The Cas, Crowley and Dean field trip is easily one of my favorite parts of this season! I have always wanted more Crowley especially with his humanity showing and he easily carries the day as the MVP. The emotional nausea streak is next so I got some skipping ahead.

This is one of my favorites along with several from this season. I really like the twist from last time when we find out that Zeke is actually someone else entirely. But of all the things that I love about this episode is, when Dean called Cas he came straight away. After pushing Cas away for weeks as soon as he is needed, he comes to Dean's side. He had Dean's back, without question.

I don't know if dean was keeping the seat for Sam, he gave cas an explanation for why he needs him to set next to Crowley, he said: keep an eye on him, he just doesn't trust Crowley & if dean & cas are sitting in the front staring at each other like they usually do, Crowley can pull off something to screw them over or at least that's what dean believes/fears, Cas is so smart to think of that angel torture device to save Sam, this is why they need him, he's very knowledgeable, resourcefull & smart & can stay objective when everyone else is defeated by despair, not to say that they only need him coz he's useful, coz he's also emotionally needed but he also brings so much to the table, when crowley starts torturing sam, cas immediately looks away, he knows how painful it is because he's been tortured by the same device, so more sam & cas parallels, i feel that when sam said that he was willing to die here he wasn't just referring to the first episode in this season, he was also referring to the trials, coz i feel like sam was ready to die to shut the gates of hell but didn't do it because/for dean & he must feel guilty about that, that's probably why he was ready to die at the beginning of this season, yet like you said if he was gonna die anyway then what was the point of not closing the gates, metatron giving gadreel the name of his boyfriend's vessel to kill as the only way to prove his loyalty! what a dick, I can't believe supernatural just threw at us this blink & you'll miss it tragic love story of two angels who were locked in heaven's jail for years and one of them (gadreel) thought the prison guard killed the other (anber) & finally got his revenge on that guard who used to torture his partner for fun only to find out that his partner is alive & haven't looked for him (but even worse maybe anber too though gadreel was dead sob) not only that but he has a whole family now & wants to stay with them & that metatron ordered him to kill his boyfriend (using the vessel's name so gadreel wouldn't know right away who he's being ordered to kill) as the only way to prove his loyalty to him & get a second chance, a do over, yet of course he hesitates, he talks with anber hoping anber would say something that would convince him not to do it, to change his mind, but anber tells him to go after what he wants no matter what the cost grimacing, we saw a glimpse of what gadreel faced for all these years when cas got very mad & blamed him for ruining the universe, what was god thinking leaving the protection of the garden of Eden for just one angel! What was that angel gonna do against lucifer, let's be honest, gadreel had no chance, he made one mistake & was punished for all of human existence, feels like he was the scapegoat, he's very desperate for approval, for a second chance at proving himself & metatron knows & uses this, of course this is not the way to go & killing Kevin & anber is too far, he must be very desperate to do that but doesn't make it right or excuse it of course

I ultimately agree with you: it was wrong. I (personally) only meant to say, if I'm honest, I'd very likely have made the same choice as Dean 🙂. I'd have to accept the repercussions and blame to follow.

While I understand Dean's point of view, I am still on Sam's side on this just like I was 8 years ago when this first came out. Dean tricked Sam into giving a another being permission to possess him. Flat out. Not on.

Okay… This is going to sound like I'm being an apologist, and perhaps I am. I'd likely have an impulse to @me over it. Thing is...unless my sister had signed a DNR, if she was in a coma, there's simply no way on God's green earth I would let her die. 🤷
I don't agree with everything Dean does of course -- what a boring character he'd be if I did -- but if I'm being fair, Dean couldn't ask for Sam's choice in the hospital. He could guess--I mean, *I* could guess if push came to shove and my sister was in a coma… But if I'm standing there left with a choice and time was of the essence, I'd choose to keep her alive and deal with the consequences later. (And she can be scary, believe me. I'd hide *behind* Hell's gates instead of closing them.) There's no coming back from death (for us) or asking for forgiveness after it, and for Dean, the glimpse he was given told him Sam's death would be final.
Since the entity sent into Sam's mind in the "Death cabin" was Gadreel, the only time Dean could potentially have talked to Sam was after Gadreel had walked Sam's body out of the hospital and simultaneously warned Dean that, if Dean told Sam, Sam would expel Gadreel and die anyway. Then Gadreel was in charge, with all his powers. I feel like from that point on, it was a bit of a hostage situation, with Dean buying time and buying time, hoping things would work out.
Obviously, in an ideal world, Sam would have – rather, should have – been given a choice. In his shoes, I'd feel godawful, and guilt-ridden, and shell-shocked, and betrayed… just…oof. Like I said, I don't agree with everything Dean does, but I dunno… I've gone back and forth on it, and I honestly can't in good conscience say I'd have made a different choice in that hospital. All sh@& shows that followed would have been on me too.

