It's shaping up to be the closet election in the history of elections folks

Comments

Yeah. I think I misunderstood the intent, now that I see the comments. Guess it triggered me from hearing all the liberals saying you’re racist and sexist and hate trans people if you don’t vote for Harris. Anyway, still doesn’t make sense to me. I also don’t ever look at all these stupid-ass articles or this news coverage about undecided voters that I’m seeing right now when I look it up. I obviously know nothing about the history of this phenomenon, and the hatred of these people. Just watched a Lewis Black segment calling all undecided voters morons. I hate elections so much.

Katherine Moss

You’re a hero! I could not find this book

Herby Blemphis

Trillbillies ecology podcast would be so sick

Chicken Man Cory

What if trees could fart too? Lol.. sorry, havent looked @ prev comments much. But trees are the new cows.

Chicken Man Cory

Trees are depressing the fuck outta me right now. Some of them look so beautiful! Some of them, well.. they're sheddin' shit.. and kinda haggard. But that's what the early ones do and they're used to it and know they're old and just let it go. Like fartin' in front of a pretty girl. Im not a pretty girl but maybe time is.. and brutal old bitch. Trees dont care. Good take on trees yall. 🤘🏼🌳💨

Chicken Man Cory

Trees are now refusing all (carbon) loads. Disgraceful.

tom's comment about beaver pelt tradesmen in the U.P killed me

BB

Joe Biden needs to be chained to a rock on top of a high and inhospitable mountain to have an eagle come and eat his innards every day. Knew the man was evil, but god damn man.

Sage

They want what that have always wanted since the end of WW2, domination of Russia and China. The middle east is part of that long term plan. I don't think it's gonna happen cause Iran's gonna fuck their shit up on a level no one has ever seen (probably). That Chapo article didn't worry me as much because they aren't anything like the actual facists of old, the post war Confederate Guerilla (Klan et al) or even the white power movement post Vietnam. sure, some of them may have military XP but not enough nor the right kind to be a threat to capital or used by them effectively. And the capitalist class isn't going to let them just fart on their desks again. the capitalist's "work, widgets, and treats" method of control still functions effectively on most of us regardless of our place in the strata of the working class. If that starts to really shift, like let's say Iran drives oil up to idk 10 to 20 dollars a gallon, then we might have a situation that will be bad but also rich in opportunity to build street fighting, party-structure having, working class power. Idk. Maybe

Jennifer Hammerhead

What’s the book?

Sonicthunder35

As a lover of wetlands and bogs, hell yeah.

Sonicthunder35

And in no way will that turn into a giant rubber band in 15-20 years and come flying right back in the faces of US elites.

Sonicthunder35

I've moved past the point of being burned by the Electoral College and just find it extremely funny now. Last cycle it was trendy to talk about the filibuster as a Jim Crow relic but from what I understand the Electoral College is a fucking Holy Roman Empire relic, where the "prince-electors" would vote to decide who would become the emperor.

Some Guy

I’ve been daydreaming about the financial/court adjudicated collapse of the Republican Party and the Democratic Party assuming the furthest right position, since they’re more or less there.

Eva

Oh, you mean the lovely pukeberry tree?

Ralley Taura

I know when I've ridden my bike over gingko droppings in the city--I smell that shit forever.

carl

Don’t get it twisted; the energy IS on the right - it’s in the Democratic Party. The Republican Party from the 90s is the Democratic Party now. The democrats are NOT “left” in any conceivable way

William

I completely disagree- they do see the left as a threat, which is why the rising stars in BLM, in Ferguson, all mysteriously died from gunshots to the head and their cars burned. They don’t take chances for any Fred Hamptons or Bobby Seale-s, or Huey Newtons to emerge

William

They’re stupid enough to just make that dumbass mistake - not sure it’s worth giving it a paranoid critical eye

William

Re: the Middle East: I can only guess two things. First, with most neocons having their political strength buttressed by oil and defense dollars, they want to exert some sort of long-term control over most of the world’s proven reserves. Second, because nobody has had a bright idea in the last 50 years, they’re still trying to disrupt any possible Asia-Germany economic unit, because the marriage of cheap resources (mostly from Russia) and an industrial powerhouse like Germany, has long been seen as the only possible counterbalance to US economic might. My guess is that they are stupid enough to think they can create a sort of pan-Arab state (maybe wahabist) that they can use as a regional antagonist against Russia, but possibly also China, now

William

For a bunch of guys who are depressed and have a bleak outlook, you guys seem to keep looking at the most blood curdling shit; no way I’m seeking out the video of a whale getting bloodily scalped by a blunt object (boat hull)

William

As a bad pun smith, I’m doing the citizen Kane clapping gif. I’m jealously annoyed at how visceral my reaction was

William

I've voted cease fire in my early presidential ballot. I urge anyone who doesn't want to vote for either of these stilted monster goons to do that. That way you can still vote for your towns own mini monster goons and local legislation.

