thinking abt a discord server

for 2022 i'd like to do more streaming . and i think the optimal way to do that is probably through discord, bc twitch is public and i want it to be more exclusive when i do it for patrons! so i am rotating the idea of a patreon-exclusive server in my mind. i am trying to diversify the way i interact with my audience, especially the people who care enough to support me here, and i get up to all kinds of weird art shit that never otherwise makes it to the internet. so why not let you be privy to it?? you could watch me work on the vtube avatar , or i could set it up so that a webcam allows u to see me make the dolls im working on, or we could just do normal streams where i draw comics and adopts. i think this sounds fun and interesting and would allow me to work on a more structured schedule

i have sort of dismissed this idea for a long time now because of the moderation and such required.. i don't really know how to handle that. i am not equipped to mod a whole server, even a small one, especially if it's full of people who are helping me pay my bills lol. i know i wouldn't have the balls to resolve conflicts in such an arena. if anyone has tips for managing something like this please let me know, and if this is something you're interested in seeing, let me know as well!

I'm a little late on this but a discord server sounds like a safe option. Plus I think it's easier to manage discord over twitch.

augh i deleted my own comment by accident im going to cry. you might get these in your email but im just going to type it again... having run a lot of discord servers and seeing what artists are doing for a lot of them - 1. i'll admit i have a preference for smaller servers, 3-4 focused channels rather than fragmenting everyone across a bunch of channels. this seems to work well for a lot of artist servers i have seen. its always a bummer to see a server with 30+ channels that each might get posted into less than once a day, and a general channel that is flooded 2. +1 on hecka's advice, you always want to get rid of shitheads (esp if they aren't on your patreon/paying you) before they become a longer term problem. avoid people who toe the line or post a lot of double-meaning content. it'll your space and you deserve to feel safe and comfy in it see if you can get some friends to help with moderating. if you need more, i would consider volunteering :P good luck and i'll for sure join when it happens!

this is really really helpful.... i appreciate detailed insight like this. if you have other useful information you'd like to share please feel free! rn im trying to make decisions about channels and roles but i definitely want this thing to happen in the next couple weeks, the positive response is super heartening

to keep experience brief, I've spent the past 10 years more than eyeballs deep in community management in the kind of art sphere you'll meet if you make a discord. A few tips to get you pointed in the right direction. - it's absolutely a great idea and could prove to gain a lot more interest in commissions and exclusive content. I'd say go for it! - PLEASE do not be afraid to moderate. Make your rules clear, lead by example, you really shouldn't see trouble. Most people know their five bucks is on the line and won't do anything out of the ordinary. As things progress, I'm sure you'll begin to learn who of your regulars are happy to help and can grant them some limited power to quell random late night issues. - If you have content sharing channels ("art you found", memes, etc), cultivate your brand by driving the conversations there. It sounds like a no-brainer, but this is proactive moderation- people will learn to read the room and contribute content that you feel is appropriate for -your audience-. The last thing you want is someone regularly making people uncomfortable with offcolor conversation, or a 12gb folder full of facebook mom minion memes they really wanna share this afternoon. You'd be surprised how often this flies under the radar - again, this is a wonderful way to host events like private streaming, asking the community for quick feedback, impromptu events and sales, and so on. Seeing there's a discord integration is really exciting, it's full of interesting mystery benefits people could never get from looking at twitter or patreon's feed best of luck!

I would love this so much! chillen while watching monday do silly little drawings or crafts sounds radically cozy... and hanging out with all the monday patrons on a discord?? i'm sold

I think a Patron-only discord would be pretty neat, yeah! I am in one which only effectively has two staff and it goes *mostly* alright but we're also lucky that the two staff members are very on the ball, and the members within are very cooperative. I also moderate a (different) public server with 12.3k members in it, but am only adept with the people & rules aspect - less so bots management. Whatever the case, I do look forward to seeing how this goes!

Could be hard finding mods if you want it to be patreon only, but it looks like a good few people here have experience in it. I do too and moderate another small patreon server, honestly a large part of it working imo is just having a clear set of rules for them to follow. Could get examples of a bunch I've found work well if it helps?

Really Good Cake

Heya, I moderate a Discord server for a site and sport a good 300 or so members? About two-three dozen active posters I think. We have one paid community manager, six or so community mods, and staff from our main Website serve as defacto mods under the community manager. Not all of us are active either. If you need specifics on how we resolve conflicts or how we recruited mods, feel free to send me a DM. I'll agree with J.Grillo tho, locking the server behind Patreon does wonders. People tend to behave and are much more sincere when they're paying to join a server. Also, since, people who are patrons tend to be over the age 18, there's a measure of maturity that helps keep drama low. But don't get me wrong, sometimes you do have to kick people out for being gross or something, and you'll probably lose a patron over it, but there's always ways to keep things even handed.

that'd be great ! i would love a bit of modding advice. i figure i will probably end up doing it myself, at least for the short-term, and the last time i did any sort of mod activity it was on an imageboard many years ago lol

i love this idea! my partner is a mod on a large discord server so I can ask her for advice on moderating and/or finding mods if you'd like!

fenn

Very interested!!! Happy to chat moderating from personal experience (I’m not a mod myself but have been in similar Discords)

Having the audience limited to your Patreon group sounds like a good idea too… hopefully that would weed out the level of nasty.
