The Wait for...

I find the notch near the top of the grocery envelope and tear it open.

Three long, flat packages go straight into the freezer. I upturn the bag over a drawer and dump the rest out before picking up one packet, which I unwrap. I toss the lump within into a measuring cup, pour water over it, and stick it in the fridge.

As I'm throwing away the grocery packaging, I notice that our mailbox indicator light is on. I open the box and pull out some envelopes that I can't seem to force myself to read. Knowing them to be bills or worse, I throw them in our vertical filer. One bounces off and falls on the floor, but I ignore it.

There's one larger package, though; the stiff envelope maintains its shape as I lift it up. A look at the return address confirms that it is likely a painting by my partner's niece, who said something about getting into art during our last video call. I set the envelope on the counter and look over at the walls.

How are we going to put it up? We're not even supposed to use that tacky stuff that doesn't work on the walls.

I rub my eye and lean the stiff envelope on the counter and against the wall.