oh ad another thing. to answer your question about why they kept acting like sam was going to fall apart and then act like he is all good.
i think during the episodes where dean told sam he was barely keeping it together was at a time when sam was questioning what was going on. it was an easy answer - the trials messed you up so you feel extra tired, extra rough, this and that. and dean knew sam couldn't really question him on it. even though he had his suspicions.
on top of that, i think because gadreel was so afraid of the angels finding out who he was, because as soon as metatron and that other angel saw him, they instantly knew who he was and that he wasn't ezekiel, he was buying time. telling dean that sam was much worse than he probably was because like sam not being able to really fight dean on the trial reasons, dean couldn't really fight gadreel on this because he needed him to save sam and trusted him to know better but when gadreel left, cas could actually see that yes sam was still not a 100% but he was also not as bad as gadreel probably made it seem.
i hope this makes sense !

as dark and serious as this episode is, its also a lot of fun and exciting. i like season 9 as a whole and i think its a great continuation of season 8 and knowing what's gonna happen next, i think it flows nicely as a whole story. hard to remember what it felt like when i was watching the episodes once a week and had to wait to find out what happens next lol
i find it interesting how all the angels blamed gadreel for what happened in the garden. that he was the one who ruined the universe. not the serpent aka lucifer himself. i can only make the connection that god himself made everyone believe it was one angels fault and that it was easier to just lock him up forever and then disappear leaving the mess because god couldn't admit that it was his own son, lucifer, who had done it. which then goes back to gabriel and michael and everyone else always saying that he was gods favourite and as soon as god made his new toys, aka us, he got so jealous he wanted to destroy it which caused him to get locked up yet the blame still stayed with gadreel. which now that i think about it feels like a slight plot hole or them just wandering off the canon that we know ?? idk maybe that's just me misunderstanding this whole thing and looking too deep into this haha
with a baggage like that i feel like i can't even bame gadreel for wanting to save heaven. for trusting metatron. the idea that this time around he could be the one that saves heaven and leads everyone home and that this is what he would be remembered for and not "ruining everything" like cas said. the methods he is using aren't great and there's no justification.
i think metatron is also very much enjoying the power play knowing gadreel will do whatever it takes and kill anyone he asks to prove his loyalty and he isn't afraid to remind him of that and throw it in his face.
it is also interesting that we as an audience, we see all the characters and what they are up to . we know what metatron has done and what he is planning to do and we know to not trust him. gadreel hasn't. he doesn't know. so if it came down to being loyal to dean winchester and the gang verses his own kind and the "scribe of god" with all the answers, im not surprised he betrayed us and dean.
can't wait for the next episode. its gonna be a ride

Ugh yes! This is honestly one of my biggest problems with Dean! (I mostly love him, but he’s honestly my least favourite of the main characters...) He talks about Free Will all the time, claims they’re fighting for it and all that, but the second Sam or Cas use said free will to do something he doesn’t like, he gets all pissy. And he’s literally taken sams free will from him for the entire first half of this season. That’s my problem with dean. It’s very much “free will except when I don’t like what you’re doing then it’s my way or nothing.”
I know I sound like I’m hating him, but it just really pisses me off...

In fairness to Crowley, he did technically use the language "make best efforts to return your soul" 🤣 while it may be dirty, he technically isn't breaking his deal.

Another Really Good episode! Loved the uncomfortable road trip with Dean, Cas & Crowley. Can't wait for the next couple episodes!

Here me out, what if Crowley didn’t respected Bobby’s deals because he liked how he kissed him (he used tongue after all👀) so he wanted him in hell for himself 🤔

Now this will be short but think about this. We have a nice parallel of gadreel with both sam and cas.
But who are the parallels for dean this episode?
Think about the free will debate and how dean has treated anyone who wants to stop hunting or working the job. Is he letting people choose or manipulating them into staying?
What characters share similar attitudes or methods?

Sam and Cas are so great together. I love their mutual understanding.
