The devil is in the details

I've showed you the Jack of Diamonds of the MxS Casino deck already in the second to last post. But did you noticed that he is holding an axe instead of a spear?

If you take a look at the shoulder part where the spear was before you can see that I've continued the design behind the spear seamlessly until the edge.

I'm going very deep into nerdy talk now since it's something where I put hours and hours of work into. Lately you see quite a few decks where the weapons got removed or relaced with other objects. And I've noticed that 90% (maybe even more) completely fail when it comes to the redrawing of the missing body parts behind the weapons. People aren't able to complete a curve. Most of the time it looks weird and crooked. I would love to show you some examples, then you also can't make it unseen anymore but of course I won't make fun of anyone's work. And yes I get it. A curve is more complicated to complete. But people aren't even able to draw straight lines and it happens way too often that they continue with a different thickness for the lines.
The lack of love and appreciation for the details really hurt my heart.
I wish I could but it's a kind of cynicism that I can't simply shake off. But I also get that probably no one else put so much time into these details than I do. So I can understand when people don't really care or know it better.

On the majority of the courts there are some small changes. One detail that I really like as well is the new shape of the scepter that the Jack of Spades is holding. I also changed the size of his eye and added an extra line to get one step closer to the standard court card design.

I thought an animated gif is the best way to show you the changes on the number cards compared to the 10 of hearts from the latest Black Roses / Remedies decks. You'll notice that the heart shapes are a lot smaller. But I also changed the thickness of the numbers. Everything is a bit thinner/smaller now for a more vintage feel. Something you can't really tell but the Heart shapes are a bit sharper on the bottom. I'm sure that changes a lot in the whole look and feel when you hold the cards in your hands.

Currently I'm waiting for the cold foil samples from Hanson Chien and there is still a lot stuff to do for the Dondorf fulfillment. The regular Dondorf decks get printed this week. The White Gold Edition is already finished and on the way to Murphy's Magic. So we are pretty well in time.

Much love

Daniel

Yeah we didn‘t show the back yet. There are no rules for a Casino deck. The Casino decks that you see from all the designers of course aren‘t real Casino decks. So the only goal is it to create a deck that looks like a real Casino deck. And when we are talking about Casino decks we mostly think about the Jerry‘s Nugget or Golden Nugget Playing Cards. There is a spirit from the 70s that I like to catch in my own decks. Bee Playing Cards are used in real Casinos. So it makes sense if a custom "Casino" deck also has Bee paper. But even that isn't even the main point of a Casino deck. I think it's more the fascination to create a deck of cards for a place that only exists in our fantasy :D

I know this is an older post, but it just occurs to me that I do not believe you have shown us the MxS Casino Back design. Or have I missed it? Okay, one more question, and I risk showing my own ignorance by asking this, but I am dying to know. What is the true definition of a "Casino" Deck? Is it the only the card stock, is it a back design that looks like it was inspired by a Casino Logo (e.g. Your Black Roses Casino, Cherrys, Jerry's Nugget, Fulton's Casino, etc.), or is there something else that makes it a "Casino" deck? Thanks!

Daniel's modifications on each new release, and his attention to detail really are the exception to the rule. While there are a lot of designers who create wonderful card back designs, most use standard faces (and often Daniel's faces). The more of Daniel's decks you get, the more you appreciate it!

As a relative newbie to the playing card circuit I do appreciate these updates. I did not realise the amount of effort that goes in to making and/or modifying them. Looking forward to further updates and the advancement of my knowledge :)
