I think they convey this better in the books, but without Robb in camp, and Jaime trying to escape while Robb was gone, Jaime was going to be killed that night by drunken Karstarks - so Cat made a move to get some use out of him and saved his life. Absolutely, she betrayed Robb and the North by letting him go, but he would have been dead by morning (and Karstark would have had vengeance)
