Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban | Watch Along

"If I could turn back time..." Was that an over-Cher? 😅

Stuart Brewster

So are we doing a Hogwarts Legacy playthrough after the movies 😀

I used to have a time turner when I was a kid. My mum had a subscription to some harry potter magazine that sent pieces to build the chess set from the first movie, as well as other things from the movies. The chess set pieces would break apart when taken out by other pieces, and it came with a wand with a magnet in it that you used to push the pieces around the board.

I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, but small correction to Arianna: the rest of the films are not by this director. Alfonso Cuarón literally only did this film, which is why it's so different in tone than the others. Sorcerer's Stone & Chamber of Secrets were done by Columbus. Azkaban was done by Cuarón, Mike Newell directed Goblet of Fire, and David Yates did all the rest.

Also really glad Arianna explains about Harry's father and his friends. None of the movies explain it. Can't wait for them to watch 4.

Just realized that young Malfoy and young Joffrey are cut from the same cloth.

Let's go!!!

This film was directed by Alfonso Cuaron, one of the greatest film makers ever. You guys should check out some of his work.

All in all, I like a lot of the big directorial decisions that were made in this movie, the cinematography, the acting, all top-notch for a standalone film. But I feel like this is the movie where a lot of the small characterizations and background lore and aesthetic really started to drift from the books in an unhelpful way. One thing that always strikes me is that this is the movie where they really made Ron into the doofus that he'd be for the rest of the series and made Hermione a bit too perfect. In the books, the conflict about Scabbers and Crookshanks is huge, it's like a real, emotional conflict that leads to a temporary end of Hermione and Ron's friendship, it's a big deal, and to be frank, Hermione is pretty much in the wrong in that argument. Because she insists Crookshanks didn't hurt Scabbers when that is simply the most reasonable explanation as to why he's gone and Hermione refuses to take responsibility for it or even admit it. In the conflict between Ron and Hermione, this book is Hermione's time to be wrong, and without spoiling anything much, the next book is Ron's turn to be wrong; but they made this Crookshanks/Scabbers conflict in the movies pretty small and insignifact, while they really elevate the conflict in movie 4, so Ron seems even more unreasonable. Also taking away the "you'll have to kill us first" line from Ron and giving it to Hermione, having Ron pile on when Snape calls her a know-it-all instead of defending her like he does in the books, and just generally coming across as more inept and dumb than he ever does in the books, just for a bit of comic relief. It's really kind of tragic what they did to Ron.

One of the things I always notice when rewatching this movie is how good Michael Gambon is in this one as Dumbledore. I think people really loved Richard Harris in the first two movies and weren't ready yet for this new Dumbledore when Prisoner came out, and then Mike Newell completely threw out the books in film 4 and made Dumbledore into the angry guy that most people remember Gambon from. But in this first iteration of new Dumbledore under Cuarón, I think he really works. He has more of that calm power that I associate with Dumbledore but he also has a bit of the goofiness that we see in the books, while Harris always seemed a bit too frail to me, especially in that second movie, because of his age.

Christophe

Damn right best run of the series both book and movie, 5 being the most important I would say

Xavier Chandler

yeah its interesting because I feel like 5 and 6 are the least talked about, especially when it comes to the movies, but both 5 and 6 are easily my favorite of the books and movies.

As someone who is in their mid 30s and missed the hype around Harry Potter when I was much younger and only recently decided to read the books and watch the movies, Arianna needs to do no apologizing for saying this is everyone's every story in the series. It really hits that sweet spot in between childish wonder the first two entries have and the seriousness the rest of the series continues with. Everything still feels so magical and we are still learning who Harry is going to become, and what the world around him is all about. We also get to learn how dangerous and grey this world actually is as opposed to how black and white we were led to believe it was.

been waiting for more of these so i can binge these :)

Jorge Inho

the best directed of the series. From the moment of the hippogriff "execution" it's literally not stop. Excellent pacing.

Taylor Stuckey

There's a lot of great new leitmotifs, like the Marauders leitmotif that's most prominent when Lupin talks to Harry on the bridge about Lily. It's so beautiful. I also love the Buckbeak theme, it's so majestic. And while I know that the Knight Bus scene isn't most people's favorite because it's pretty goofy, the music in it is also brilliant, John Williams really showing off his jazz background in that one.

Christophe

I feel like the music went extra hard in this one. There's so many unique songs to great scenes.

Joshua Luzania

for me, the 4,5,6 stretch is my favorite for these movies. i havent read the books in forever. i know for the books i loved 2,5,6 and 7 most. But for the movies its chamber of secrets and this next little wave youre about to come up on

Nigel Douglas

i wonder if ridiculus works on regular people lmao cuz the bullying would get out of hand quickly

Nigel Douglas

And the the unexpected HAYMAKER stuns the crowd 🤯
