David Blaine

At the beginning of 2019 I designed the court cards for the Madison Advocates.
In the design process of the Remedies we decided to split the face cards. 50% of the courts I want to see in this deck and 50% that D wants to see.
D told me to take a few courts from the Advocates but for the King of Spades I saw an opportunity that I would never get again that fast.
So I asked D if it's possible to add David Blaine to the deck.
One day later we already got an answer from David. He is ok with it as long we don't use his card heavily for promotion. We never did and we never had to. Also, nobody ever said "wow DB is in the deck I need to buy these cards". It was really just for myself.

We sent David a brick and he said he "digs" them. Imagine him saying that with all his hyperactivity. But I'm really happy about this. David has also nothing against it that we use his court in the next edition as well. And of course I don't want to replace this card.

Now look at the photo above. The card on top is DB's court from his latest deck release.
The card underneath is from the Remedies deck. You need tell me which card looks better.
I don't understand how Blaine's court card face got such thick lines. If you compare it with the original Split Spades KS - it didn't look like that at the beginning. I'm sure they lost DB's original court card file so they just photographed or scanned an old card. With sloppy editing those lines ended up that thick.

I've also "only" photographed an old card to get the face but I edited it so that everything fits to the rest of the court card. And I'm ALMOST happy with everything on the printed version. The chin line ended up a bit too thin. This will look better in the second Remedies edition. I've also redrawn the eyes - nothing that was really necessary but it will look cleaner at the end.

Actually for the next edition I replaced the whole court with my redrawn King of Spades file.
That's what I do right now with every card. I'm already working on this for a few weeks now.

If you look close, you'll see I also found a very good spot on the King of Spades where I've placed David Blaine's logo.

I also know all this work into the last detail is ridiculous since nobody would pay attention to it when I don't force people to look at it. But I know this sets my work apart from everybody else.

Thanks for reading and thanks for your interest and support. More Remedies V2 updates will follow soon.

I like the thicker contour of the face line. I think it creates more contrast and it provides better visibility to the face. I do like the more svelte nose line from your new design

Interesting. Let me know why you think that. I redesigned his court because the face didn't fit to the rest of the card. The lines were too thick compared to the rest. Like I have said, this happened because of sloppy work and nobody was really interested to make it better.

DB's court from his latest deck release looks better

It's something I've always appreciated about your decks, the time in effort you put into the details. Even if no one knows they're there, but you. I recently got your Redraw File, looking forward to using it for templating the 2 decks I'm working on. It's well done, and saves me time that I don't have!

People may not look at detail on a coscious level it is a subliminal effect that means people see something as quality.. Most people dont look at a masters painting and look at all the detail but they can see it is special just by how it is painted or drawn. The same is with playing cards. Just looking at them naturally displays quality which is recognisable

No worries

I wish I could tell you more but I forgot the details. πŸ˜‚

I saw that in his video, I just wasn't sure if it was real or not, haha. Is there a reason why? Does Madison know him?

Frank Cuccia

If you look even closer onto the court you'll see the name of that person is written on the card.

Daniel Schneider

That's a shame. Speaking about court faces though, is that really Shia Lebeof in the Pink Advocates?

Frank Cuccia

I really think they don't care about the faces at all. Otherwise they would have never released those cards.

Daniel Schneider

You should tell him you can sell him your design for his next deck.

Frank Cuccia

I mean you are the best court card artist...

Danny Carey

You have such a good eye! I appreciate the detailed work you do.

Lauren Winsby

Remedies 100% better

Gil Quaresma Nunes

I agree with the comments above. The thin lines are super clean! Siked for the Remedies V2!

Christophe Van Rietvelde

I keep saying it, when it comes to drawing court cards you're one of the best out there πŸ™Œ I've never liked the top court because of the thick lines, but you really did an amazing job! Can't wait to hear about Remedies V2! πŸ™ŒπŸ”₯

Martijn van de Kant

I agree, the thin lines makes it look way smoother. You can really see the different effect that it has
