OK. help me with the discord server
Added 2022-01-24 03:10:28 +0000 UTCi know i basically already made this post but i am actually going thru the motions of setting things up right now so i need more specific guidance! i have never been in a patreon discord server before so i don't know how they are typically set up. here are the channels i currently have, none of which are set in stone:
- introductions
- rules/FAQ
- general
- mondayposting (for me to post WIPs, updates etc)
- art you made (for other people to post their work)
- VIG (for $25 patrons)
then i've got two voice channels, one for streaming and one for just hanging out. does this resemble anything you're familiar with..? is this appropriate? let me know what you think i should add or subtract from this, what kind of rules you think i ought to implement, etc. i am going into this totally blind.
i've heard there is a way to directly tie patreon tiers to discord roles so i'm gonna look into that, but i'm not sure how they ought to function-- like what kind of privileges they should come with. i figure the top tier patrons should have their own little zone, especially because my VIG patrons often combine their monthly drawing prompts. but i'd like to honor my $15 patrons as well, who as it stands don't get much in the way of benefits apart from a discount on adoptables, and i'd really like to change that. i am also conscious of making people feel left out tho and i want to foster an environment that is comfy, so i want my decisions to be informed by that as well.
i could really use the input of people who understand this better than i do! i'll be responding to replies here and reading everything you all have to say. i would like to do this properly!
as a side note, many of u may know i am on a bit of a social media hiatus rn due to mental health reasons and catastrophic life events, so i would like to move more of my internet presence to these private spaces instead of offering my whole self to the public constantly. it is exhausting to be in the public eye, even as a D-list furry artist, and i really cherish the company of the people who really support me, so even though i am posting a bit less, this feels important. things may be a little slow as i cobble my life together again but i want to do something cool for the people who have helped me stay afloat this past year. thank you all so much, i hope i can do right by this idea

A general and content share channel are pretty good foundational ones, and really more can always be added as you get a feel for what’s talked about in the server/the general interests of everyone. Really the only extra channels I’d suggest are music (cause sharing what you’re listening to is always nice) and a meta/administration channel for general server housekeeping

2022-01-27 13:40:04 +0000 UTCI'd be happy to help manage if you need an extra set of hands, I help run or directly run a ton of discord servers! :)
2022-01-27 05:55:57 +0000 UTCI've created a few small Discord servers and what I discovered is that the most successful ones build out naturally. When I've tried overthinking the channels they tend to go unused and overburden the sidebar. So like Kota mentioned, starting small could be good and as your patrons chat you might find reasons to make more channels, maybe even some that are tier locked. This could help negate neglect too because channels only get created when there are people looking to actively use them 😊 Also, sidenote: When people unsubscribe they aren't always taken off of the Discord. If you do tier locked channels there will be some manual user management required. I've contacted Patreon about it once before but they sadly chose not to fix the issue 😔
2022-01-24 06:58:23 +0000 UTCI think it would maybe be fun to have a channel for cat or other pet pictures if that seems like a nice thing :) a few of the servers I'm in have that and it's always fun and wholesome!

2022-01-24 06:58:05 +0000 UTCi totally see what u mean re: spaces for specific tiers . i am gonna take that into consideration bc i could see things getting stratified and funky. i just worry abt not providing people with enough rewards for their contributions, but maybe that's the sort of thing that doesn't need to be a part of this server. i think ur right about keeping chats to a minimum bc in my experience being a part of normal discord servers, most of the channels sit unused anyway. thank you for sharing ur thoughts, this helps inform my choices going forward!!

2022-01-24 05:17:02 +0000 UTCwhat you’ve got going is great imo! my only suggestion would be to think up a handful of those rules you’d like upheld between peeps, which most servers have- just the general don’t be an asshole stuff, but maybe sprinkled in with your own touches? That, and while I see the effort with making a little cubbyhole for the highest tier(s), in my experience either one or the other gets neglected and people don’t end up using it. I personally think one or two chats maximum, viewable and interactable between all tiers would probably end up working better for everyone, I doubt anyone would really have a problem with it. If you really wanted to separate the tiers on discord into neat little rows, roles are always an option: which the patreon integration interacts with already, so once you figure that out it’ll be more streamlined. I think that’s it? U will do fine yes yes
