drums anywhere.

It blows my mind how much Israel worked to kill Yiddish as a language. I lived in Queens NY and all the Hebrew letters on business signs etc. are actually spelling out Yiddish. In Israel, not so much even though the ethnic ancestry is similar.

Can't wait for a future where there's a shadow-governmental-we-do-whatevs group that's just a straight up slur, and then the subsequent struggle-session in media about "well, I mean, it is called that, but like, can we say that? Can we have it in our graphics? " "Like, it's factual, but it's also, you know, really offensive. Like, there's a good 3 pages in this HR-manual about how stuff like this isn't cool at all under any circumstances, even as a quote-un-quote joke. But it's like, it's news, so we also have to? I feel? I dunno. This is really hard"

Jesper Ohlsson

I think it's probably very much baked into the experience as a human, that you can only truly understand "what something is" in retrospect, after the dust has settled. This is true for people on an individual basis, but also historical shifts. I think part of this dynamic, is why there is this walking-on-eggshells-feeling of describing things in motion, as they happen. It can't be that fascism is winning out, not just in america, but particularly "in-focus" in america, because it is a country of bombast and cartoonish spectacle. It can't be that things are what they are; be it a realization that you're in a bad personal relationship, or that you have a drinking-problem or, indeed, that things are working out "very poorly" politically (in a time when we should, given externalities like climate change, "do a lot better"). I think most people have a fundamental sense of "...yeah, but it will be alright, though. Like, in a movie. There's like the beginning, and then there's a conflict, and ooh, that's scary. But, you know, it will work out. And even if it's a really sad movie - like one of those from Sweden or whatever - there's still like, yeah, that was sad, but you know, I really learnt something. Like, I mean, not really; I mostly felt a little bummed out. But, like, it was probably good for me to see that movie, like, for my general, personal development, and stuff." ..I don't think there's any actual reason not to assume that this general dynamic wouldn't also be present, as people decide on things like policy and "what to do, in the general sense". It will work out. I've seen movies. Yeah, things are stupid at times, but like, obviously it's going to be some kind of fine. Right? It just kinda takes you off-guard at times that it might not.

Jesper Ohlsson

Btw people will use your building-wide chats if it is a place to mention what packages are in the lobby and to offer to hold them for each other. But having a chat where you all talk can become something that builds solidarity against the landlord and wins for the tenants

BookMisser

Just get our legs back underneath us as a first step. I’m also organizing building-wide text groups so that we can respond to landlords and maybe if needed warn people about ice

BookMisser

I think part of what we should do now is anything to stop feeling frozen. I’m not a federal worker (although I’m next on the block). But I’m going to the save our services protests Wednesday https://www.nelp.org/take-action/action-center/31156/

BookMisser

It is true, that fascism is fundamentally stupid (it's ultimately a sign of profound immaturity, turned into something dangerous when concentrated in large groups of like-minded ilk). That, however, will not prepare you for the precise shapes that it actually takes. Hitting rewind on the tape, and going back a few years, I don't think anyone who gets paid to have an opinion would ever credibly be able to argue that it would look and feel like "ok, you know the hampster-dance? Like on Altavista, or whatever, when you were in school? Yeah, so it's like a guy who still thinks that whole thing is pretty cool." "But now he is in a position where he gets to decide things. And there's like, an overhwelming, general feeling of acquiescence that you would think would never be in place, given the pure, distilled lameness of it all? Like, there is this feeling that it can't be both this stupid, and also profoundly lame, while it is happening?". "Because if that is true, why was I supposed to work on myself, and do better, and be thoughtful of others? If you can be this catastrophically lame, boring, uninteresting and unsexy in every way that that word can be used. As you get to govern?" ...the animating question about someone like Elon Musk is "..why haven't you died from embarassment yet?". There's a lesson about something in that. But it sure is taxing to be forced to witness. It is - if nothing else - a sad confirmation that you cannot - in fact - hate someone to death with your mind, spirit and full body. We sadly do not live in the beautiful world of effective hexes and ill-wishing-upon. We live in this one.

Couple thoughts on DOGE: Tom is right when he said it seems like if it’s this simple to come in and do all this shit, seems like Biden admin could’ve been doing this all along. This goes to a broader pet peeve of mine that Dems need to play dirty like Repubs do, period. No more decorum or aisle crossing or protecting mid-terms blah blah blah. Dems need to STFU and play the same game. At least we could gain some ground that Repubs would have to claw back when they return to power next. At this point, Dems only hold the line allowing Republicans to pick up where they left off. I’ve given up on deciding if it’s intentional or just stupidity. Regarding the legality, True Anon did an episode on DOGE (they choose to style it as “doggy”, which is much less humiliating to speak, lol) and Liz laid out the legal framework it appears they’re using as justification for Musk and co’s shenanigans, namely that they’ve revamp a program (I don’t think it’s a department, maybe a task force, advisory, cleaning crew?) created under Obama that intended to modernize government processes in terms of digitizing etc. I’m butchering her explanation, hopefully it’s a free episode and people can listen themselves. But the point is, if it’s unconstitutional I don’t know that the genesis lies with the Trump admin per se, if that makes sense, and seeing as the courts have been built up to serve the right for the last few decades, I don’t know that anyone could make a case that it’s unprecedented. Which is depressing. I’m not justifying it at all, but I do think it’s important when arguing against to simply say it’s criminal or unconstitutional - there’s a precedence that may have had good intentions, but perhaps should have been run through the filter of “but what if this ends up in the wrong hands” sort of thing.

