POLL: Pick the next Extended Play Lounge

To follow close on the heels of our Fan Favorites video that celebrates music by women, I'm asking for your help to select one of these five classic (pre-1980) albums by women or featuring women. I'm most familiar with Rumours and least familiar with Horses...the rest are kind of in the middle. Pick your favorite! Happy voting.

I understand...I try to balance things out as much as I'm able.

R. Douglas Helvering

My first Joni album was “The Hissing of Summer Lawns” which I loved then moved back to “Blue”. Ye Jedi, what an album. Still top of my ladies of music listing.

John Baird

It's finally great to be here everyone. I finally got Rumors on vinyl.

Shayne Mowery

I'm having flashbacks to Behind the Music. Two sentences dedicated to the early years, a couple minutes spent on Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham joining, a couple minutes on the first album, and then about a YEAR of saying the same things about Rumors over and over and over and over and over again, and then a minute for Tusk, two sentences dedicated to the decade that came after, and then a few minutes on Bill Clinton and a resurgence in popularity. I have to stop myself before I say any more about it.

Ray Sincere

@D Can't agree more, people should broaden their horizons!!

Rolling Ronnie

The Breakup Album of the century

Rebecca Walsh

It's frustrating seeing these super popular albums win the EPL voting by plurality.

Both of my parents had the Rumours album(as did the rest of the world at that time?) so that’s what I’d like to hear. It might be cool if you reviewed the PBS reunion special they had in the 90’s too

Our formative musical encounters are often hard to dislodge, sometimes calcifying into loyalty: my Fleetwood Mac still has Peter Green in it; my Joni Mitchell and, say, Beach Boys preferences are for their mid-career work; Carol King? "Tapestry" is the only full album that I know, but it is so richly varied that I'm always happy to revisit it; Fairports? "Unhalfbricking" appeals a little more than "L&L" but both have their musical rewards; Patti Smith is the only artist whom I approach cold, and I'm afraid a quick trip around my chosen streaming service still leaves me cold. Performance poetry combined with a musical era that never fully registered with me (well, life can get in the way at times), except perhaps for John Cooper Clarke. In terms of unconventional female vocalists/song writers, I would list mid/late Marianne Faithfull ("Broken English"), Carla Bley, Annette Peacock, Edith Piaf even. So within the current poll, I will stick by Carole King's inventive and emotive words and music. The streaming world and music charts (Hit Parade, anyone?) have so fragmented the musical experience that the carefully plotted sequencing of many albums is lost; many songs are diluted by over-playing in a wallpaper of sound. Stopping and returning to the original album, as was, can often be a joyful reunion.

Love the estrogen here, but... no Kate Bush?

Jesstifer

They're all indispensable

Please, no. I heard FAR too much of Rumours back in the 70s. If this one wins, I'll be taking a pass.

Bill Brinkmoeller

Carole King is one of the greatest songwriters of our time. Tapestry showcases some of her versatility. Some of her collaborations with James Taylor and Carly Simon are legendary. If you haven't experienced any of this wonderful music, it's definitely worth your time.

Greg in east TN

I agree, Rumours has been done to death. Tapestry is much the same. Joni’s having a (well-deserved) moment, especially after the Grammys, so spotlighting Blue to those who aren’t already familiar would be a great offering.

Margaret Barnes

I was thinking the other day that Doug should do some Joni Mitchell. Blue is perfect for an EPL!

Mats Lange

Songs from Rumors and Tapestry are excellent but so pervasive that absolutely no new ground will be tred. Regarding Blue - if you dig Joni, you know it like a book, if not, you'll hate it. The most interesting reaction, IMHO, would be Horses.

Christopher Arters (relative timeworx - Mr.A)

All I know is Fleetwood Mac. So my vote is all I know.

Adam Henton

Sandy also featured in last year's "Songs by Women FF" video ( with Who Knows Where The Time Goes ) and may yet make the cut in this year's poll with Fotheringay.

Voting for Liege and Lief! *THE* classic British Folk-Rock album! Featuring singer Sandy Denny, who Doug recently heard singing on Led Zeppelin's "The Battle of Evermore"

BRIAN MILLER

This might be the toughest vote yet. I want to see your analysis of all of them!
