You can exist in a world where the sudden appearance of a reddish cow in a country you've never been to means something, but you're absolutely forced to also exist in a world where things are tiptoeing around the shared understanding that some countries have nuclear weapons, and others don't (and only one used it, in quick succession, like a kid trying out a new toy). I guess these things mean something in a particular, american context. But from an outsider's perspective, it's as pagan as anything. You exist in the nuclear age. You can will yourself to be scared about a cow of another color. But you honestly aren't. Not really.
