The Legend of Korra 1x1

Comments

I love the callback to katara and sakas grandma catching them sneaking out and basically saying its the right thing to do. Absolutely brutal how granny katara dropped the saka death bomb tho. :'(

I'm reading a book right now that goes a little into the industrial revolution and it did create some significant problems that's resulted in some of the social problems we have today. Aside from that, the timeline for the Avatar universe relative to ours is pretty spot on. I saw a YouTube video where this guy breaks down the history, I think it was hellofutureme, he has probably the best Avatar/writing content on the webs. But yea its pretty accurate to our technological advancements at that time, I think this takes place 70 years after the events of ATLA.

See the difference is that it still very much felt like a fantasy world that blended a bit of tech in a feudalistic society. Korra just feels like it is the straight up real 20s with stereotypical mobsters, radio voice guy and all. ATLA felt very unique where as Korra just felt uninspired. Hell even look at the fighting, in Korra everyone fights the same and pretty much just punches at each other a lot. In ATLA the fighting styles all looked and felt different due to the attention the writers paid to real martial arts styles. One great example of this is in ATLA many of the main characters also have a cool signature move that no one else does IE: Tophs whole style plus metal bending, Zuko had his Capoeira style fire leg sweep, Jeong Jeong had his fire wall and there are several more. Korra had nothing like this.

I think this is what it feels like to be stuck in a previous generation that took place before an enormous change in society (aka aging) lol

You know what? You're right. It has been a while since I've watched this and the circumstances of Aang's journey are vastly different to Korra's. There's no ticking clock, no war to fight in, no comet on the horizon. Korra deals with entirely different problems and her upbringing means that the choices she makes will be similarly different. And you can't forget that she's a teenager that's been sheltered away for the duration of her training. I personally found her annoying in the early days of this show. I've never been a fan of teenagers and the confident, uninformed decisions that they make (as someone who made plenty) but that's a subjective opinion just like how someone may find Aang annoying at times. That characterization is important and if anything it further proves that the writers knew what they were doing.

hurraaaayy legend of korra! P.S. i totally agree about the industrial revolution having a sort of ick factor and liking humanity's format prior to that, and in general preferring stories set before that

These are genuine concerns for the first episode, but you’re right, you just have to give it time. ATLA was lightning in a bottle, and its amazingness will never be replicated, but Korra has the amazing start of building off of that world, while also creating something new. Some of the characters in this world of Korra, are some of my all time favorites, and I’m sure you’ll grow to love them too! Can’t wait for the next couple!!!

There’s never a point in this series when Korra is as annoying as Aang. That criticism was part of the toxic smear campaign that hovered around this show when it came out. The show is exceptionally written and deals with serious issues in a much more mature way. What does an Avatar do? How does the Avatar work within an established and stable political order? How does she balance all the different conflicts that are introduced in ATLA? What does elitism and discrimination look like in the modern world, and how has the Industrial Revolution mitigated or exacerbated those issues? The writers put their big boy pants on for this series.

I'll just echo what others said, give it time. Try not to compare them too much. ATLA has a 3 season + intense emotional lead. One thing that helped me was realising that the 100 year war of ATLA had essentially stalled innovation outside of fire nation weaponry (they invented airships and cannons). Once Aang and Zuko end the war, its sort of inevitable that an industrial revolution style event would happen, and I think it creates a lot of opportunities for excellent storytelling for this show's four seasons, driven by characters (who you'll get to know) and a more complex political setting, which makes sense given we're ~70 years post a global war ending.

Also I believe Tenzin said the bisons name was oggi

am i the only one who thinks the guy with the big lips looks like the prisoners from the boiling rock in Avatar?

Glad you're watching this! It's a great show but it's very different from The Last Airbender. There was a lot of fans questioning this show for quite a while back when it came out. Some of the grievances were awful incel takes (having a woman protagonist) and some were legit (Korra is pretty annoying early on and makes a number of truly boneheaded decisions) but it more than proved itself through it's run time. It has more ups and downs, quality wise, than The Last Airbender did. However if you stick with it I think you will find it a very rewarding show and I hope you enjoy Korra's adventures as much as I have!

Clay

Yeesssssssssssssssssss!!!! This makes me so happy! I'm ready for this journey!

Come on dude, it's really not that hard to figure out their schedule. They clearly record once a week, probably for about 6 or 7 hours, and they upload said recordings every week give or take a couple of days.

Woz Lee

remember they had big warships and airships and giant drills and tanks and all sorts of stuff that didnt exist until our 20th century. ba sing se was a huge thriving city. also you have to remember that there are benders, who are capable of creating massive amounts of power and work. they could replace complex and precise tools that we need with just using bending. using it for something like construction or research would be very productive so you would expect them to advance quickly. its been about 75 years since aang died so thats also plenty of time for things to progress.

Time period wise, in ATLA the Fire Nation has a massive fleet of steam powered warships, which would put them roughly in the mid-1800's in technology. A 70 year time jump would put them almost exactly in a 1920 equivalent.

GYRECK GAMING

Unless you think steam punk is lame as hell and the 20s are a crap setting for anything that isn't mobsters during prohibition or the Peaky Blinders.

Ronald Foster

So far it seems like y'all are going to have the same kind of feelings as I had for this show. I don't love it but I don't hate it, either. It has so much potential but suffers from the behind-the-scenes/production shit. They were only cleared for each season, individually, and I think it affects the pacing/overarching storyline. Korra as a character has so much potential!

Christmas J. Seabolt

Don't want an existential crisis...well...that won't come back in book 2 or 3...nope...not at all

Richard Z Herrera

The industrial revolution R U L E D. So does Steam Punk. This show's takes on them, especially the first season, are Fkn fantastic, Get over it.

Diiirk706

Wasn’t the latest succession reaction supposed to be posted today?

Rabbott

The characters in this show are much deeper than you are giving them credit for. Much like Avatar, most of your questions will be answered eventually. Give it time. Books 1, 3, and 4 are amazing. Book 2 is still pretty good, but is the weakest of the 4. Yes, this show is more political, darker, and more mature than ATLA. Do not compare them. They are completely different shows.

rrrebo

All these lil whiny Bitches in da comments😂😂😂😂😂 #SuuuuuuuuckIt

Diiirk706

I wish you would post more Breaking Bad reactions. It's hard to justify my subscription with no real schedule. Will just have to come back next year and binge them since there's no way of knowing how often they'll be posted.

A L

Pobrecitas. Hope they at least find more joy in this than I did.

Zorro

Before s1 is over they’d have long forgotten the time skip and setting criticism they had. That’s how well these shows are written.

shinji_86

Korra is 17 after the time skip, and was only trained in the south pole the whole time. Because of that, she thinks the Avatar is supposed to be a superhero, and that’s why she doesn’t think she did anything wrong after stopping the gang. She’s a combination of the traits that Katara, Toph and Zuko had (and hey, she knows Waterbending, Earthbending & Firebending already).

Alvin Everett

this show takes place 70 years after atla and aang died relatively young at only 66 because being in the iceburg wore his body out. Korra is 17 in S1 of korra, 4-5 years older than aang is in atla. and going by what katara said we only know that sokka is dead. she didnt specify anyone else

Jayshawn Robinson

Sheesh...

I didn't expect ya'll to jump on it immediately, but it's a welcome surprise :D
