WIPWed Pirate Princess 3

I've been working really hard on client work this week. Specifically, I'm working with Jessica Mathews again to put out the third installment of her Pirate Princess series. This is a rejected cover design illustration. I was fond of it, so I thought I'd feature it as well as talk a bit about the process of working with clients.

When I work with a client, we have a discussion meeting about what they are hoping for in the final and get the feel of what they want. Then I create three mockup designs. 1, exactly what they wanted to the best of my understanding. 2, What I would design if it were my project. 3, A compromised design about halfway between. I present the three options to the client and they pick which direction they like the best, which I then use to make a more advanced mockup.

Sometimes clients have an idea of what they want, but when they see the artist's idea they like that better. Sometimes the in-between concept is an enhancement of the client's original idea that they're really into. Sometimes the different concepts frees the client's mind to think in completely different directions and create a fourth concept that's completely off the wall! And sometimes, as in this case, the client knows exactly what they want and pick the first option. Jessica's been at this long enough to have a clear sense of exactly what she needs before we start, so the final cover that she will reveal will be the true vision. This is a rejected design, but I was still fond of it. It makes me think of a James Bond movie.
