my favorite hare brained compromise was an irish unionist proposing a flag for a united ireland that was similar to the Australian flag, the union jack in the upper left corner and the irish coat of arms where the southern cross is

There’s nothing like the moment when Tarence is reading something absolutely diabolical out loud and knowing that Aaron is about to let out a cry of anguish from so deep within you want to pat him on the back and tell him it’s going to be ok

gray

Terence please share the titles of the books you're reading 🙏 I just Black Reconstruction from the library!

❣️

Pratfall if she loses.. or wins.. Just depends on who's got that extra shitcushion!

Chicken Man Cory

klobuchar is absolutely the kind of person who for her whole life has consistently misunderstood someone staring "ugh, stop helping" daggers at her as "keep going, you're on fire".

Jesper Ohlsson

"Brat Fall? More like pratfall, amirite?"

Jesper Ohlsson

Ironically I've kinda been falling out with the tenant work lately due to the Palestine actions tiring out the teensy energy I have.

I really appreciate you three! I’m an old skate punk who ran with a wonderful group including black bloc activists in the Netherlands in the 80’s. It’s refreshing to hear young like minded folks from the “South” I say that because the media I grew up with, never had your voices, so thank you. Much love and respect to you and yours!

Aaron Hraba

was thinking about Sudan and how we are going to end up with something similar to their current rule, a Transitional Legislative Government led by Bernie Sanders and Dick Cheney

If Columbus is Jewish I can’t wait for Israel to defend him posthumously

Zach H.

Used to be married to a line medic who went to Iraq. He told me the same story. It was one of many despicable stories he told me about his time there.

The hypocrisy and delusion is out of control. It’s a feature of colonialism. I remember I book I read opened with a painting of "the last Indian" being presented with a descendant of said native depicted in the painting present

Remy

Thank you king. I too was incredibly moved by it. The parallels just in this one passage are almost too much to bear. As a Jewish Daniel, this genocide feels like our final rite of passage affirming our place in the community of whiteness.

Daniel E

“When a white man kills an Indian in a fair fight it is called honorable, but when an Indian kills a white man in a fair fight it is called murder. When a white army battles Indians and wins it is called a great victory, but if they lose it is called a massacre and bigger armies are raised. If the Indian flees before the advance of such armies, when he tries to return he finds that white men are living where he lived. If he tries to fight off such armies, he is killed and the land is taken anyway. When an Indian is killed it is a great loss which leaves a gap in our people and a sorrow in our heart. The white man seeks to conquer nature, to bend it to his will and to use it wastefully until it is all gone and then he simply moves on, leaving the waste behind him and looking for new places to take. The whole white race is a monster who is always hungry and what he eats is land.” -Chiksika to Tecumseh March 19, 1779.

Daniel

From one Daniel to another… i saw Tarence tweet a pic of this quote a couple weeks ago. I found it very profound. Looks like it is from “Allan Eckert’s Sorrow in Our Heart: The Life of Tecumseh”

Daniel

Aaron is 100% spot on if genocide isn’t your red line you don’t have one! Also regarding immigration Biden is on track to deport more people than Trump and Obama deported more people than both combined. Fascists all the way down

gavin curran

The US isn’t more fascist than it was 40 years ago, it’s pretty much as fascist as it has always been, except with the declining rate of profit, there’s less to go around after the rich take what they perceive to be “their share”

William

More like fricken DORK amirite folks

William

Isreal is plausible deniability for the US actions, in the same way that CIA handlers cultivate “assets” who accomplish the same goals as the CIA, without the agency’s direct involvement

William

it's 400 UN workers, not peacekeepers.

Abdulla Faraz

Can you share a text version of the quote from Tecumseh’s brother about the white man’s hunger for land? I cannot find it… (and the book title!)

Daniel E

The article should just be titled "Separate the Art from the Artist"

I doubt it. All you’ll get is more scolding.

This will be my first time voting green (voted for Biden in 2020) and I've decided this is my way to show them I here and voting, just not for republicans wearing blue. I'll show up to vote but if the want me to punch a ticket for them, they gotta earn it.

Armadillo_leaf

We got one in Panama City a few years ago and I was thrilled. Had never heard of it before. They gave you legitimately twice as much food as a fast food chain, for a dollar or two less money.

Andrew Dunn

I would love to get blown away Robocop-style in a voting booth.

Thanks again for your excellent analysis

I mean, we’ve all seen those maps with the scary sea creatures and mermaids on them - very risky!

