Should I post "lost" / rare old stuff in with all the new material?

Achewood has had many archives and appearances outside of the main site: WebComicsNation, Assetbar/Fanflow, and various incarnations of the Honor Club, to name but a few. Our Discord users have suggested it would be nice to see these things on the Patreon. I'm considering adding them, but only in addition to the original material you've already been promised, and only if it's the Will of the Community. Examples would be the big color stories from the Dark Horse magazines, the Beef & Molly Wedding Diaries from the fanflow, and the old chapbook sketchbooks. Proposed tier structure: Archival content would be available to Tiers 2 and 3. (In-universe archival content would post to Tiers 2 and 3, and out-of-universe content would post to Tier 3.) Thank you! And please share any additional thoughts below: I greatly value your personal input as this service takes shape!

I am sorry if this shows me as being a dude of strange cares

80s Guy

It would be good if there were upscaled versions of the vector art of some of the original strips I mean that would be awesome in the main

80s Guy

I’m late to the game but I demand I be counted as a “YES”

Kevin G

Yes, please also find and repost all of my most hilarious assetbar comments so they are preserved for posterity.

Ace

I think everyone here, including me, would love to see this content again. It'll be just like reading it new when I had more of my ability and hairs.

C C

You're the best!

Chris Lawson

It is hard to describe what an utterly leviathan curation effort this would be. That's what the anthologies were meant to be, and those had a team working for a full year to compile and verify each individual volume. (At least, until the publisher folded.) I may get up the blood to try that whole process again, but for now, it's too soon. Thanks!

Chris Onstad

Thanks for pointing this out! Yes, I have that list of gaps, and will figure this out.

Chris Onstad

Stop the count!!!

The Good Poster

If you vote no you've proved yourself a coward who would desert a dying man.

denv_eric

Man, I'd pay a buck a month just for you to wave a jpeg at me that said "Beef!" on it, just as thanks for years of great content. Now you're offering bonus material? Yes, I am very ok with this.

Christian LeBlanc

bird

Not sure if this is the right venue for this, but I'd love it if you posted the missing stuff from the latest honour club.

Chris Lawson

It's OK to hype the crowd! We're ready for it. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Evan Prodromou

I thought the whole point of me patronizing Achewood was to prevent people from reading it. What a fool I have been!

Pietro Portafoglio

Found it: file dated 9/12/2008, "three Philippes." He is drawn with hairstyles of Bruce Willis, Frank Hardy, and JFK (sneezing).

Chris Onstad

hm do i want More Things or Less Things

Guilherme Töws

I feel u on that one

Alexander Rediger

Seems like a slam dunk, man

Ray @SirEviscerate

Cues like this will help me track it all down, thank you

Chris Onstad

asset bar at some point, I think.. I was living in Vancouver then, so around 2011 - 2012? Might not have been JFK but definitely one of the Kennedys

Mark Thom

I had to look up who Rich Evans was in order to reply but I have already forgotten

Chris Onstad

oh man, where was this

Chris Onstad

Ray and Philippe meet Rich Evans (sequel to the Mark Twain arc??)

Keith Richards

I think we're all just glad you're back Chris ❤️

This poll is neck to neck

Christopher Robinson

I am happy to read any content related to classic/canon material! However you see it making sense, especially as long as you foreground the new stuff, which you already said you’d do anyway. Also, I don’t know where else to ask this, but maybe it is relevant here - but whatever happened w Cornelius and Polly? Did they stay together a while? I gathered from the blogs that Teodor and Penny didn’t seems to last. Maybe I missed archival material or my super-nerd cred isn’t as strong as others. Anyway thanks!

Matt Mitchell

Thanks Russell! The challenge with an all-at-once drop is that gathering and organizing the material all at once would take years of work, and would result in a drop of thousands of individual items that wouldn’t structurally work on this platform. This would also mean nobody could see the archival for several more years, and keeping the resources up to run a secondary project like that in the background all that time is a big risk (Oni Press had a diehard editor/fan gathering and curating archival stuff for two years, just for the first of four planned volumes.) Releasing higher-quality items in self-contained installments on a regular basis is how I see this working best. But I do appreciate your suggestion, and I too am most excited to be producing the weekly new strip and in-universe character pieces!

Chris Onstad

I'd love an archive of old/lost stuff that I can choose not to look at if I don't want to. As others have said, the best case scenario would be to post it all at once rather than trickle it out. What I'm excited about, and excitedly paying for, is a weekly Achewood strip in continuity.

RBM

I have spent literal years pining for the lost Fanflow stories (Krebel Sac, Sushi Lunch, Home Depot Trip, etc.) so if you think I am afraid of this idea then you are a madman.

Nicholas Williams

(1) I have been to Milwaukee several times, my partner is from Milwaukee, and I have met/partied with many of her extended circle. I would say that only about 38% of them know how to party, and even that is kind of in a 90s way. (2) Yes, it seems obvious in retrospect, but I didn't want to piss anybody off with some ill-considered unilateral decision that has significant downstream effects. We got to make this a conversation, man!

Chris Onstad

This is shameless crowd pandering. "We were wondering up here if anyone in MILWAUKEE knows how to PARTY"

Evan Prodromou

This is definitely going to be "Off-Broadway" stuff.

Walter Cooke

YES, I want to see Phillipe sneezing as JFK again

Mark Thom

Was too poor for that stuff back then and now I'm not! Please!!

