Good question, animagus can transform whenever they want. In the books, werewolves simply turn to a regular sized wolf that is quite rabid, but one the transformation is over, they remember all they did. With the Wolfsbane, they maintain their sanity and can think and control themselves. The movies went with the more classical humanoid form that we know from cinema. I opted for something different; Its a bit spoilery so feel free to ignore. The regular wolf form is changed to a much larger sized wolf (Not to the extent of a direwolf, but clearly magical). Every werewolf simply gets a lucky draw on which form they are stuck with. More will be explained in future chapters
