Tom, you and I are the same. I too suffered from panic attacks. I believed I had breast cancer at 8 years old (fyi the person writing this is a dude). I was told by a "Christian psychologist" that I was either, in his words, "schizophrenic or demonically oppressed" turns out I was neither. I was just idk...a traumatized child who grew up in a abusive household that used Christianity as medication. Look up the 7 steps to spiritual freedom. That was this psychologist recommendation for treatment. I wouldn't suggest it to anyone but you could try it if you're still concerned.

I know Eggers have always wanted to make/remake Nosferatu, so it's a passion project of his. I think his charm comes from making original stories in a very aesthetically and environmentally (especially in terms of morality) restricted space.
I think I feel about it the way I feel about representational art on youtube, like when someone spends a month carving a nude woman in a waterfall out of a solid tree trunk. Yeah, it's technically impressive, and I don't have any real problem with it, but it's very "..ok".
//The RedLetterMedia review went over a bunch of audience feedback that whined about how it was basically a straight up porno, and it's very annoying to me that a whole new generation is growing up with sexual politics in movies that are identical to reactionaries like Focus on the Family, with the only real difference being that they're not homophobic.
I don't know what to say to anyone who earnestly complains that the nudity in, let's say, Oppenheimer made them "very uncomfortable". Like, fucking grow up? Do you have a panic attack everytime you go pee and catch a glimpse of your own genitals?
This world will not tolerate you being this fragile and histrionic about these basic things. It will crush you.

The audience is all of those "monster fucker permit" carriers who were disappointed watching The Shape of Water (2017) after it was being hyped that we were going to see a caked-up fish man getting it on. I can only imagine Eggers was one of them.

This isn't to disparage Tarence's usual output (and I know this isn't the episode it pertains to, it was in the free ep previous to this one) but for some reason he felt so much more compelling when it sounded like he was dying to consumption. Something in my subconscious was exponentially stirred as if I was really hearing the last few weak words of a dying man and it really enriched his delivery. Good stuff consider giving Tarence tuberculosis next time 👍

//EDIT: I give the movie a solid B. Technically well executed, but also a bit like walking in on someone's hobby project and not really relating to the weight it has to its creator. Great episode. I’m talking to this podcast way too much on my bike ride to work. I’m not against new technology I’m against widely adopting technologies before we understand the broad implications of their adoption. How do they interact with our biochemistry, our feelings, the ecosystem, other technologies. Those things can take decades or centuries to understand. And we discount technologies that are thousands of years old as simple without considering how they made be refined.

It's not a bad idea to start habitually brushing up on which legitimate sites can still deliver medication to you for self-medicational purposes (and which sites are still trustworthy; these things can change from year to year).
It's also not a bad idea to start building an online community network with other parents of trans-kids, which - on top of emotional support - would also help with things like securing (or helping others secure) necessary medication if/when they become more restricted.
I'm sure you've already done something like this, but its worth mentioning these "planning for the future" things now, in a semi-public space.
I don't see practical issues like securing medication becoming easier in the forseeable future, but it's still far from impossible. So, it's a good time, now, to establish a network "just in case". Best case scenario, things stay somewhat fine, and you just end up with some new friends.
For all its faults, small Reddit-communities (by subject or highly specific, geographical location) could be a great starting point for something like this.
Take care.

My first feeling of unease in the US was when the CDC briefly told the public that masks were ineffective in a bid to save masks for health workers. Obviously health workers were being coughed on in close quarters by very sick people and we needed to save as many masks as we could for them. But the ramifications of lying briefly to try to do that were huge.
I also think it is important to understand that even experts were debating the implications of vaccine trials. It was certainly clear that they reduced serious illness (huge) and that they did not provide sterilizing immunity. But more ambiguous was how to interpret post vaccination antibody levels and the T-cell response. How frequently vaccination would be justified and what schedule should be used is also something that experts debate. You should assume that for a new virus the recommended vaccination schedule would be adjusted as new information comes in (starting with one of several possible approaches suggested by the research). The virus is also adapting to us and to our medical interventions and our behavior changes. So the actual disease may be spreading easier but killing less often and reducing vaccine efficacy (as an example).
Phrases like “believe science” are so damaging because science is a labor. It is not a static canon of facts. Scientists labor to collect and interpret, review, disseminate, reproduce evidence in a dynamic world. The world should push back and offer skepticism towards science and scientists should be able to defend their assertions.
But scientists and all of us have to take risks and fight for the collective good sometimes. When the times come to do something that involves personal risk based on conclusions drawn at public research institutions those institutions should treat us with respect and give us their unvarnished conclusions and ask us to take those risks with as much knowledge and consent as possible. It is so important that science and medicine earn that trust year round.

