Also, unrelated to my other post, but the makeup department this episode deserves a shout out! Sam looks like a complete mess lol. You can see not only the bruises and cuts from Dean, but also the pale skin, the exhausted lines, the sickly complexion... they did a fantastic job of showing us the amount of strain weighing on Sam after having to deal with the Mark of Cain for so long. It reminds me of the way Sam looked during the trials- dead on his feet, ill, exhausted, just utterly overwhelmed, physically. Even before he gets infected

Finally, season 11! I absolutely adore this season, it is my all time favorite. Some of the bets episodes of the entire series, some of the best writing and acting... this season is just fire, in my opinion. I feel like the consequence of killing Death is more subtle than, say, what happened with Lilith's death, for example. The impact isn't something massive and explosive and in your face. I feel like it is more like a shift of power, of balance. As one ancient, cosmic force fades, a new one arrives, aka Amara. It isn't really the end of Death, since Death isn't ever really final, but it opens the door to a new balance of cosmic power with Amara coming into the picture. Billie might take up the mantle and job of Death, but I feel like Amara is the real replacement for that force in the universe, and Death himself had sort of been a placeholder while she had been locked away. I do appreciate Sam's attitude this season. After all the mistakes both he, and Dean, have made, this is their fresh start, a chance to change their ways and be better, do better. I also really love that this season starts off the trend of really showcasing Sam's growth as a character, his strength, his resilience and his bravery. This isn't the kid who had visions, or who drank demon blood, or who tried to close Hell. This is a fully realized Winchester, trying his best to be good in a world literally designed to torment him. And I love the parallels of that especially in these first two episodes. Sam, infected with something dark, something beyond his power... but he doesn't give up or give into it, he fights to find a cure. To fix things and set them right. And I love that Dean shows his own growth as well, because this is really where we finally get to see both brothers on the same page, finally working as full, unequivocal equals. No one brother in charge, no demon blood or mark of cain, no soullessness or demonness, no trials or hallucinations... just brothers working together. And seeing Dean give Sam his trust, his faith, is really, really refreshing to see. Both brothers are responsible for releasing Amara. Sam organized the team that did the spell to break the curse, and Dean took on the mark in the first place, with no regard for the consequences of what that might mean. Of course, I firmly believe that it is ultimately a net positive that Amara is released, and Sam is the catalyst for that, but I feel like for the first time since season 1, there is a true unity between the boys. An even stronger sense of it, actually, because they now have all the knowledge and experience of the last decade. If I had to pick a winner for this episode I would definitely say it should go to Sam. He is the one who makes Dean stop and take stock, to realize they need to start changing their behavior. He is also the one who comes up with the plan to try to save as many people as they can, and gets Dean, Jenna and baby Amara out of the hospital safely. As for your question on if they changed, I really think they do. They try to find more solutions than just killing. Hell, Dean himself ends this season not by taking out Amara, but by talking her off the ledge. They try to save more possessed people, except when their lives are immediately threatened. They start to look bigger picture (aka Sam next season, seeing the potential of what the BMOL could have been), and there is definitely a switch between the brothers. They become more cohesive, more understanding. Dean draws on Sam's strengths, and Sam draws on Dean's. They don't obviously fix everything over night, but I at least definitely feel a sharp change in how the Winchesters hunt from this season on