Eric Murphy

The Trump McDonald’s thing was genuinely funny

Uso Dayo

My read on that was that while there are many "-isms" spread among undecided voters (racism being one) the one that applies to all of them is narcissism. I'm not sure I agree though that there are many (if any) racist undecideds.

Lucy McGillicuddy

You think "Pokémon Go to the polls" is bad wait until they unveil their "walk tuah polling location" campaign.

Lucy McGillicuddy

Ginko trees were thought to be extinct until they found them alive and well in Japan. In England they were only known as fossils. The official tree of Tokyo. The nuts are tasty if you cook them

Uso Dayo

Exhausted PA voter, and of course it goes without saying that what would be a decisive bloc of undecideds, including young voters, aren’t weighing Kamala vs. Trump but waiting in vain for any movement on an arms embargo (“Kamala vs. the couch” as I heard one of the Pod Johns himself put it!!) But that narrative will never be as appealing as a 50 year old union guy in Erie, and to the extent that it’s even mentioned, will be cast as voters’ moral failure

Rachel W

In the portion at 18:00 on Sinwar, I thought I’d share this. I think Tarence and Tom remember Gary Potter, who was a member of DSA’s Commie Caucus with me. Before he passed he shared a really beautiful goodbye message with us, and it closed with “continue to the bitter end. See you at the barricades.” I often come back to this in my dark moments, that there isn’t really an alternatively or more greatly redeeming form of sacrifice in life than to the communist struggle. After all the acts of great courage by the Palestinian resistance this year, and seeing Yahya Ibrahim Hassan Sinwar’s final moments, I could imagine Gary now amending his goodbye with, “see you when the drone visits”. This was a great episode, thank you guys for keeping at it, I don’t know if I’d be able to keep going without the deep passion and insight that you all share here.

Baron

Found the link to the original study from that Guardian article, I’m only now remembering that this first got published like MONTHS ago. https://arxiv.org/pdf/2407.12447 The most frustrating thing, as an environmental compliance consultant, about this study, is that environmental science as a field has known for fucking decades that forests are not even comparably as reliable of a carbon sink as grasslands, peat bogs, marshlands, and ponds are. Because of vegetative growth and nutrient cycling, woodlands don’t really have a ton of reliable capacity to store carbon, at least in comparison to herbaceous and wetland plant complexes. And yet, the entire market-side environmental movement have been dripping in their pants over carbon credits for the timber industry, when it’s much clearer now that we just have gotta stop developing these other habitats for real estate. Idk, fuck the market environmentalists is all I’m saying, they’re 100% at fault for this.

Baron

I have to bring a correction to your statement that North American history begins at 1776. We do learn a lot about 1607 and Jamestown. I mention that because IMO the lost period of time in our history is around the time of the English civil wars when the crown lost focus on nation building in North America. The English were far weaker than the native nations who they were forced to negotiate and trade with at the time for survival. They actually had some tribal representation in the government at Williamsburg. Once the English started to focus back on the colonies, it led to events like Bacons rebellion when some still unknown tribal forces started attacking colonial settlements. In response Bacon's followers organized xenophobic attacks against random tribes who were not responsible for the attacks. Basically a shit show that resembles the nativist bullshit stoked by Andrew Jackson, George Bush, Trump and BB.

Sam Elzarian

Swing State sounds like a sequel to Idiocracy

Warbs

Damn. I didn’t even see this posted

William

I think the thing with the trees and carbon is that forest fires are now burning more carbon than forests are sequestering. Which could be reversed if lumber industry didn't run the show in us and Canada

TJ

I love living in Pittsburgh. I'll hopefully never need to move away. I hate living in PA every four years. The presidential election cycle is absolutely unbearable.

Sean Dickey

as your resident UP Michigander, I can attest: the Dems ain’t winning hearts and minds in the North!

David Exelby

My worst politician handshake: Artur Davis

sarah

Keep it going boys, we need it

Jim McElroy

Psychotic is such a weird word to use. Asshole is subjective enough where I can't really argue against it, but to call lamenting a genocide paychotic is just so the opposite of what that word actually means.

Andrew Dunn

Narcissism explains pretty much everything in America.

Brendan Garcia

I’m reading a book on the removal of the Ohio Indians after the war with techumseh and it just keeps making me think of how settler colonialism has to expand and the deeply fucked things it does to the minds of those doing it

Mae Berens

Gotta promise protections for cryptids in the Black Forest

Andrew Dunn

Politics used to end at the waters edge. Now it ends at campaign policy

Only female ginkgo trees make the stinky fruit, I've heard tell. Lovely yellow leaves in fall, at least!

James Paisley

Nah. It is the female tree. Used to live in an apartment building that had a couple of female ginkgos out front. Shew-ee. I’ve got a male in my yard and it is typically the last tree to drop its leaves and it makes for a lovely gold blanket gathered around the trunk.

Holler dweller

Yo Aaron! White male suburban Philadelphia voter here…you guys have definitely influenced me.