Australian statistician here to talk about vaccine efficacy and media discourse. There was a lot of miscommunication, but also I think that the US had a particularly pathological mix of ideology and media decisions which lead to the polarisation of the vaccine discussion into "it's poison" and "it's a miracle cure". There was much less of that here in Australia, though the idea that we'd all get vaccinated (and we did! >90% got two shots here in the first year if I remember right) and then return to normalcy still happened.
Among science and health people the role of the vaccine was understood as not a panacea, but a way to reduce death and serious disease. Efficacy in this context isn't just about fewer infections, it's also about less severe symptoms for people who are infected and I think that aspect was just absent from much of the discourse.
I think a big part of it is an unwillingness in media to talk about statistics with nuance. Anything with nuance but specifically statistics because that's hard and it's not going to win you viewers. There's been a lot of soul-searching in public health fields about that failure of communication in the following years. A good chunk of it is the media environment, a bunch was the government in the US fucking up, but there's also self-blame from public health researchers for not being more in the public eye from before the pandemic even began. Most public health people work with government or the medical field rather than with the public, which means that there wasn't The Talking Face for public health when one was needed independent of Trump's government.
For the curious let's talk some numbers for that statistical nuance. The WHO initially said that a vaccine which offered 50% protection against infection would be good enough, I believe most of the early ones were 70% or higher for infection, 80% or above for severe/lethal disease. Those are relative figures though, so if 10% of your population would get COVID, and 10% of your infected population would have severe or lethal COVID, you reduce those figures by the relevant percentages: 10%×(100-70)% gives you 3% of your total population bring infected. Of the infected population, 10%×(100-80)% = 2% have severe/lethal disease. That puts the percentage of the overall population who experience severe/lethal disease at 3%×2% = 0.06% down from 1% (the maths makes more sense as decimals I promise). That reduction to 0.06% looks much less impressive, but is probably a couple of hundred thousand lives in the immediate term.
The rollout of vaccinations was fucked up, made deeply and intentionally unequal by people looking to profit from it, and deliberately undermined for political gain. However, the existence of multiple viable vaccines for a novel virus within 6 months of the pandemic being declared is a remarkable achievement never seen before in human history. We can't readily calculate how many lives were directly or indirectly saved by it, but I'd hazard a guess at millions. There's new evidence coming out that vaccination also reduced the risk of long COVID, so the disabling effects were also lessened. We can't lose track of the achievement, we just have to ensure that next time we have a more equitable way of dealing with the rollout. I'm sure that'll be so easy...

Everything feels so low energy that even the scandals are just re-treads.
The "did Elon do a nazi salute" is basically the "Did Laura Ingram do a nazi salute?", and then there's all this tedious discourse about it, where nobody can know for sure if these people are bad until they do a literal nazi salute.
Till then, they are saved on a technicality. I don't even have to have access to CNN to know that they're already on the phone with someone who doubled in body-language and german history, and their assessment will be inconclusive, but "no doubt worrying".
The whole country feels hungover. We didn't even get a third (fourth?) assassination attempt!

According to an apocryphal legend, the fascist gesture was based on a customary greeting which was allegedly used in ancient Rome. 1 However, no Roman text describes such a gesture, and the Roman works of art that display salutational gestures bear little resemblance to the modern so-called "Roman" salute.
The gesture was based on a painting from 1798

I had to tell them that they are essentially a room full of idiots trying to fumble around in the dark around a room they've never been inside of. I'm not saying they can't or won't do anything or that it won't affect anyone, but trying to calm a freaked out 15 year old who was 7 years old for the first trump inauguration it's just easier for me to go to *these people are idiots.* sigh.
