Lexi’s play, while showing her memories and portraying everyone (Rue, Cassie, Maddie), simultaneously holds up a mirror to them (and Nate) forcing them to see who they’ve become. Also, Lexi (she could’ve easily painted Cassie as bad) didn’t expose Cassie, but portrayed her as a beautiful (maybe a little ditzy), good friend and sister that she constantly lived in the shadow of and someone she looked up to. Rue read the script, so I guess she let her include her drug addiction, her father being dead (..and the memorial..?). And Cassie is about to do something because Nate broke up with her.
Also, you see the transitions between Lexi’s memories (Rue, Cassie, Maddie, her mom, etc;) to the play (Jade, Hallie, Marta, etc;). But there’s also a transition between what Lexi is imagining the play to be, and reality. At the start, the stage crew awkwardly carries in letters (spelling out “Our Life”), and Lexi says “It’s not everyone’s life, it’s Our Life,” then awkward silence and scattered applause.. Not to mention they literally dropped the R. This is what you’d expect of a high school play, but, seconds later we’ve got spinning stages and Broadway level sets recreating bedrooms and houses that are unrealistic for a high school (This is what Lexi thinks. It went from shitty to CRAZY impressive like a bunch of times). Lexi puts on a tangled, party city type of wig backstage and comes out with a gorgeous hairdo, amazing makeup… There’s also a DIRECT indicator the play was also mixing with Lexi’s imagination, when Ethan says (on stage) “I wish I had boned Lexi Howard”, after she introduced herself as Grace. Her imagination was mixing with how we viewed the play.

One Ep left, what are they replacing it with? I guess Knights of Seven Kingdoms for more of that GoT world?

Yeah the play is about her friends, but can we talk about how BRAVE Lexi is to expose herself and her thoughts to an audience full of people this way. It's honestly amazing and I could NEVER do that in high school... honestly don't think I could even do that now.

While I know Lexi's play is a tribute to her and her friends overall, it has always felt like a love letter to her friend Rue most of all. Not in a romantic sense obviously. But in a true love sense all the same. Its like...Lexi can see Rue through all the darkness. She understands that she is still there. Underneath all the sorrow and self destruction. That she understands her. Accepts her. Loves her anyway. She has observed her. Witnessed her. And loves her anyway. Her best friend. And when you think about Lexi's anxiety over how people will interpret her intention, Rue, of all of them, seems to understand it and her the most clearly. Never offended and not watching it from the lens of her ego. Actually taking in what her friend has to say about her experience alongside her friends. Allowing Lexi to hold the mirror up. It is like they are seeing each other only as the truest best friends can. I think it is funny and a spectacle and all. But it is truly so fucking sweet and kind in its own way too.
