i tried to give my copy of the optimists daughter (was not a fan) to my local used bookstore and they rejected it so tarence may be onto something

Relistened to the debate-episode (friday's) today in the garden - and I know this term is completely played out and corny - but it's the most jokerfied I've ever heard Terrance. Just constantly cackling at the staggering levels of unresolvable absurdity that you're supposed to nod at, and go "uhuh, very interesting". It was very enjoyable.

Lmfao the place sells lactation cookies that help moms increase their milk supply, I don’t think they sell cookies made of human milk

They get tattoos of Dewey decimal call numbers the way Christians do with chapter and verse. Flashing my 901.36 HEGEL tattoo...

It's some real struggle-session-hours when non-american media has to cover the upcoming debate between Biden and Trump, and try to "mark, copy and paste" a narrative that this is - once again - the time for undecided voters to steeple their fingers, and make an informed consumer-choice about Serious Matters At Hand.

Jesper Ohlsson

The Golden Apples by Eudora Welty is a short story cycle inspired by the Song of Wandering Aengus by W. B. Yeats, an Irish poet. I loved it.

James Paisley

tom and tarence please please cover the debate tn

My cousin and I talked about The Outsiders when we were kids. I said I identified with the greasers and he thought about it and said he guessed he'd be a soc. Now I'm a communist and he's a hyper-libertarian cop (tbf we were both raised petit-boug) Also there was a modern Christian Slater Jekyll and Hyde show in the early 2000s

I got the Star Wars “Thrawn” trilogy from the 90s out of the library box by my house recently while using it to get rid of all my crappy books. Been a great palette cleanser after what I’d been reading the last couple years

michael benham

I got a solid book on Ancient Greek Political Theory out of a little free library in Birmingham, Alabama

Some Guy

I remember ranting to my therapist that Bernie and the Squad needed to do their own thing in that moment if they were serious about a real workers movement. Thankfully my therapist is cool so she wasn't jotting down numbers for a rubber room, but it's nice to hear the same thought from someone like Tarence.

Steven Pace

I think Bernie choked in the critical moment, and I think he was always that guy so we shouldn't be surprised. And maybe your argument is right, I don't know. But he could've just retired to his lake house and been a grandpa and lived out the rest of his days quietly and he would've remained a beloved figure, deserved or not. The fact that he instead has spent the last four years carrying water for the Dems does make me wonder how we were all so stupid and if he's just a dumbass or a coward or even a plant. Regardless he's a pathetic figure, what does he even get put of this?

Richie A

Fun fact. I have heard that Tolkien got all the Surnames for the Hobbit families out of the Lexington Kentucky phone book.

Joey Bag O Doughnuts

I noticed in the series they did on Amazon a couple years ago that the women often are part of the techno conspiracy against the protagonist and he usually has to hit them, too.

If you guys think people are annoyingly scolding the american left now, I don't know what to tell you what the hysterical tone would be if Bernie had decided to take the moment and make a splinter-party. It's a counter-factual, so it's sorta limited in a "well, that didn't happen, so who cares?" kinda way (..I don't really get the point about counter-factuals, though I understand why some like them; it's like speculative fiction about precise details of the actual history). Most importantly though, Bernie was never going to be that kind of person, because of his own proclivites. By the party's standard he's a full-blown communist, I guess, but he clearly is a party-man. His "radicalism" only look radical because the rest of the US political system is so insane (his most enduring plea was "why can't we have healthcare for everyone?" which is a really modest ask, and nontheless he was likened to Mao regardless). I also remember that at the time - in the aftermath of Bernie's defeat - the vibe was pretty hostile towards any kind of third-party/third-movement formation, so I think even if he had the actual will to "do it", I don't know if there was much appetite for it in general (within the movement). I feel like this is one of those situations that feel more cut-and-dry "oh dude, why didn't he do the thing?!" when you look back on it, but I feel like there were so many conflating factors (and the completely realistic fear of dooming the whole project to crank-territory) that it would have been really, really, difficult to transition the already sorta shaky "Bernie-contingency" to a whole new party or movement. Chiefly, it would have required the person at the top to have the will and conviction to do that, which Bernie didn't seem to have. Which is fine; it's no shade on him. He just wasn't the right person, for that moment, to be radical in that way. I guess the good news is that nothing is truly lost, if you're willing to look at what did and didn't work. The Bernie movement was a surprising flare-up of leftism in a country that till then had seemed like the most hardest of hard-right. So, what it does show is that there's clearly interest, and that's something. Things rarely go from zero to 100 in one perfect, smooth try.

RE: Israel-Gaza media coverage, the other day NPR not only repeated the trope of calling it “a war”, but said humanitarian aid can’t get through to Palestinians because of “fighting.” In that same segment, there was no mention of the homicidal actions of the IDF toward aid trucks and medical personnel. God forbid NPR does what a journalist outlet should and risk rocking their financial sector advertising base. Truly and pathologically craven media coverage.

Mike

Very good point.

SE Hinton had one of the best tweets of all time - someone asked her why Johnny had to die at the end and she said “because I’m a stone cold bitch.” She was a consultant for that Outsiders film and I think she’s got a small part on screen too. Also some of the actors asked her where she thought their characters ended up as adults and she told them they all died in Vietnam.

