Also, unrelated to my previous comment, but regarding Red Meat. This is one of those episodes that is actually out of order from where it was supposed to be. Red Meat was originally meant to come after Hell's Angel instead of before it, so part of Dean's whole mindset in Red Meat is thinking that Cas is gone, or at least out of reach. Doesn't justify his rashness, lol, but it does help explain why he is so quick to jump to that particular decision making process

I really love that we get this particular episode in season 11. To me, this season has always been sort of the "reset" season for the boys. From essentially the end of season 2, when Dean makes his deal, through everything that happened with Ruby and Lilith, the Apocalypse, Sam's soullessness, Cas' betrayal, the leviathan and Sam's psychosis, the trials, Gadreel, the Mark of Cain and Dean being a demon, the boys have always, in some sort of way, been out of balance, out of sync, or even just at each other's throats. But with Sam getting the Mark of Cain off of Dean, and Dean's new perspective on what it means to be infected with something dark, to fight against a part of yourself that is demonic and evil, and cross that line, I genuinely feel like season 11 is a breath of fresh air. For the first time in seasons, it seems like Dean and Sam are really, fully on the same page, equal partners in everything they do. Of course, there is still the big brother/little brother dynamic that we all love, but not when it comes to the important things. The boys are communicating, they are sharing with each other, and making decisions together. Even when they don't, they tell the other about the decisions they make (for the most part. They are still Winchesters of course, so some white lies are to be expected). It feels like the relationship we saw in season 1, healthy and happy and whole, with all of the benefits of the lessons they have learned over the years, making it that much stronger. And I think this is the perfect episode to showcase that sort of growth. Bobby and Rufus are really the only other hunting pair we get to know. We have seen some before, but usually only one off characters. But Bobby and Rufus are really the bar we set for experienced, practiced hunters, and even though they are both gone now, using their characters this way beautifully demonstrates just how far Dean and Sam have come, and how well they have developed as a hunting team. It shows the younger generation carrying on the legacy of hunting, and how much has stayed the same, and how much has changed. The circle of hunting, carrying on from one generation, to the next, and showing how the new generation is doing better than those that came before them (finding how to end the Soul Eater vs just trapping it as Bobby did.) Sam and Dean being capable enough to improve of the work of their predecessors really shows these boys have come into their own, and it is just a really beautiful episode that puts aside, momentarily, the apocalypses and fights and betrayals and secrets, and shows unity and growth and positive change for all the boys
