I'd definitely recommend reading the series if you're diving into fanfic because a LOT pull from The Long Game which is the (current) final book.

Great reaction! One of the reasons I love this show is because of how natural the two leads are with each other. I have seen other love interests who kiss each other and it just doesn’t “feel” right, or convincing maybe is the right word(?). I don’t know, but there is something more than that chemistry (which they have in spades), it is the perfect casting of these two together, along with the writing, directing, cinematography etc. And it could just be the simple fact that it was possibly the care everyone put into it to keep it to what the vision was and not allow anything to derail it. Thank goodness it was all out of Hollywood’s hands or we would not have had what you see today-I really believe that.
Anywho, I am part way through the first book and can’t wait to read the rest. I did wait until I watched the series but that was because I watched it all in one day 😂. I have no will power at all, so kudos to you, I probably would’ve just recorded them all in one. 😂
Also, I think these episodes are the kind you will notice more on a rewatch since you can really focus and not have to comment.
Until next time!

I think you could read book 1 but it sounds like you might have read that one as a fanfic lmao (yes that was a stucky fic) book 2 is season 1, and the show is very very true to the book soooo you would definitely be spoiled for the show. I think your reactions would be more fun without prior knowledge but you wouldn't be the first person to watch the show after reading the book.
Also unfortunately you are right about the fandom being toxic :') lmaooo the downside of a show blowing up so damn quick.
PS: idk if you have watched all their interviews yet but if you haven't, that could definitely be some fun bonus reactions if you are jonesing for another fix after watching the show!

Shane and Ilya actually weren't hooking at up at all outside of what we were shown!
When it comes to the books, I don't think it's a problem if you read the books, but there's only 3 that center on Shane and Ilya so if you want to avoid those until you're done with the season that's possible:
- Books 1, 3, 4, and 5 are about other couples but I think Ilya at least plays a minor role in them
- Books 2, 6 and the 7th which is coming in September are about Shane and Ilya

I think it would be fine if you watch the first season without having read the books, but then read the books before the next season comes out.
That's what I did.
I'm currently on book five of the series and I think it would be really cool for you to be able to talk about it. Also since you wanna jump into the fandom you'll see some spoilers here and there anyways.
I do recommend reading all the books and reading them in order. Considering the books are about different couples and only Shane & Ilya have multiple books, it is not strictly necessary, but having the context of the other people and some connecting things is fun. Also some of the other stories are great as well.

Giggely is fine. I think a lot of us were giggely and can relate.
Yeah, it's not a slowburn for us, but it is for them... in a way at least.
Yes it's supposed to be the first hookup since their rookie season. I'm pretty sure it was different in the book (it's only been a few weeks since I read it, but I'm still not 100% sure of that). I don't want to spoil the book, so I'm not gonna say that much, but it is similar in regards of passing time, but the basis is different.
I do like the first two episodes, but I think they are a lot/even better in the context of the whole show. So rewatching after having watched all eps is highly recommended ;)

please read the books after you finish this season.
