2025-06-01 05:33:34 +0000 UTCThis wins the "I need a class on media comprehension" award. Skyler in episode 8 of this season says that all she wants is her kids and life back. At the end of that episode, she has that. Her, Walt, Marie, Hank, and the kids are all having a good time in the back yard. She doesn't want to lose that. Thats why she doesn't talk to Hank, thats why she doesn't let Marie take Holly. Thats her motivation for how she is acting now, she lost her family once and she doesn't want too again. Is Skyler an angel? Of course not, the show goes out of its way to show that every character, minus Holly, is flawed in some way. You don't need to make up reasons to dislike a character, they are all right there for you to see.

2024-10-27 02:27:48 +0000 UTCI agree with Maple that Skylar is still who she was at the beginning of the show, which is a bit of a Karen who thinks the world should cooperate with her opinion. She is of course partially to blame with keeping things moving (even now) in constant hope of an easy way out, where she doesn't have to tell Walt Jr and the world what her family has done. Her correct action would have been at the start of s3 to leave the house, stay at Hank and marie, file for divorce (and if she has to, rat on Walt). But she wanted the house, the kids, and Walt to leave, and not have to tell anyone anything.

2024-08-17 21:02:18 +0000 UTCWhen it was airing on TV, there was a year long break between when the first and second half of season 5. And it got released on 2 separate DVD sets. And that's how Amazon sells it digitally. Can't just buy season 5. Gotta buy season 5 and "the final season."

2024-08-13 03:39:12 +0000 UTCadding some details to the post-episode discussion: . the writers often say that Walt's superpower is his ability to lie; there are some characters who can see through him most of the time – Skyler, Jesse, Mike, Gus – but i think he gets away with it a lot because people underestimate him . the writers have also said they didn't want to give Walt too much backstory in part because they didn't want the audience to be able to use that to make excuses for his bad decisions . Vince Gilligan worked in a box factory! i think it was his first job, and one of the few jobs he's had besides being a writer. in the commentary for that episode he pointed out that the machine in the scene wasn't actually a corrugator because they couldn't get one . i think the one of the best examples of Walt manipulating the audience is like you pointed out, in the last two eps of S4, where he lies to Jesse about poisoning Brock. apparently in the week between the penultimate and final episodes airing the internet was wildly theorizing and talking about how "Gus' plan didn't make sense!" and it turned out it wasn't Gus' plan at all. it's a great testament to Bryan Cranston's acting, and there are a couple more scenes similar to it before the series finale, where he has to hold multiple emotions/layered intentions at the same time, like straight up lying to Jesse's face (when he was right on the money about the poisoning from the beginning) while trying to convince him that this was Gus' plan all along. just great . bonus: when the writers first introduced Lydia they figured they would want to do aa romance with her but weren't sure who the other character would be, and at one point even considered Walt before landing on Todd.

2024-07-17 13:11:11 +0000 UTCThey're not surprised but annoyed that Walt is so outraged at Saul's suggestion. He is like "How DARE you even say such a thing". Ehm, maybe because most of you committed several murders/are criminals and thats not totally outside the realm of possibility? They react to the way he's reacting. Like he can't even fathom to understand why someone could suggrst such a thing. And thats the exaspetating thing about Walt.

2024-07-17 03:42:30 +0000 UTCFriendly reminder Skylar always had a choice and she chose to get in bed with her boss and then help him launder his money, then gave the money she left her husband for, to her lover, who took it and tried to run with it. She then sent goons to get him. Why do you think she is innocent in all of this? She had a choice to turn Walt in since day one and she didn’t. No, she is not who she was at the beginning of the show, if that were the case she would’ve called in Walt immediately because she was portrayed as the ditzy Midwest housewife who went to meet Jesse to tell him “yo I’m Skylar white bitch, stop selling weed to my husband” she’s only ever covered for him.

2024-07-16 22:03:05 +0000 UTCok the skylar defence is actually wacky now, theyre not understanding her at all, shes literally literally trying to keep the money and get out of this scott free. She didnt even hesitate in earlier seasons to cook the books, she also has a criminal mind.

2024-07-15 19:45:23 +0000 UTCI'm a Skyler fan/defender and I agree, she's complicit. She had several viable outs and chose to come back, sometimes under duress, sometimes not. Skyler's 'fatal flaw' if you want to call it that, is that she doesn't want to destroy the family, even when it would have been better in the long run. She says as much to the divorce lawyer: it will destroy the family + make Walt Jr hate his Dad, Holly grows up without a dad etc. So she eats little horrible choices, until she's in too deep to escape. In retrospect I'm sure she wishes she took that advice, or left New Mexico in Cornered, but hindsight is 20/20. It's not her fault but she's also not blameless. "We all make our choices. And those choices, they put us on a road. Sometimes those choices seems small but they put you on the road. You think about getting off but eventually you're back on it."
Kara
2024-07-15 12:59:53 +0000 UTCShe's legally compromised for sure. The only option that doesn't destroy the family is to stay quiet and hope they get away with it. Anything else, even a best case scenario deal for immunity on her behalf, destroys the family, makes Walt Jr hate her, maybe gets the kids taken away too. Not to mention the money.