I really enjoyed the first bit but i did want say that (according to what ive read) the two jewish people who were shot were Mizrahi —not of European heritage. This fact makes the situation all the more telling because it makes perfectly clear that this is a white supremacist project and that the zionist rhetoric about keeping jews safe is bullshit. Mizrahi jews can come from a variety countries, each group with a different history BUT, the category Mizrahi basically comes from Israel stealing human beings to perform labor.

I worked the elections for the AP and the voter turnout for the presidential race coming out of Wayne County, Michigan, where Dearborn and Detroit are, were historically so low that I kept getting alerts when I was inputting the vote. More people cast votes for their Michigan Supreme Court justices than the presidential race.

I think Gaza and Ukraine have one thing in common: lots of American money and weapons killing people and the American people are tired of subsidizing war while barely being able to afford insulin or eggs.

Emily Richardson

Aaron asked what’s going on? Fascism can also be described as corporatism and we’re in it boys

gavin curran

I think we’re living through a bigger epoch of history than we can see (because we’re in the middle of it). I think instead of america vs ussr or west vs east, we’re still in the battle of capitalism vs communism (or rather, anything not capitalism). I think this is another hinge point of this larger moment: trump and Elon dismantling and privatizing in one fell swoop instead of incrementally doing it. I wonder what this chapter in the future history book will look like — assuming people can read in the future, or even want to or have the luxury to.

Emily Richardson

Wildly overestimate the war on Gaza’s role in the demonrats losing. Terrance is a dog with a bone with that. It’s not Gaza. It’s not Ukraine.

And then on top of that unemployment think about even the fully employed people struggling with various forms of debt and you have another group of people who could nominally be doing well in terms of wages but really be barely getting by and no I'm totally not talking about myself here haha

As a jew who decided wrapping my head around nationalism was not worth my time in 2nd grade on 9/11, religion has nothing to do with it. Are you pro-state or anti-state. I'm sure I'm going to piss of some Marxists or whatever, the kibbutz was started with Peter Kropotkin and it kinda just shows that the evolution of the state and consolidation of power is genocidal no matter what

Boom free premium car parts for Pennies on the dollar

I think some billionaires will always keep the Dems going because they have been an excellent foil to any genuine reform energy. I don’t see a natural collapse of the Dems I think they will zombie along until they are put down by a reform movement.

I mean honestly, what are we going to do? Because it really does feel like that the levy is about to break. Maybe it's broken and I'm still in shock lol. We need to organize offline and I'm not sure what that looks like when a lot of people aren't willing to sacrifice the comforts this country has promised them. The revolution will not come from the liberal class obviously, but how can we organize when the most basic public goods are not only unavailable but are being taken AWAY. Idk I have no answers and I'm ranting at this point. Good work fellas

Tom, I've been saying since 11/6 that the only way for Democrats to retain any sense of honor is to start detonating vests - that they have a moral imperative to do so even. Glad to hear we're of the same mind

Thinking along comparative historical lines, there’s a lot of similarities between now and the 20s/30s. I’m sure there were people then, saying, “it’s obviously it’s capitalism”. Not saying that what you’re saying is wrong, just that this happens over and over again, in different ways. We’re due for a big re-negotiation and I think the power rests on the side of the people (not the right wing extremists). That said, the people, again, won’t be disciplined and organized to NOT take another new deal

Okay, I had this thought earlier and maybe it helps clarify what’s been going on and why; US foreign policy has long been centered on control of the world island (Eurasian landmass, also Africa, technically) because it’s been theorized whoever controls that controls the world. Also, if another country were to arise and control that, it would challenge US hegemony. The US has controlled the world island by having a ring of allies surrounding it; NATO in the west, Japan and South Korea in the east, the Philippines and Australia in the south east, Saudi Arabia and ISREAL in the south west of Asia. This is why the Soviet Union was such a threat. Also why the nordstream pipeline was blown up, to prevent further integration between Europe and Asia. China is a threat because they have been trying to connect the landmass with high speed rail and more through the belt and road project. Ukraine shouldn’t have gone hot, which is funny how both Biden and Trump are destroying this attempt to further encircle Russia and China, but I digress. There might’ve been more but I can’t think of it right now

William
