Interesting, I didn't know that! Though in this case Alice wasn't given a choice :(

It also didn't help the show that ABC decided to moved it to Fridays which is basically known as a death slot if a show moves there.

One of the writers of the episode, Leah Fong, said the pills were actually a Matrix reference, where the main character was given a choice between a red pill to be free or a blue pill (the color of the pills in the episode) to stay in the simulated reality. Apparently they even references Alice's Adventures in Wonderland during it as well.

Such a good episode!!!! I definitely wish they had spent Season 4-6 showing Rumple grow and overcome the darkness rather than watching him backslide and be abusive, but they really outdid themselves with this episode and rectified it as best as they could. It was a Beauty πŸ™‚ I really like Season 7 too! I wish more people had given it a shot when it aired but so many people just couldn’t handle the show taking a different focus.

rest in piece Belle 😭❀️ i think someone mentioned it, but i love that we get to see more pixar references this season, like the similarities with the β€œUp” Montage. now we’re on the hunt for β€œThe Guardian” and I can’t wait!

Regarding Alice/Tilly and the pills, that's another one of those situations on this show where the writers just didn't realize the implications. The pills are meant to be an allusion to the mushrooms in the movie (in this episode Alice even mentions how they make her "small"), and in this case the pills *are* a bad thing. But you're absolutely right, when the whole thing is paralleled with the real world, it's not a good look, especially the part where Rumple/Weaver gives them to her against her will. I have always wondered why she decided to stop taking them in the first place when she'd seemingly not done so before, but maybe it's because things started changing when Henry arrived in town, like with Emma in season 1. So yeah, unfortunately that situation is just one where you can't look too deeply into it. I do think, though, that it's overall a good thing they're addressing mental health at all, and that it's done both with a character that makes sense (of all Disney canon, Alice in Wonderland is the one to do it with) and that she's such an enjoyable protagonist. There's no "mental health issues = evil" going on here, nor is Alice presented as incapable or infantilized. In fact, Rumple calls her "the best eyes and ears in Hyperion Heights." Considering the show's abysmal track record with representation, in my opinion they generally do a very good job with Alice. And on top of that, she's queer! No token one-off episode for her, and she's a semi-main character to boot. It's about damn time. The actress, Rose Reynolds, really does a spectacular job in the role. I had a feeling you'd like this season, and I'm really glad you do so far. It only gets better from here! Oh, and a fun bit of obscure trivia: In the book, "Tillie" is one of the characters in the story the dormouse tells.

I loved you got Mad Hatter vibes from Alice as I think that was the intent of the writers. Tilly does struggle with her mental health and I think that representation was so important. And I loved that there was multiple nods to her queerness in this episode. 🌈 I’m so glad you’re loving this season. In my opinion it’s the most emotional one, for sure.

Tilly has my whole heart! second favorite character only beaten by Regina. She's such a great character and I loved how she was in this episode, but I did found troublesome that they did the parallel with medication for mental health, I understand why they did it, I feel (IMO) that it was a portrayal to "Mad Alice" that we see in some stories, and you were right, it was a very mad hater kind of vibe. While Im not that on board with Rumple and Belle (specially because of how of abuser he was in season 6) but that montage... it gets me every time (and yeah it was the "Up" montage) it just gets right into your heart, also I like that parallel where Belle fells and Rumple catches her, since thats how they story "begins" (Belle's first episode in the show) and I love that we get to see Gideon, loved that everything worked out for him. Aside that, really strong episode (one of my favorite of the show) I loved how it give us some answers about a big part of what OUAT was and still it sets some big stuff for this season, that Im not gonna get into but it actually was a semi-reveal in her that you missed but it makes me excited for when you get to see the actual reveal. Anyway, great reaction! Im really really glad that you're liking this season, next episode I can't remember it that well but 6 to 9 ufff love those episodes and can't wait to see your thoughts on it! See you in the next one πŸ™ŒπŸ»

I think a lot of us were waiting for you to get to this one haha! I agree its one of the best of the series, and I think season 7 has a couple of episodes like thatβ€” at least many of the best character beats, emotional grounding, and surprising friendships the show has seen in a while. Excited for you to see more!