2024-07-15 12:51:21 +0000 UTCThere are 2 flashbacks including Walt before the BB timeline, the one you mentioned (skyler and walt viewing the house) and the cold open of 1x3 (young Walt talks to Gretchen about the chemical makeup of the human body + whether the missing inconsistency is the soul) : https://youtu.be/a-Qva8lG4mY

2024-07-15 12:42:01 +0000 UTCGreat reaction and really fun insights at the end, I love all that shit. I used to be deep in the Reddit post-episode discussion threads reading everyone's theories, people are sooo smart. I think Walt is a great liar because he believes his own lies. I agree they did such a great job with casting, especially core roles - Dean Norris looks + feels legitimately shell-shocked these past 2 eps. Honestly I would just be in it for the ride too, it's a great run through to a satisfying and entertaining ending.

2024-07-15 12:38:40 +0000 UTCWell with the compulsive liar thing, there are certain keys that you can tell when walt is telling the truth especially when he is very vulnerable. Like him in the bathroom willing to turn himself in and the walt dad story came after a very vulnerable moment and we know enough about him to know that he wants to be looked at as a strong man. Also stuff like him not wanting to send hank to belize because we know that he has tried to save hank before
Fresh2000
2024-07-15 11:18:58 +0000 UTCWIth how adamant that Walt has been about saving Hank in previous seasons. I honestly never thought he would be fine with sending hank to belize. I don't know just something with me, despite how awful he became. I was surprised to learn, that there were fans out there who'd think he would lol

2024-07-15 10:44:04 +0000 UTCLove what you had to say about Walt as an unreliable narrator and giving the viewer few other sources of information about his life. I think it's also partly a product of a very controlled, narrow POV, which comes from strong writing that trusts the viewer. Characters don't say anything just for the sake of communicating information. They have conversations that feel real and organic. I think there's really only a single flashback about Walt in the whole show - when Walt and Skyler are looking at the house for sale. Even that is only giving us an insight into his character, not shedding light on an event. The writing is so confident, I have nothing but admiration for everyone on the writing team.

2024-07-15 08:56:22 +0000 UTCSkylar admitted early this season that she felt compromised after what happened to ted, plus the money laundering. Love the dialogue pairing of Walt's "Maybe your best course would be to tread lightly" to Skylar's "Maybe our best move is to stay quiet"

2024-07-15 07:37:34 +0000 UTCWell not trying do be sexist at all by this statement but they are looking at Walt from a female and more importantly non criminal perspective. There's some decisions that Walt makes that a man, growing up with the unique pressures and motivations of that gender, would take for granted. Those things may not be handled the way one of us would do it but it still makes sense due to the base instincts/"genetic male hive mind". I'm phrasing it horrible but that's kind of why I think they are a bit misunderstanding of some of Walt's actions or motivations. On the other hand ive found it kind of cool to see the female perspective the girls bring to the table while watching the show as they will point out things I never would have thought of.

2024-07-15 07:25:54 +0000 UTCHe was being real. He feels the people he cares for are off limits to murder. Nothing more or less than that. Believe it or not, just because someone can kill another person, doesn’t mean they are able or willing to kill every single person. People are more complex than just being 100% evil. These girls should know that, yet they’re surprised that Walt doesn’t embrace being 100% evil all the time.
Brandon Williams
2024-07-15 07:16:04 +0000 UTCThey're mad that Walt keeps taking the moral high ground while having little right to. Even Saul doesn't find it that far of stretch for Walt to kill a member of his family after everyone else he's killed this season. They've said from the beginning they just want him to be real. They literally said "thank you" when Walt was being vulnerable with Skylar for once. Literally Maple gave credit to the writers at the end of the ep for how complex Walt's character is.

2024-07-15 05:38:17 +0000 UTCIt's amazing how Skyler was wishing for the cancer to return, but when she found out it did from Walt after he collapsed, she had a delicate change of heart. This show is so true to life. When put in the face of impossible situations we often act out differently then how we imagined we would. Fun fact the coordinates for Walt's money are the real life coordinates to ABQ studios, where the show was produced. They didn't want fans digging holes in the desert looking for Easter eggs and whatnot. The last number of the coordinates is 52... Also Lydia's red bottom heels are a nod to the blood on her hands. ...or feet
Justin
2024-07-15 05:29:32 +0000 UTCThey’re actually surprised that Walt doesn’t want to kill a member of his family (Hank), really? They obviously are horrible at reading and understanding this character. They have no ability to see the nuances and complexity of how Walt is written. They just see evil and that’s it, It’s so beyond ridiculous at this point.
Brandon Williams
2024-07-15 05:24:29 +0000 UTCI'm willing to give a lot of grace to Skyler but I think she can share at least some of the blame for these bad outcomes since when she talked to a lawyer in season 3 that told her to go to the police. She was far too concerned with "how it looks" and not ruining the image of Walt to their son and family and friends and by extension, her own image. She could have prioritized safety and justice above all else a lot sooner, and so many less people would have died as a result. It's similar to a scene in the Sopranos where Carmilla is at a therapist, and he is the only one who is ever frank with her about how monstrous her husband is, and by extension, her complacency. He says that once you know, once you have that opportunity to do something and you do not take it, you can never go back to saying you didn't know or you couldn't have done anything. And although Skyler was compelled by Walt to do a lot of what she did, she also had many opportunities and was even advised legally to get out and turn him in, and she did not do so at every turn, which makes her complicit as well.
