0095b — A Deep Peek Behind the Scenes

This is a pretty good peek behind the scenes, in my humble estimation — First you see (on slide 2, sorry) as the idea changes radically from the initial Big Game Hunter direction, and then you can see the way words shift and morph between the framed-out version here and the final version.

He's damn right about the italics

Our language is indeed a living thing and must be operated more like a dance and less like a 1969 IBM Mag Card Selectric. I enjoy putting a space before and after an em-dash, like this — do you see? — because I feel it better communicates the feeling of the beat, fermata, or pause the dash is meant to create.

I admit that I love to use parentheses, I use them all the time. I refuse to look up the rules for using parentheses because after that, I would know that I'm using them incorrectly and it would take away all the love I have for them.

Sounds like you’re leaning that way

It’s best not to “look down,” …just let it flow. If I tried to examine how these little stories happen, I probably would never be able to do them again.

Chris Onstad

You and me both, pal. All I know is that he’s five, and this better not take long.

Chris Onstad

I can't even imagine where things begin and end when writing in a character's voice who is themself writing fiction. It's honestly really cool to see these notes and alternative takes from the process, I appreciate the look behind the curtain. Thanks, man.

Some kids are. Some kids maintain the ability to be weird and silly into adulthood even without drugs. Some other kids' parents drowned them in a bathtub full of meh and hmf and "that's nice, dear."

It's so impressive to me that all of the comics of Philippe writing stories are so consistent and of a whole and yet I can't explain at all how they work.

Chris Dubie

Aren’t kids good at making weird shit up on the fly? Because they haven’t yet been crushed with feedback from a mediocre populace?

Chris Onstad

It’s so hard to know what is an experimental comic strip and what isn’t

Meet his enemy, StrikeThrough Man

I didn’t even know I felt this way about italics but now I might be slightly against them

Chris Onstad

Also, is it weird that I’m not really jarred by Philippe writing stories about santería? Kid has unexpected depths.

Ben Sunshine-Hill

God damnit Onstad, what hope is there for any of us if you won’t speak truth to power about italics

Ben Sunshine-Hill

He was... Italics Man!

Stavro

"not good" stated the note after a piece of prose that was actually quite excellent. But then things got even better, and also weird.

I bless the permafrost in Africa

Does Philippe have an accidental grasp of absurdism and surrealism? Because his kid-brain ideas are so very dada and maybe it's his French blood coming out.