Man the kind of person that could violate the trust of a child for fun is a soulless freak

BookMisser

Yeah the next time you all can’t bring yourself to talk about politics! I get it. I try and read New York Times coverage of climate change (bc occasionally they have important articles like the leaked methane detection work from years ago). But the coverage is so brutally misleading and grenwashy that my eyes just slide right off the page. Like I can’t even take the words in sometimes.

BookMisser

I wonder if hallmark ever printed happy Lee-Jackson-King day cards? I lived in Richmond most of that time but I couldn’t tell you what on earth a formal celebration looks like

BookMisser

I don’t know if folks mentioned this yet but Virginia had Lee-Jackson-King day for like 15 years.

Ectopic presidency

The Hopewell mounds park in Ross County Ohio doesn’t get a whole lot of attention. I guess not enough people want to drive around next to the prison to look at old trash piles, but the center of the park’s little museum is pretty great.

Eva

This was the fun stuff My sergeant promised me I would get to do Overseas when deployed.

Evan

Another story they told me was. They would throw Gatorades out to the kids from the backs of the humvees when they passed through town and soldiers would fill the Gatorades with their pee and throw them out along with the other gaterades.

Evan

Before I forget I gotta do this voice to text on the way to work. I'm was a medic in the Army and my teachers above me tell me stories about when they were in Iraq. They would give candy out to the kids and the kids with clambering over. They thought it was the coolest thing in the world. And so some soldiers would go over the hand out candy and when All the kids ran over to get the candy, they would fire off his M4 rifle straight up into the air and scare the kids away for fun.

Evan

heard from a friend of mine in NYC that the 311 app showed that trash collection was suspended for "Indigenous Peoples Day and Italian heritage day" which is honestly more lucid than World Explorers Day

zoë hayden

Said it before and I’ll say it again. Checking out of the election because both sides suck isn’t a gallant move. Invest that vote in The Green Party that at least reps Left policies. The sooner they become a viable 3rd Party (all it takes it to hit over 5%) and the next election you watch those Dems scramble to have and also come through w the demands and needs of the Working Class. 💚✊🏾✊🏼✊🏿💚🇺🇸

MYK’L ROCKS

This was a very good episode.

I feel like the motivators and ideological frames of all the powerful folks come from their bourgeois connections to the donor and capitalist class. And on Gaza, it's simple depopulation of a group that doesn't matter to them(it's so small, is what they will say), as well as one in resistance to the liberal capitalist order (Marxist guerrillas fighting alongside Islamist, fbow commies and conservatives fighting side by side)

Trey

Ya I voted cease fire again on my mail in ballot not that it'll do much in Massachusetts but at least my conscience is clean

Eric Murphy

The museum is so sick!!! Try and get to serpents mound in southern Ohio, it’s incredible. It also was built in this area that was hit by a large meteorite, so you’re in this really weird depression and get like no radio or cell signal in that area. Very interesting.

Afton

I need a whole episode about the mound culture and Mississippian peoples!! Cahokia was a larger/more populated city than London in 1000 AD!!

Afton

I’m here for it!! Been to Cahokia, Serpents Mound, trying to get down to Louisiana to see the mound structures there as well.

Afton

You guys how you can get through to people who vote for democrats. Well you got through to me. Can’t do it anymore. Thank you for this podcast, it’s really given me clarity on the reality of this election.

Nate Bridges

Shout-out to Panama City for having the only Tudor's Biscuit World south of Kentucky. And a Whataburger, and a Culver's. If you want to find your own regional fast food place outside of your region, it's in Panama City for some reason.

Andrew Dunn

I also get that reaction when I try to talk about mounds 😔

Steven

Terrance almost said "ectopic presidency" and, somehow, that feels accurate as well as hilarious.

Emily Epstein (unrelated to the bad guy)

Connor Friedersdorf sounds like me writing my first 5 paragraph essay in 8th grade.

Christopher McCollum

I went to Cahokia as my vacation this summer, the museum was closed but it was a beautiful sunny day, especially from the top of the primary mound. It'd probably be an 8 hr drive or more from Whitesburg, but I guarantee it's worth it.