Simone Wu

please dump the old stuff all at once instead of trickling

Evan Applegate

This poll will not provide the requisite controversy to tear us all apart, no. Perhaps I need to have a poll about E—n M—k

Chris Onstad

looks like it's gonna be close

Jason Pargin

As someone who missed Achewood in its heyday, I'd love to see it.

Silver Smoulder

Now you’re just pulling everyone’s legs

Chris Onstad

Nice Pete deleted scenes?

+confused butterfly ballot noises*

GruntyGinMan

Triple-bonus gratitude if you're a bad enough hombre to somehow find the old Myspace blogs

Lonesome Cowpoke

It is my will

Ismini Roller

i am not afraid of this.

rap legend Jesse Dangerously

That too but I never thought to monetize it

Jordan

I'm not even in the tiers that would get that stuff but obviously you should do it

Kate Gragg

lol "broke back" (i am also part gay)

rap legend Jesse Dangerously

Thanks Ryan and Jeremy, you have warmed an Old cho's heart.

Gryffyd Dempsey

I've been wanting the Assetbar archive for years, so my "yes" is actually a "yes and I'd even pay MORE for it..."

Jarret Cooper

I am also an Old and Discord confuses and terrifies me. Would it kill them to make conversations thread, like wtf, nobody wants to stand in a virtual room of knuckleheads just yelling at each other.

Libbie Hawker

It's like those folks who eat the plate sandwich but don't eat the french fries. Like they just leave the whole pile behind

Yelahneb Unicornucopiax

It would not take away from new material! I’ve tried to make it clear in the (admittedly tl;dr) paragraph above that this archival material would only be in addition to the planned new content. I’m excited to be writing the new pieces!

Chris Onstad

On the Patreon website, click Settings > More > Connected Apps, then the Connect button next to Discord. You should only have to do it once, and then you'll automatically get access whenever you sign up for a patreon that includes discord rewards.

Jeremy Laukkonen

I was broke back in the day so I never got to see any of the old "premium" stuff, I would love to see it here

Jordan

go to your account settings, and select "connected apps" (might be under a "more" dropdown). once you connect your discord account with patreon, it should automatically throw you into the discord server with whatever patreon roles and benefits you pay for

GnomeSane

I don’t think I could have too much ephemera.

Omurice

If you post rare/old/lost stuff would it take away from new stuff? Because if not, you're basically asking "Do you want 1 cool thing or 2 cool things?"

fancymatt

People who voted "no": what do you think you're running from? The disease is inside of you.

Moira's Machine

I could definitely do this! One worry is overwhelming subscribers with stuff, like The New Yorker does (who here has a 1' tall stack of those that they just ultimately felt bad about never being able to catch up with)

Chris Onstad

I’d also like to do lists, scraps of paper with notes to yourself that you don’t remember writing, and my personal favorite, Post it’s that say things like “page 43!” but you no longer remember what you were reading. Also menus.

Omurice

Can someone with more technology-awareness please help this chochacho? I had Patreon walk me through the process, or I would never have figured it out myself (I am an old and used-up man, no hope, no more learning possible)

Chris Onstad

Nostalgia, really- they’re certainly not necessary for the “canon”, but we sure had us a hell of a good time with all of the back and forth banter. It just added to the total flavor. However, I’m not technically inclined, and that may just be too much of an undertaking to accomplish. Honestly, I’d be grateful for anything at all from the fanflow- I’ve been relying on a pdf of screenshots that I carefully saved from beginning to end just before it went down. I have to read it in a weird, scroll from the bottom but read from the top of each page way to get the chronology right, but I catch something new every time I re-read it. “Oh how it is fine. Oh how it does sate”, if I may quote Nice Pete.

Jay Williams

That's a great thing for me to clarify -- thanks William! Where it says, in the author's tier description of content, "Achewood Stories & News, Past & Present," I meant me writing new pieces about the history of Achewood, not me reposting archival Achewood stuff. My overwhelming intention with Patreon is the development of new Achewood material; the archival stuff would just be some salt and pepper. I appreciate the opportunity to clarify this!

Chris Onstad

Dumb question here, but how does one access the Discord benefits that come with the Achewood Patreon membership?

Gryffyd Dempsey

practically drooling at the prospect

Amy Lewis

I'd love a chance to read those. I missed them the first time around.

Vijnananath

Isn’t this the promise of the Author’s tier?

William Kennedy

“No don’t post that stuff” doesn’t seem like a realistic answer from anyone

Steve McGuigan

It will be considerable work to reconstruct the fanflow/assetbar, as the original archive was lost, but if there is enough demand, we can probably get close. Why would you like the user comments, particularly?

Chris Onstad

The dark horse stories rule.

A Knight From A Fairytale

It's about time to reissue the Philippe / Homosexuals 2024 bumper sticker collection

J Hardy Carroll

Figured I’d see you here!

A. Hamster

Any chance this would include the fanflow (and, hopefully, the comments thereto), or is all that lost to the ages? [Edit- just read the full question, which included the fanflow. Next time I’ll read the instructions!!]

Jay Williams

It would be awesome to finally read Nate Small!

A. Hamster

Yeah, I'm in for everyone having that stuff, if it's practical to do so. Either way, I'd like to see it preserved and just to be able to see it myself at long last.

Vijnananath

A good point, and worth considering. Thank you, Bungus!

Chris Onstad

The only possible reason I could think of for voting “no” is because everyone should have access to that stuff, not just patreon subscribers. That said, yes.

Bungus Bronbo

Well, that'd tip me over into Tier 2...

Andy Jennings

I’ll take it all. Fill this puppy up!

Jonathan Kamenetz

Anyone who votes no is the biggest of fools
