I liked it, at least up to the point at the very end where the weird shit started happening. Was that necessary? I marked 15-20 favorite passages or quotes which I'll go back to. I've never experienced addiction nor been close to anyone who has, that I know of (other than a terminally ill friend who was addicted to his pain meds, but no one even hinted he should give them up), and Cyrus gave me a look inside that world that I can only assume comes close to the mark. I'd like a friend like Zee.

while i loved pieces of martyr!, i wish i could have loved it more. the writing was so incredibly intricate and beautiful and i am excited to get my hands on other works by akbar. but for one, i sort of disliked cyrus and found myself at times getting genuinely frustrated at him. my favorite chapter of the whole book was when him and zee fight in the hotel room - it was like, “ finally someone said it!“. i also found the plot rather predictable with his mother and all, though i would definitely describe this book as one a lot more character than plot central, which I do prefer overall. I did really enjoy this reading experience because of how much I loved the writing and the depth of the other characters; thus i found myself enjoying the parts that weren’t through cyrus’ point of view the most. as an artist/painter i really enjoyed the way they talked about art, and of course all the culture knowledge and political insight. early on in the book when the author describes the bottomless pit feeling in your chest that accompanies depression as the “doom organ“ i fully got chills - i will be using this description of it forever from on. there are countless other really great quotes from this book like in orkideh's obituary: when i say "nations," i mean "armed marketplaces." as well as cyrus' description of living the poems he wasn't writing - "looking at all the shattered fundament of his living and thinking "i'll use this later". overall, while maybe not a new favorite i did really enjoy this reading experience.
