I've decided to go with the standard court card colors for the Blue Magic Edition of the Black Roses Playing Cards. No other colors fit better to the blue back design.
Different colors on courts can look cool but there a plenty of examples where it doesn't look good at all. This happens when people think they need to change something because they have the opportunity.
If I wouldn't have my custom court cards I would also think standard colors aren't really satisfying. There is no work and effort at all. But with all the tweaks on the courts they get more interesting. And the best part about it - which is also a little ironic - not changing the court card colors makes them even better. They really look like standard cards on the first glance. I always liked the idea to surprise with a design when you take a closer look.
The Queen of Hearts - Désirée - received a lot adjustments since my first Black Roses deck. The current version has its first appearance in the Black Roses Hotel/Casino decks. At the beginning I thought I would make the card better with her long blonde hair all over the court. It was something new that I haven't seen before. But I realized getting closer to the standard court card design makes the court better. Same problem with the colors. Just because you have the opportunity to change everything, you don't need to exaggerate it.
If you look close you see an iPhone in Dési's hand. I replaced the apple with a pear since I don't want to get sued and pay Apple for the rest of my life. :D
Of course a phone doesn't really fit to a court card with medieval design and I'm normally strictly against those tweaks where something doesn't make sense. But which other object would fit better to a selfie queen?
Since last year Dési is a proud mother. I've integrated the name of her daughter in the card for the very first time in the Polyantha Playing Cards. You'll see it easier now since you know it.
As you can see I put a lot thoughts into my designs and I don't just replace a face to make the card look cooler. It's really personalized but in a non-intrusive way.
The urge is rising to start the Kickstarter campaign for this deck a lot earlier than I originally planned. But I also want to take my time for everything so that I can't blame myself if anything doesn't work like how I imagine it. These cards will become reality, no matter what.

Daniel
