Art Archives - Cornelius

You've probably read this before, but I had to teach myself how to draw the characters by hand in about 2008 (the strip launched in 2001), so I could sign books for the Great Outdoor Fight release tour. Drawing by hand has never been a forte, and is an anxious, mentally grueling activity for me—despite my awareness of erasers and other pieces of paper. This is why the canvases I actually produce to relax tend to just be, "crazy shit."

Enjoy these early studies of Cornelius Bear. I think all four are now owned by various readers.

That may have been the only time in my professional career I had a second thing to do

Chris Onstad

No, I was first person you signed for after someone came up and whispered in your ear that you had like 20 minutes left before you needed to leave for the next engagement. A welp of 19 at the time.

Morgan

man what the hell Jeff

Ah, the traditional Three Blessings meant to oversee any passage, super wise my dude

Chris Onstad

are you the guy who brought fancy coffee in a thermos and I made you take a sip first?

I bought an eBay copy of the first cookbook, which I already owned, because it contained a drawing of Beef in a huge toque and a dedication. I pretend to be Jeff and reminisce about the time I met you at a book signing. Oh, how we laughed!

I have a few 20teens-era Cocoa Buddies and they are amongst my most prized Arts. They currently sit in the entrance of my office, so I can gaze upon them for strength (Todd), wisdom (Connie), and comparatively good mental health (Beefy)

To answer as thoroughly as I can without an image - it's one of those little square paintings you'd share on the FB group. Cocoa Buddies? Some kinda moniker like that.

Hanging besides original doodles/autographs from Don Hertzfeldt and Bill Plympton.

I got to see you when you came to Seattle on the Great Outdoor Fight tour, and I always appreciated the unique Roast Beef drawing you made in like 30 seconds when you signed my book. I had no idea you weren't used to freehanding them!

Morgan

Cool, which piece? What is the old barleycorn doing.

Chris Onstad

I do indeed have an original Connie hanging over my bedroom doorway, albeit not any of the ones pictured here. Fun fact: Cornelius is the reason my first real scotch was Laphroaig. 🥃