Benjamin Robertson

doing "harm reduction voting" has been a common refrain for people roughly on "the democratic side of voting". I honestly think that rehabilitating Cheney - out of nowhere, and to the appeasement of basically nobody - is absolutely going to be a big factor for a bunch of people (and definitely anyone who is young enough to be "very online" all the time). I really don't get it; it's "Hillary's emails" but real and way, way, way, way, way worse in terms of turning off people who already had very mixed feelings about voting for Kamala. It honestly feels unprecedented as pointless, desperate moves go. It's very akin to Hillary's "Reagan as president helped open up the national discussion about AIDS [flattering; not back-handed]". ...but probably a lot worse, because only gays, leftists and gay-adjacent people actually care about keeping actual track on stuff like Reagan's role with AIDS in america, whereas literally everyone - american or not - has some kind of mental relationship with Cheney, and which more often than not is something akin to "being asked to touch a wolf-spider, and roughly as relatable if it was human shaped". If it turns out- a year or two from now - that this was the reason Kamala lost the election, then absolutely well deserved. It's such a completely unforced error, from a person (Kamala) who already has a problem coming across as a real human to normal people, and not a female version of the cockroach-guy from the first Men In Black movie. ...it's a pretty far drop from the time when she doing "everytin' gonna be iree, I smoka da doobie" was her most flop-sweaty and nakedly pathetic attempt at swinging for the favor of people who would never not see that for what it was. This is actually inexcusable. She deserves to eat shit in public. Unfortunately, her eating shit means Trump is in, and then it's individual game-theory whether or not that would be a good thing in the long run. ..as "harm reduction-logic" goes, this is probably the hardest election americans have had in recent history, by "virtue" of how openly gross the ostensible leader of the democratic party is behaving. It truly is something else. //EDIT: Hillary should 100% kill herself for doing that. Don't care at all if this ever comes back at me, and I don't have a jokey way to communicate it. She should end her life by her own hand for saying that Reagan played a leading role in making AIDS something america could talk about, and not the exact opposite; that he was the main spoke in the wheel whose inaction and open ridicule of AIDS lead to countless people dying needlessly before it became politically expedient to address it. In that way, the rehabilitation of Reagan by Hillary is somewhat similar to Kamala's rehabilitation of Cheney. Except - as I said - a lot more people are intimately aware of Cheney's deal, and the pay-off for rehabilitating him is "a couple of thousand more votes, maybe, spread across the country" in exchange for very likely turning off tens of millions.

When I moved to a new school district in 5th grade, the calendar still had MLK Day AND Robert E. Lee Day, which were on the same day. This was in 2002. Big change for me when coming from Martin Luther King Elementary.

Mcjibbs

My first comment.

Travis Dalenberg

I loved the Midwest goodbye here- must have said "I know we're closing out" a dozen times... and I'm glad they didn't!

Warbs

The real reason "dude, you gotta give it up for Christopher Columbus" is cancelled is that it's a sentiment almost exclusive to profoundly annoying italian-american Long Island shitheads, and maybe the one uncle in the family that makes a big deal about "being into history".

Jesper Ohlsson

I love Aaron’s takes but don’t like his new closed-mouth voice.

Jawn Feddermang

I think a lot of it comes down to a poverty of choice. There are 2 "viable parties", so it's your job to make voting for one of them at least arguably defensible. I'd like to think that people aren't dumb, and a big part of "all this bullshit" is simply that, and they are on some level very aware of what they are doing. If there was even one more party that was collectively understood as legitimate to vote for, a lot of this nonsense self-justifying (if not consciously self-lying) would decrease immensely. Obviously, there are many parties in the US. The real problem is that most of them - currently - are widely regarded as something you vote for if you want to be performative in how little you care about voting, or construed as spitefully trying to sway the election in favor of whatever party is understood to be "the worst". (ie, every vote that isn't for the dems, if you're not a republican, helps the republicans, etc). Two-party systems kinda naturally create this dynamic, and it gets worse the more time passes (and as the two parties accrue money and other resources to nip any up-and-coming contenders in the bud). It's a big reason why it's such a spectacularly bad system.

Jesper Ohlsson

They are going to do Project 2025 under Kamala and they are going to clap for it

Warbs

thank you for continuing to talk about Palestine even if it seems doom & gloom. I am watching these videos and constantly feel like I’m going insane. it helps me process it in some way, to know that other people are seeing & feeling the same things. I know it isnt easy to find a way to discuss it after all this time

Veronica

It really has gotten to the points where I see people who I legitimately respect and believe they have good politics talk themselves into mental gymnastics, and I've done it too, over Kamala. The Israel stuff and the Cheney endorsement and all of this right wing pivot is them telling us which way the party is shifting. Dems and "Leftists" who are trying to read between the lines sound like Republicans trying to explain why Trump doesn't actually mean what he says. At this point, their actions and words are lining up and are telling everyone exactly where this ship is going.

