I know I am coming a long ways after you all are watching, but I will say that Targs and Incest are not the same way even Westeros is, which is also much more accepting than we are. The closer you are to a dragonriding bloodline, the closer you are to being able to ride a dragon. So, the Tagaryen's intermarrying is actually almost crucial to their power in Westeros, as after only a few generations, they would lose all power entirely. It wasn't as big a deal in Old Valyria, as all the dragonriding families would have married in the same way that the Targs did, but since the Doom, only the Targs remain dragonriders. Over the last hundred+ years since Aegon's conquest, and around a hundred and fifty years since the Doom, only Viserys had any children that would potentially sit the throne that wasn't pure Targ, so Daemon is actually a much better option. The most preferable Targ option would have been Rhaenyra and Aegon as it silences any claims about succession, and secures their bloodline (at least books, Rhaenyra is only 11 yers older than Aegon and would still be able to have kids for a while after marrying age for Aegon, which is fourteen in Westeros). The second best would be Daemon (if he was unmarried) and Rhaenyra, and the third is Laenor and Rhaenyra (as both at least are Valyrian). Un/Fortunately, Valyrian blood, while somehow seemingly resilient to inbreeding, does have a madness effect, where the more inbred you are, the more likely you are to go insane, which is where you get the whole "gods flip a coin" thing.
