Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Admit it if you got triggered... lol

Arianna showed Maple Harry Potter!

Comments

Also I don't think the movies ever explain it, but the reason Quirrell couldn't touch Harry is because Harry's mother saved Quirrell's life at one point and then sacrificed her life for Harry. So Quirrell trying to harm Harry warped the spell Lily used to save Quirrell into a curse, making it unbearable for Quirrell to actually touch him.

Athasin

Yeah it's actually interesting that people forget Harry *killed* his first person at the young age of 11.

Athasin

do you guys plan to revisit the rest of this series? :)

NJ

The extended edition do show them "cooking" Dudley old clothes. Also, Harry Potter never actually used a single spell in this movie xD You can actually see the house points counter (vertical cylindrical glass) behind the teacher's row in the great hall to the right corner (if you are facing them)

FatLittleButterfly

I'm just tired of hearing people say "I don't read Harry Potter because JK Rowling is Transphobic" or any variation of that nonsense. Read good books because they're good. Leave politics out of it. EDIT: The original title was "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" if I'm not mistaken, so I don't see any problem with that LOL.

Andrew Shuffett

lmao

Jake H

I have to admit, 10 year old me might have been turned off by a female writer, so they had a point

Aidan Aldrich

i was referring to me titling the movie philosophers stone rather than sorcerer's stone, not jk rowling but i see this is a touchy subject for you

Chad Gloria

Haha I find the idea of being triggered by Harry Potter ridiculous. The books are phenomenal. The movies aren't as good, but they do a better job of adapting a book to a screenplay than most movies based on books. That being said, leave your politics and stupid opinions about J.K. Rowling to the side and enjoy a heartfelt story about love triumphing over the wicked ways of our world. What J.K. Rowling believes has little to do with the story of Harry Potter, and despite her "controversial" opinions, it is full of diversity, and does a great job of showcasing some really tough themes.

Andrew Shuffett

I'm watching the intro and that is exactly how I feel I love, love, loved the books (read them multiple times) and I've watched all the movies but I can never go back to movies 1-3 because they are really kiddie for me, especially with the acting. I read the Deathly Hallows in half a day.

Wendy

Loved the Harry Potter movies growing up! I also aged with them, one of my favorites and looking forward to the rest of the reacts to the series. ALSO yall should do the pottermore quiz for house!

Indulgence42

Yes, McGonagall loves quidditch. Her name is on the trophy/plaque right next to Harry's dad. McGonagall played on the same team with James Potter.

rrrebo

So the Appa plushies have now transcended ATLA hahaha, love it

Alex Burchill

Not at all

Kage Uzumaki

Ooh, I'd forgotten about Children of Men. It'd be an amazing reaction!

Jeff I.

it is! because philosopher's stone is an actual thing in ancient studies of alchemy. I think American publishers thought the word would be too complex for kids, idk. They make all kinds of bizarre decisions. Even the name "JK Rowling" was selected by the publisher because they didn't want young boys to know a woman wrote it (cooties i guess lmao). She doesn't even have a middle name, K is just taken from her mother or grandmothers first name lol.

Just to add a differing opinion to the conversation - I know everybody loves PoA. And viewed in isolation, I think it's a pretty good movie. Cuaron is certainly masterful and stylish. Children of Men is one of my favorites movies ever - and I'd love to see more reactions to this masterpiece. Still - for me personally, the first two Harry Potter movies were the only ones that really transported the feeling of the books and didn't deviate significantly. All the other ones let me down quite a bit in terms of what they did to the characters and/or the story. While I like the later stories and books better (4 is probably my favorite) - the earlier movies are better as adaptations for me, and 3 is definitely my favorite of the run from 3-7.2. I was and am especially in love with the set of the Headmaster's office in HP2. It's so magical. When I first saw that movie and that set (having been a fan for a while at that point), I immediately fell in love.

Michael Bauer

cant wait for the third one :)

overdev

Agreed

Chad Gloria

I love it when people watch harry potter for the first time. The best reactions are always when they go from the chamber of secrets to the glorious Prisoner of Azkaban. It is easily the best movie in the series and really sets the tone for the movies to come. Cannot wait to watch y'alls reaction.

Ventena

because i'm teasing y'all. jesus the fun police need to be defunded.

Chad Gloria

OMGGGGGG YESSSSSS

Lauren B

ayeeeee. I hope this was inspired by my comment not too long ago about how you guys are reacting to HP soon. LOL can't wait to watch this later!!

Jonah Bertorelli

I thought it was 'Philosopher's' haha. Triggered or not Maples reaction has the best calming effect

Alex Burchill

Such a fun reaction! So great to have Arianna be able to fill in some book knowledge for Maple. What we really need is a VLOG when they both go to Florida to experience the theme park after the movie journey is over!

Ian Forbes

Excited for this! Will be interesting to see both how Maple takes to the franchise as a basically first-timer, and how Arianna finds the films again as a book-fan. I was a film-first person and didn’t crack open the first book until I had watched the last film (I also was just out of college when the first movie released so I didn’t grow up with the books). I prefer getting the fuller backstory and seeing what was left out after I’ve enjoyed the film adaptation for what it was. Watching a movie after reading the book, I‘ve generally found it hard to temper expectations and to forgive cutting whole subplots for the sake of pacing/budget/runtime.

Ian Forbes

Maple fears the parliament

Jim Frykman

The weird thing about these movies is, there's just a ton of stuff that looks dangerous but wasn't at all and then a bunch more that didn't look dangerous at all that was extremely so. The flying candles in the Great Hall were real candles on invisible wire in filming and they kept nearly burning the set down. For subsequent films, they relied on CG. And in this film, the chess scene was accomplished by practical effect When Rupert Grint was filming the fall-off shot, he took a real hit to the face from a chunk of the statue he'd been riding. I remember thinking it looked silly on screen, but it ended up being probably one of the more dangerous things the production did.

TheToweringOtakunt

excited to see maple's opinion of the series and thank you chad for using the one and only correct title

dom

As an American, i always thought philosophers stone was a better title

Eric Wallace

Oh damn thank god lol. No im American as well and I assumed you were talking about JK Rowlings controversy, I'm excited for this react though!

Ethan Bacio

Ohh lol. Wasn't the real title Philosopher's Stone before getting Americanized anyway? I've avoided seeing or reading the entirety of Harry Potter since it came out due to a complicated personal grudge but have absorbed some trivia over the years.

Dustin Nelson

Because I called it the "Philosopher's" Stone rather than the "Sorcerer's" Stone. I got the uber serious crowd today. Maybe the American's aren't awake yet.

Chad Gloria

Oh; that was my first guess but I figured that would've been too lowbrow/easy for us here 🫤

Dustin Nelson

I’m assuming it’s because of all the controversy behind it and of jk rowling

Leon

Triggered for why?

Dustin Nelson