Jonathan Howard

That’s what the Special Economic Zones are for!

Baron

I don't think we're reentering anything. We never left imperialism. The contradictions between capitalist nations continue to accumulate and express themselves in war, surprising nobody. The world today is the same one parenti talked about a million times, just minus the countervailing force of the soviets.

Sai

That’s heroic bravery and skill according to the Atlantic!

Richard Cochnar

It's awesome to go to a place, be wrong, get corrected, and double down. - You guys are indians. - We're literally not. - ...yeah, but you're indian though.

Jesper Ohlsson

Look, orienteering is hard, ok? Sometimes you forget to turn the map with the compass.

Jesper Ohlsson

As an explorer Columbus showed heroic bravery and skill? MF thought he landed in FUCKING INDIA.

Richard Cochnar

Nice to hear from all three of you today 🙂

AL

My history pickled brain remembers the Germans committed the Holocaust while we looked the other way. I also remember the nazis studied our racial laws when writing the Nuremberg laws. Long story short we should've gave the jews Bavaria or Montana.

Michael Wadman

"these natives arguably did the bigger crime: not being perfect victims. So, I guess that puts our spoofs and goofs as explorers at about even-steven, morally speaking." *puts newspaper-hat on head, honks kazoo*

That book is why i think the US isn’t going to decline in power for another 20-30 years, but also why i think China is the next host for capitalism

William

You CANT reach these people, you can only try to explain things after they’ve been changed by their experiences

William

I mean, it’s not funny, and Vance is an added threat with Trump. Heads they win, tails we lose

William

I have the website, I'm going to try to get a book as a Christmas present. But thank you.

Marcus

I think you're thinking too hard about it. America will not condemn or hold Israel accountable because Israel is doing things that America is entirely okay with. Edit: "what's more american than israel?" is 100% accurate.

Some Guy

That's basically been where I'm at. When Trump was in office it seemed like liberals had some spine. It's been repeated ad nauseum but example is obviously that when Biden took office they stopped caring about kids in cages, and now Kamala is taking a pretty clear anti-immigration stance to court the right liberals.

Some Guy

I think Trump might use the migration crisis to invade Mexico and establish like an occupied border strip. Curious what Greg Grandin is thinking on this, though he did just get a new manuscript finished last month.

Baron

How did we manage a Tudors built in Florida before Lexington?

Seth Jarrell

I feel like we’re finally getting to watch the whole Giovanni Arrighi theory of decline play out in the next couple years.

Baron

Have you read the Asad Haider piece on Palestine and Land? It’s in Viewpoint Mag, really good essay

Baron

Was that Adam Curtis?

Wilford

More like lord strokes

Wilford

It sounds like if the democrats win, it will be despite their best efforts. They seem pretty intent on finding out where most people's "man, fuck these people" threshold is.

Jesper Ohlsson

It’s funny how this could be the harm reduction vote, if only to blunt the odds of going to war somewhere. Probably would raise tensions domestically, given that last time, shitty people saw that as confirmation that they could do whatever they wanted

William

If Trump wins, maybe the Libs will actually give a shit about all the awful things happening again. When Biden first dropped I was totally willing to punch one in for Kamala—for about a week. But annoying liberals disabused me of that notion very quickly. Early voted for Jill Stein cause she was the most left wing person on my ballot.

Richard Cochnar

Coates is a liberal but decolonization is a basic liberal position. The genocide in Gaza is so clear cut that even a liberal should be on the right side of it. Which is horrifying that so many “liberals” aren’t

jabrd

That too.

Al Harris

or, and, facing the mirror in acknowledgment of our country’s heralded, historic, perpetual mission: procedural & codified dehumanization justifying the righteous slaughter and displacement of centuries of generations of people, pursuant to an aspirational future, knee-capped by the “irresolvable fundamental contradictions” therein. what’s more american than israel?

big bruh

I realized America will not ever condemn or hold Israel accountable, because it means holding itself accountable for countless horrors of Vietnam and Global War on Terror

The shift from subversive economic power to overt military power probably is due, in some part, to the degradation of the US/anglo hegemony. With declining profits and pending global catastrophe, there’s less reason to let the western developed world control the raw materials
