super late ik but im pretty sure he did need it to breathe. earlier in the episode his dad is telling him to take deep breaths since the top of mt everest had a thin atmosphere, implying that even if they can mature to hold their breath for weeks at a time, mark probably isn't there yet at this point in the series.

2023-11-03 02:28:11 +0000 UTCI think you misunderstood the space thing. He didn't need the helmet to breathe. He needed it so there would be air to speak. Mark wouldn't be able to speak to Cecil in the vacuum of space and typing/texting would have been tedious for the viewer.

Love the idea that you have absolutely no expectations of where it might be going because every five seconds the shoe drops and shifts the tone constantly. It is based on comic and the first season covers roughly 10% of the series. There is a lot to come, but these episodes do so much to build the world and these characters.

2023-11-01 20:13:15 +0000 UTCThe sequid switcheroo was a bit confusing. Sequids are the little hive-mind aliens that need a host to unite the mind. Martians are shapeshifters and can reject the sequids, whereas humans can be hosts (and viltrumites are too strong to be taken over). The martians wanted to execute the humans to prevent one of them from becoming the host of the hive-mind. When Mark and the astronauts were leaving, one astronaut was replaced by a martian shapeshifter, which is shown when he rearranged the flag on the space suit. The human he replaced got left behind and became the host of the hive-mind like the martians feared.
