Songs of Travel: Modes of Transportation | Fan Favorites - Episode 39

I'm pleased to share this episode of our Fan Favorites series. We've got nine songs with wide-ranging musical sounds and aesthetics, all including some of our favorite mentions of modes of transportation. We've got two racecars, a motorcycle, a big yellow taxi, a 1952 Studebaker Coupe, a silver Thunderbird, and an airplane...and maybe some implied 'brain enhancements'. I hope you enjoy!

Repertoire:

Primus - Jerry was a Racecar Driver
Rush - Ghost Rider
Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi
Gary Numan - Cars
The Byrds - Eight Miles High
Van Halen - Panama
Neal and Jack and Me - King Crimson
Marc Cohn - Silver Thunderbird
Pink Floyd - Learning To Fly

Just a guess about Joni and her guitar... I think that might have been an encore, since she said she wanted to sing more but her pipes were going. I wish my voice sounded that good when my pipes were going! But anyhow, perhaps that song had the capo in a different spot or it's in a different tuning than her last song, so she needed to retune.

We need more Primus on the channel!

I always loved that ending vamp on the synths in "Cars". The hypnotic swirl of the phased synth lines. The sparseness is its specialty with those intervals of the two lines crossing and complementing each other. I think it is that mixolydian mode which adds to the dreamy vibe.

Wow, just listened to Ghost Rider for the first time. An incredibly poignant song. It must have been hard for Neil to write something so personal.