Love to hear Terrance talk about Hegel!

the CIA blew up the moon

I’ve heard a lot of discussion in other podcasts and articles that have picked up in the fact that a major reason for the BLM movement’s failure to gain traction in 2020 was its non-hierarchical structure. And people are finally waking up to that. I’m all about left unity, but I’m so fucking sick of anarchists these days. Some people gotta step up and be leaders. And now people are pissing their pants about the PSL taking a leading role in pro-Palestine protests. Somebody’s gotta do it, because fucking juvenile “authority bad” anarchists sure as hell aren’t.

Grant

Dick in particular suffers from a bad case of Divorced Guy Energy. In fairness to ol’ PKD: one of his last novels, The Transmigration of Timothy Archer, was the first time he wrote an entire novel from a woman’s POV with a personality as complex and nuanced as his male leads. He finally cracked the code on how to write women who existed outside of his Madonna/Whore spectrum… and then died before he could take it any further.

In the Reading Rainbow documentary "Butterflies in the Sky" it shows Levarr Burton doing a pretty good job putting up a defense of the commons. That public institutions are attacked because they are public, and that culture war shit is primarily pretext to place public resources in private hands. Like things that can't be extracted and exploited are deemed unfit to exist for their own stated purpose. I thought it was a pretty good doc.

Sarah Tippishly

Library designer here with a big shout out to Aaron and the boys for recognizing these places for what they are. The last free civic third place we have left. Would be remiss to not offer a shout out to the librarians everywhere. Find me someone that knows their at risk community better than a librarian. I'll wait up. Vote yes on your referendums everyone.

Def modafinil. I tested that stuff with my friends and family & the results were amazing.

I hear ya, but I think it's just disaffected people with no real game plan except iconoclasm, for the spectacle of it. Iconoclasm is easy as these cultural nodal points are easy to identify, and people are generally do dumb shit when stressed and freaked the fuck out.

Regarding Aaron’s comments about J.G. Ballard having weird racist language in some of his stories - I feel the same way when I read sci-fi from the 50s-60s. I adore writers like Ray Bradbury and Philip K. Dick, but my goodness did those men have a failure of imagination when it came to women. You’ll be reading this story that takes place 2000 years in the future and every female character is either a secretary, teacher, or housewife. Tell me how you can imagine all kinds of new technology and environments but a woman captain? “Whoa there, that’s just a little too unbelievable” lmao.

Kelley

Maybe I'm psyop-pilled but I'm convinced "protests" like Stonehenge are psyops to discredit climate activists and activism.

I think it was norm Finkelstein who also said bernie had a moment to do something and he folded. And how disappointed he was in him knowing him since high school. I think we need to be more critical of who we are embracing. It’s tough because we are looking at scraps with how fucked everything is. Bernie is the same guy who is saying right now that “Israel has the right to defend themselves,” defended the nato bombings of Yugoslavia and who supported Clinton after nafta. I agree with Terrance that when the opportunity arises we need to take advantage of it like lenin/castro. We need to embrace leaders and movements who are ready for that. In the meantime communists should be trying to radicalize more people, doing mutual aid and showing people that socialism/communism isn’t a dirty word. Be normal about it. Not online weird. A friend recommended this show to me. I grew up in NC and now live in the sticks of Wisconsin with trumpers surrounding me. This show makes me feel less insane and makes me laugh. Thank you.

M

Yes. For the discussion.

Grant

I think it is defeatist to not criticize the Stonehenge protests. Not all protests are created equal, particularly as they relate to form and content. If the form, the physical actions, messaging, and space of protests do not match the content; the subject and current event worth protesting, then you alienate people who would otherwise be valuable comrades. Conversion and optics are the name of the game, unless we plan on doing things that cannot be discussed online. The Stonehenge protests alienate people who are interested in archeology, art history, anthropology, or history in general. These are people who would otherwise be very amenable to any climate justice movement. Neo-lithic civilizations played no part in our climate emergency. So the form and content do not align. Form and content do align in the actions of painting private jets. These misaligned protests set back our organizational ability in the long-run, as we need to be tactically efficient in how we go about converting the masses onto our side. I agree, they are the agonal breaths of a dying empire, but more so in how very disorganized, infantile, and regressive, these protesting tactics are. We need to hone our tactics, under the expertise of a lenin figure/movement. 2020 was an open window. I think we are on the cusp of a new, much larger opening and need to be ready to break through at all costs.

Alan Moore’s dialogue has always sucked. It’s like his trademark.

Holy shit Aaron's "I have a dream" got me so fucking good.

We have a restaurant in Colorado called Cheeba Hut that is basically the business plan of Placebo. The sizes of sandwich available are Nug (kids), Joint (regular), Blunt (Large). Every sandwich is a weed strain and the whole restaurant is weed decor.

Tyler

Please. We’ve been begging for months.

Tyler

Don’t know if still the case, but I recall Lexington PD used to roll their Segways right up into the main library. Could put the biker branch at significant disadvantage when it comes to maneuverability.

There’s a lot of perversion going on in trillbilly land - backstabbers, now walls

I think I confused Eudora Welty with Evelyn Waugh.......
