I should’ve framed the weirdo letter they wrote—personally addressing my newborn—to tell her that her services were redundant and her claim was denied. What kind of sicko could okay sending that letter out to a zero year old? It was resolved when I (working full time as a bioinformatician with serious post partum brain damage and two young babies) called UHC and all the relevant hospital departments to track down what was wrong. Fingers crossed they know the fear we experience playing Russian Roulette with medical debt. That shooter could have been hired but that smile… being hired wouldn’t preclude loving your job

The gist of it is that there are different ways of being masculine, and in a given time, place, and culture those ways exist in a hierarchy. At present in places like the US the most honoured form - the hegemonic masculinity - is deeply tied to being most unlike the feminine. You can add very grounded political economy to this too, going to college/uni is feminised because all the colleges are woke, but also men find the skilled trades in like construction a more welcoming environment because they're typically male doninated. For many women, the perceived road to financial stability is a degree and an office job because those high paying trades aren't as open to women. The industries dominated by women that require similar qualifications are things like childcare and aged care. The pay is much worse. Whether college translates to financial stability and not just a lifetime of debt is a separate issue.

However, in my experience (I taught fifth grade for several years).... It's really insane how many young preteen and teen boys are really influenced by that stuff. My nine year old students were quoting Andrew Tate DAILY. And these kids' attitudes are being shaped by these people. There's more to say but I'll leave it at that.
