I remember first watching this on a friend's recommendation and being just enthralled. It's weirdness is right up my alley - and the cinematography is gorgeous. Love it.

I think Red Letter Media nailed it when they said something like, "Everything you need to know about this movie is that the director's name is Panos Cosmatos." :) My theory about Nic Cage is that he's as only good as the director. Pair him up with the Coens or David Lynch and he's gonna elevate his performance. Give him an average director and you get an average performance. Every time I recommend this movie, I just say, "Nic Cage in a chainsaw fight on an alternate Earth" and I let people make their decision from there.

The line of dialogue that jumped out at me was the chemist before he even looks at Red recognises him as a “Jovan warrior straight from the storm”. That is, saying he is a warrior from the storm of Jupiter which connects him back with Mandy and the earlier conversation. Watching Pig would be a good follow up and answer the question, is Nicholas Cage a good actor? His performance in that one is very understated, grounded and empathetic. I see the two movies as inversions of each other, two different paths to revenge. I’ve never seen a Cage movie where the his performance made the movie worse. He’s in plenty of bad movies but I’ve never seen him dialling it in.
