I'm enjoying this new american-taliban-Tarrence, were the US is not only irredemable, but borderline supernaturally evil.
Like it's a place that's been karmically irradiated, fit for humans in a thousand years at the earliest, rendering any project within its confines slated for the near future a ridiculous concept.
The actual land is fine. But the superstructure that washes over it is a page-one-rewrite.

...Only because he has white-girl "why can't people spell my name correctly? It's Meghauyhn, duh" whined about it on the pod in the past, the way I remember to spell his name is "it's Tarence, like a Tarantula".
Tarantula is coincidental as a memory-hook, but most people have some kind of reaction to spiders, so it sticks. It's not intended as some inscrutable shade.

Justin Timberlake embodies the ~2005-2015 era of AAA action video game covers. Just a generic dude with a buzz cut, nothing that stands out

I’m surprised Macklemore didn’t come up during this conversation about white rappers. I know he’s largely considered corny but I feel like he ticks the box of not taking himself too seriously. I can’t help but give him props for Hind’s Hall, no other big name artists sticking their necks out like that.

It’s so funny in retrospect, the moment in a young Christian boys life when he makes the decision to risk his immortal soul for a single decent track. If slim was Christian I’d be a priest rn.

So I'm only like 17 minutes in but I gotta say I'm a lil sad at no love for Chris Kirkpatrtick from Nsync. He's my local boy (He grew up in NWPA, like less than 20 miles from where I grew up), he's a fellow poor (even more poor than I grew up), and he went on to do some really silly voice acting stuff.

I didn't particularly mind Bob Dylan voice, but it did really highlight to me how much the phenomenon of "what is being said right now is poignant, and is going somewhere to a larger point" is 90-95% down to tone or inflection.
If you have a wistful way of talking, you can basically lean back and go "one fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish *drags cigarette*...it's all green eggs in the end", and there's an NPR reporter on the other side of the table wildly nodding and going "uh-huh.. green eggs..wow *scribble, scribble*".

I almost used the "word you're not supposed to use anymore" (starts with a "w") but decided it was a bit too spicy (and honestly not my place; I'm not black).
There was so much of that in the 00's from white male artists who all of a sudden "became very cool, out of nowhere".

Justin Timberlake spent most of the 00's doing to contemporary black artists what Corey Feldman did to Michael Jackson (style-wise), but because he never really got called out for it, we were all supposed to not take note of all his fedora-wearing, borderline AAVE-antics on tv.
Also, yes - not hot. He is to basic gays what Taylor Swift is to basic girls.

My favorite part of the Britney Spears memoir audiobook, read by Oscar winning actress Michelle Williams: “One day, J and I were in New York, going to parts of town I’d never been to before,” Williams reads. “Walking our way was a guy with a huge blinged-out medallion. He was flanked by two giant security guards. J got all excited and said, so loud, ‘Ah, yeah! Fo’ shiz, fo’ shiz! Ginuwine! What’s up, homie?'”

Take this with a huge grain of salt because I probably haven't listened to them in fifteen or twenty years, but I will go to bat for the first two Snow Patrol albums. They had more of a shoegazy, power pop edge to their music when they started out, but after they got famous off Chasing Cars, they went soft and never looked back.

Only half way through the ep, so I apologize if this is actually covered, but I think there is a spiritual connection between Eminem and South Park and I have to say it because this is one of the topics I'm obsessed with and I have poor impulse control.
Both push the boundaries of what you could say in entertainment but neither were particularly subversive to the status quo.
I think this all relates the the "End of History", wherein an end of political possibilities breeds a sort of political nihilism. If neoliberalism is all there is, then presumably we've resolved issues like racism, sexism and homophobia up to the point we're actually going to solve them, but race, sex and non-heterosexuality still contained the possibility of offending people and were thus imbued with a impotent power.
There's always a thrill in saying the forbidden but, from the late 90s to the late 00s, there was nothing left but that cheap thrill.
I think this explains the rise of Eminem to some extent and why he no longer feels relevant. He represents a time when there was nothing more to say but provocation and provocation, while feeling dangerous, was actually really safe because there is nowhere left to go.
This is the inverse of our current moment where the only thing we can all agree on is that, whatever this is, it isn't gonna last long.
