Some more unpacking of the election results, as well as a look at the various analyses and autopsies of what went wrong
I replied with these points to 2Liter Bong’s comment but I thought they were relevant to other comments so I figured I’d leave a version of it here: Yes. women are dying. My sister is an OBGYN and she has some horrible stories. But what I’ve found in my research is that women have been dying from not receiving abortion healthcare even before the Dobbs decision (primarily from catholic or religious hospitals who denied them access and did not share or refer them to life saving information or transfer them to a secular hospital ) and many of the women who have died (at least in Texas) have died post-Dobbs at these religious hospitals — Religious hospitals that have existed and have denied abobo healthcare waaaay before the Dobbs decision. I’m in Texas, I don’t work in healthcare, and while I didn’t have hetero sex for 2 years after moving back to my homestate because of paranoia about abortion illegality, the fact that I have an IUD and have no plans to get preggers (and act accordingly in sex as much as I can), the Dobbs decision hasn’t really affected my life - materially - all that much. I also don’t have sex much, which is another thing that the U.S. is experiencing— people are having less sex. Obviously the Dobbs decision is depressing and demoralizing and despicable so it’s affected my individual life in an emotional/abstract way, but materially- not much. It HAS affected my sister (the OBGYN) greatly due to her having to figure out how to treat her patients (and her hospital trying to figure out how to manage the legal responsibilities of training doctors during residency. There are certain federal obligations for training doctors and one of those includes a mandatory abortion course with hands-on training with real patients). But also I need to mention how hollow it sounded when Harris tried to run on abortion… WHEN THE DEMS WERE LITERALLY ALREADY IN OFFICE. If they did nothing materially beneficial towards that cause with Biden, why tf would people trust them to do it with Harris- someone who literally pontificated vapidly about abortion while pregnant women were getting bombed. And videos of miscarried dead fetuses and children among the rubble all across people’s SM for the past year. The contradictions and hypocrisy is too much.

@ bookmisser that’s terrible, especially in food service. I didn’t say I didn’t have healthcare. I have excellent healthcare. I just don’t have sick days (paid or unpaid) to go to use that healthcare or stay home sick. We’re told to go to work if we have covid or get an attendance violation. My point was that Biden’s administration indeed fucked over my union regardless of what liberal media reported about us getting our demands, and that I’m thankful Aaron mentioned it. Solidarity my friend!

This round the ERA could have enshrined my equal rights as a woman under the constitution. It would require that congress become more democratic and do away with the 60 vote requirement for some bills in the senate. Which issue was more important to the democrats?

It shuttered every clinic and ended any provision of service in Texas (and on a statewide basis in several other states). It didn't change things in a lot of other places...those where it's already protected and those where it was effectively impossible because of existing and creeping restrictions/geography making it practically unavailable before Dobbs, e.g. all of Texas more than 50 miles west of I-35.

I agree with what you're aiming at. That's why I think Bessner's historical materialist analysis is so helpful. One of his main points vulgarly stated would be that "The call is coming from inside the house" in terms of the threat to what is essentially just procedural democracy at this point.
Fascism is a particular phenomenon of the mid 20th century that was defeated by liberalism. Real historical fascists admired the United States because we had done (via liberal bourgeois democracy) what they could only dream of. Hitler, for example, admired our so-called Indian policy and our settler-colonial model because it was such a tremendous success. It was a model for him not just in the Holocaust but especially in his desire to subjugate all Slavic people east of Germany.
Bessner's point is that we need to look soberly at that reality and realize whatever comes next is a product of liberal democracy and not a product of a invasive other that has corrupted our liberal democratic order. I think This can be seen very clearly in the intentionally hamstring efforts of radical reconstruction, but even more so after WW2 and the neoliberal turn.
Anywho, I'm not trying to police the use of the term. As bessner points out at times, Fascism can be a helpful term in conversation because people have a vague, albeit ahistorical, understanding of what it might mean (BPP use of the term for instance). I use it in conversation all the time.
However, like Terrence mentioned in this episode, I think it is vital that we identify our enemies and capitalist nodes of power properly. So amongst comrades I think his work is important to consider. Especially as genocide boosting liberals use the term to divorce themselves from the reality of being part of and profiting from the history of the imperial core.

It's the same thing with Trump in general. Trump is a shitty human being, sure, but he's been a political figure for a decade now. We had him as president for four of those years, and in that entire decade things have been gradually getting worse for everyone regardless of who is in charge. You can only press the "Trump is a threat to democracy" button so many times before people start tuning it out. Sure, the average voter's political IQ is low, but they're not ignorant to what's going on around them.

Regarding the escaped apes, I remember back in 2016 when I was a stupid Hilary supporter. I was complaining about the election results at work, and my boss who is a wealthy, Rockefeller-style Republican but otherwise a kind person said to me, "The Democrats had eight years to run the country. Now it's Trump's turn to see what he can do." I feel the same way. Humans have had several millennia to have dominion over the earth. I say we give the apes a chance to see what they can do.

Also if you think for even 2 seconds about that argument you realize something very important.
If you vote for the lesser of two evils every single election, you guarantee two things.
1) you’re getting evil either way, lesser or not
2) the next “lesser of two evils” will be more evil than the current one.
Eventually, you reach a point where you have the option of an open embrace of genocide, or an open embrace of genocide with a rainbow sticker slapped on the bombs

Daniel Bessner's work (American Prestige podcast) on the fascism debate just absolutely shreds the libs perpetually amorphous and totally ahistorical conception of the term. Of course I enjoy watching pseudo intellectuals get destroyed in real time, but I also enjoy his work because it accents issues raised by decolonial theorists about the true nature of liberal democracy and imperialism both aboard and during the colonization of North America.

Economic populism is economism, which is opportunism that leads to reformism and doesn't lead to revolution. New Deal was economism, which saved capitalism during a time when we should've moved towards socialism. Then began the fascist covert war against communism in the global south that led to Neoliberalism.
