Another historical movie and book that explains the incredible outward calm of the Apollo 13 astronauts in real life is "The Right Stuff". (As with many movies, the book is much better). In those days, all of the USA astronauts were, and even today most of them still are, military test pilots, whose mission was to test the limits of aircraft, putting themselves into mortal danger, and then somehow bring themselves back from the edge and safely land the plane. Listening to their communications with the control towers, it is shocking how many of them remained outwardly calm even when it was clear that they were about to die in a horrible crash.