Kevin McNamee

Zionism is a racist ethno-supremacist ideology. Picking the side of Zionism is racist, yeah

N

...and not to be facile, but it's really annoying and jerk-off-motion when dunces on the right talk about imaginary mind-viruses when there are actual, and very real mind-viruses that's out in the open and completely baffling. "We have always been at war with Eastasia..I mean Iran" is one of them, and "Israel must do whatever it wants. if they didn't exist, we would have to manufacture a proxy-state like Israel" is another. They are mind-viruses in the sense that they are completely alien sentiments to get animated about, and that nobody reasonable would just come to without an absolutely schlerotic and obtuse set of intellectual and moral weights and pulleys. Lindsay Graham doesn't know anyone in Iran. He's never been. But he's absolutely on board with wiping it off the face of the earth. Just the gall of this knotted closet-case in the US - a complete upstart of a country - being so cavalier about a place he has no stake in, no personal relationship to, and is one of the oldest countries/civilizations in the world. And for what? Because you're a grotesque, chocolate-sticky johnny-come-lately that went to a made-up fancy school where they taught you a bunch of bullshit you never bothered checking even once if it lined up with actual reality? Is it because you never came out and you know everyone more or less openly considers you a laughing stock, and getting rid off Iran will somehow soothe that feeling? Do you think if you played a key hand in the destruction of Iran that they wouldn't still think of you as nothing but an f-slur? It's just - the gall. Regardless of anything else, but just the gall. Like, who do you - the US - think you are? It really is the renaissance of W-era "I can't find it on a map, but I'll gladly bomb it in a heartbeat" american-swine-hour. I have a feeling that whatever international goodwill that the Obama-years may have built up is going to be burnt real fast when people in both parties are this eager to go back to 00's dumb little piggie shit like this. ...and why does the US have to "have a main enemy"!? Who is Norway's main enemy? Who is Botswana's main enemy? Who is Iceland eyeing next? What is this pew-pew-white-hat-black-hat embarassing baby-brained bullshit? I'm so profoundly tired of the US's whole deal, and by extention any person or institution that constantly humors it, when it should be immediately disqualifying to do so.

Jesper Ohlsson

Are you guys just being assholes? Calling undecided voters racist? That is a psychotic take. By that, I mean that it sounds like something only the annoying-ass liberal political class would say.

Katherine Moss

Almost like it's on purpose.

Lucy McGillicuddy

Granted, it was never a promise that anyone would learn after Hillary ate shit, but it was a reasonable guess that people who are paid to do so, would do so (or at least try to suggest something else). It's a little ookie-spookie (but well-deserved) if this is the second time in a row that the female presidential nominee loses to Trump by zipping around different groups in a tick-box-kind of way, assume that each courted group will remain static and "in" once you said what you needed to say, and aligning yourself with some irredemable ghoul for no reason in the 11th hour (Kissinger and Reagan for Hillary, Cheney-family for Harris). Time will tell if this also ends with hyper-focusing on one or two states, while showing open over-confidence (if not outright contempt) for anyone anywhere else. It's going to be tough for ladies if the second female democratic presidential nominee ever (in the US) both end up losing to one of the dumbest guys that ever lived. And he didn't even want it either time.

Jesper Ohlsson

In Philly and I sort of casually said to my friend in California that I have no intention of breaking my gold star never voted status and he said 'that's a bold statement for a Pennsylvanian to say'

L

These morons like to pretend it all started on Oct 7🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Cory Waring

Holy hell she went to Michigan and instantly said everything she could to lose it

Ben Meredyk

Those trees just need to pull themselves up by their root-straps and get back to work

Emma Joanna

I thought it was the males that dropped the vomit smell pods?

Jack Kasander

Ahh. You’ve got a female ginkgo tree.

Holler dweller

And Kamala loves to remind folks her background is in law enforcement, so don't forget kids, do we believe pigs? No, no we don't. Pigs lie and so does Kalama...pigs gonna pig.

Beatrice VonPage

This stuff is just like a headline I remember from The Onion "In international news, the equivalent of 5 Americans died in Afghanistan today." But it's the real fucking news and our "leaders" saying it explicitly.

Lucy McGillicuddy

In reference to Yayah Sinwar being killed, he 100% went out the way he wanted, per his own words. Everyone in his position ppreviously had been assassinated, eexcept 1 and since ge took the position he had said he wanted to die on his feet fighting for his land and people but that was not his original plan. He was in an Israeli prison for 22 years before being released in a prisoner swap. He went on to be a leader in his community working towards peace. He organized many of the 2018 protests that were peaceful for over a year until they were attacked by IDF snipers who took aim at medics, the disabled, media and children....because the most moral be on them morals. Long before Yayah loudly proclaimed he wanted to die fighting for his people, he tried for years to use peaceful means. Also fuck Israel.

Beatrice VonPage

Time magazine is so flaky. One week you're Man of the Year, the next week you're literally Hitler. It's like high school all over again.

Jesper Ohlsson
