Better Call Saul 2x5

I completely forgot about the line "How about the old Carol Burnett thing?". So wild that she's a fan and what a wonderful easter egg.

I want these ladies to be happy, comfortable, and well taken care of.

So, we want the hosts to get some decent freaking chair seating accommodations. I'm talking home theater seats btw, we can throw some green sheets over them if we have to.

I don't know, I see your point but in this instance, I just don't see that maliciousness and manipulation in him. He has plenty of that in him and we will get to see it but in this conversation with Kim, I think he just wanted to explain his point of view and honestly try and explain why he thinks Jimmy did what he did. Part of it probably is to try and explain himself because he'll know that Kim won't have heard many good things about him from Jimmy and he obviously knows that Jimmy blames Chuck on Kim's situation, so yeah, it's probably a bit of a selfish way to explain how he's not the bad guy in all this, that this is just what Jimmy does. I think we probably agree that the conversation achieves much the same, I just don't see quite as malicious of a motivation behind it, even if it is subconsciously manipulative on his part. I just think it's "manipulative" in the same way we all kind of are when we get defensive and try and shift some blame away from us. We don't do it because we're evil, we just want to explain our point of view.

The pre-credit sequence in this one struck me. It's almost as if the Davis & Main commercial was done explicitly as a "fuck you" to Jimmy. It's one thing to just repeat the ad in their own style, that's expected. But style or no, the genius of Jimmy's is that he specifically placed the ad on a TV show he knew that the seniors would be watching in the afternoon. Davis & Main do an ad buy that airs their version in the middle of the night when no one will be watching, least of all their targeted customers. As Omar said, they had spent weeks arguing over the muted colors and the "swirly effect" in the background, but where to place the ad was given no thought whatsoever.

i disagree. there's no need for the story about Jimmy if he just wants to tell her shes a good attorney and he will put in a good word to Howard. And if its what best for the firm, chuck could have just convinced Howard "hey much more of this and she might quit", and he wouldn't have still been so upset about moving her from doc review next episode. it seems like chuck made him move her back after this conversation, to show that he can help her, while jimmy hurts her career.

I in no means "like" Chuck, I just think too many people are blinded by their hate of Chuck. Like we saw in this episode that Chuck actually had nothing to do with Kim's situation and actually doesn't seem to think that it's the right thing to do, when he talked to Howard about it when they were drinking whiskey. Don't get me wrong, he has no great empathy for Kim's situation, he just thinks "ah well, that's Howard's decision". And I think the reason he wants to get her out of Doc Review is just because he thinks she's a good attorney that would be more beneficial to the firm if she was working as an actual attorney (and he can also probably see the writing on the wall that she's gonna leave HHM if they keep this up). So trying to get Kim out of Doc Review is probably self-serving, or at least serving the firm, and not driven by some great compassion he has for her situation. But people trying to spin this as him trying to manipulate Kim away from Jimmy because he thinks she is too good for him or something is pretty ridiculous in my opinion, I don't see any evidence of that. Yes, he's resentful of Jimmy's charm and his ease with people but still. He mostly doesn't seem to resent Jimmy having friends, relationships, a good social life. What he can't stand is the fact that Jimmy uses his people skills to become a better and even sometimes respectable attorney because that's what Chuck can't do.

Chuck's story about his father is fantastic, but I always take it as another instance of him jumping to conclusions about Jimmy rather than it actually being Jimmy, especially (even over time) stealing from family, he probably pilfered some things from the shop hear and there but $14,000 worth of goods or just $14,000 itself? It just doesn't add up to the type of person Jimmy is when it comes to his family, and he broke down at the funeral the most because not everyone is a psycho like Chuck lol,, Jimmy just has a good heart.

I hate people like Chuck. He's trying to play good cop bad cop with the situation to get Kim away from Jimmy because he thinks women like her (and his ex wife by proxy) are too good for Jimmy, and he only gets them with his charm that he's completely jealous of. She knows that Chuck spent years doing to Jimmy what Howard is doing to her now, holding her back.

in this ep, you really see the bitter jealousy Chuck has for his brother. Also, the bathroom scene with Jimmy highlights the difference between public sector and private sector law -- gov't attys are always "overworked and underpaid" :)

Great reaction! I'm glad they took the time to show us that it's Howard keeping Kim in doc review. Lets us know while he's less of a prick than he seemed in S1, he's still A Prick. +1 to Christophe's comment, Kim is great this episode. It's hard for me to read Kim without the meta knowledge that Peter Gould, Vince Gilligan and the crew know what happened to Skyler White and Anna Gunn (actress) and I think they make very good choices with Kim to help avoid unnecessary (unfair) audience hostility. Plus Rhea Seehorn is a hell of an actress, all the casting on this show is so good, they all know how to sell a feeling with a look and I like watching them all ricochet off each other. Seeing Hector had be gagged I forgot that happened here lmao. So fun seeing him speak, like in that one BB flashback. When I was first watching I had no idea the show would go here. Really cracks open the possibility space.

I forgot this is the hector intro and gasped when it cut to the diner with the bell ring. So fun knowing whats about to happen

I love this episode. First of all, it was the episode that really made me fall in love with Kim and Rhea Seehorn. From Kim's powerful, feminist speech to Jimmy, to the classic montage set to a great song, to the soul-crushing look she has when Howard's words become clear to her. Rhea's so great. Then the speech from Chuck to Kim. Michael McKean's obviously brilliant here as well and I love that detail about their backstory. It gives so much context to Chuck and Jimmy's relationship and to Chuck's resentment and it humanizes him so much. And then of course, the reveal of Hector. The fact they had Mark Margolis mostly just play a vegetable in Breaking Bad except for a couple flashbacks was really a waste and it's so great to see him shine here.
