I do think that a lot of the comedy is intentional as an attempt to link to the cheesy sci-fi alien invasion B movies of the 40s and 50s. This is also probably the only self insert of M Night that really works for me, especially with the line about feeling sorry for doing this to you and yours. Very much the writer apologizing to his characters for the pain and torment.
