The writers started to get inspired by the actress playing Shae, who had way more gravitas than the character written in the books... and tremendous chemistry w/ Peter Dinklage. So they started writing Shae to play to the actress's strengths. But when it came down to this moment, they didn't do the proper setup to make us believe that THIS version of Shae would betray Tyrion. Feels like a few scenes are missing.

Jamie and Tyrion are and have always been close. He has love in his family from Jamie- he also loves and is close with Tommen and Myrcella.

Well it's because it's a remnant of the Shae storyline from the books where it makes more sense. Essentially, Shae never really loved Tyrion in the books, she just pretended and it was always obvious that she was just in it for the wealth and comfortable lifestyle. Which is the real reason she got grumpy working as a maid. And why she had no issues "betraying" him. Tyrion kinda sorta wanted to be fooled and emotionally he was and therefore felt betrayed, but intellectually he knew throughout that Shae didn't really love him.
I get why they changed that in the show, it makes Shae into a more well-rounded and interesting character and arguably makes their relationship more interesting because it's not only about Tyrion's character but also about Shae's. But yeah, it kind of falls apart at the end here.

This is why out of all the excellent actors on Game of Thrones, Peter Dinklage's is the only one that won both a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his performances (many other were nom'd but nobody else won).
And he's one of the only Americans in the main cast; not bad for a dude from New Jersey surrounded by classically trained thespians!

Shae's betrayal has never made much sense to me. 90% of her character is her being in love with Tyrion and unbothered by the threat of death. They turn her into a cowardly moron by making her believe Tyrions super obvious attempt to get rid of her for her own safety and then betray the entire core of her character with this episode. Bizarre.
People try to explain it away with 'she did it for her own survival' nonsense. If that had ever been a concern for her, the show should have shown that lmao. Instead, it showed the exact opposite constantly. Great episode otherwise, but the show definitely forces her betrayal

To borrow a phrase from another review, Dinklage really kicked that scene in the dick

That moment where Tyrion sees that Shae is about to betray him, and says "please don't"--is one of the most powerful moments of this show-- its that kind of quiet intensity that's louder than shouting.
Also, a shout out to Tywin playing the super long game!! he set the whole fucking thing up just to force Jaime to quit the Kingsguard and be his heir.

Tyrion's speech at his trial has to be top 3 scenes in the entire show, what an insane actor that Peter Dinklage is. Can't wait for the season finale reaction.
