Pick a lane! You're saying Sam should have died to close the gates of hell but wanted Dean to rescue him from heaven? Let's say Death didn't give Sam the approval that his death would be permanent (since that was his stance in the premiere, no more returns), he would be stuck in hell under the gates or a ghost since the gates of heaven were closed. That would be the end of the show.
Personally I love the brothers but it sucks that they pinned the survival of the show on Dean being the bad guy. The gates never-ending debate will never be resolved because they never clarified what that truly meant . Like we see this season that the gates of heaven closing screwed ghosts, left them stuffed in the veil. How fun would it be if closing the gates to hell meant that our world would be overcrowded by both sides and the angels! Good times! Can the trials not be restarted? Since they know the drill now, I would think it's super easy, barely an inconvenience! Why were the demon bombs a one season wonder? Where is the Levi tablet? Shouldn't Kevin have had a God level power as well like Cas did with the angel one? It was a good enough idea but it barely carried the storyline and was handled badly, tainting an already tenuous brother relationship that was supposed to be the selling point of the series.

I agree that the actor playing young Dean did a great job and it is too bad they couldn’t use Colin Ford (young Sam) in this episode. In the flashback, Sam would be around 12 and Colin can’t play 12 anymore, he’s getting too tall. I’m remembering the flashback of him and young Amy. Even in “After School Special” a few seasons ago, he played Sam as a 14 year old.
You know now what happened with the Ezekiel storyline since you are in season 12 while I’m leaving this comment, I agree that Dean should not have lied to Sam about that. I think Dean understood that Sam was ready to die when Death came to take him and Dean was afraid that if he told Sam, Sam would still be willing to expel Ezekiel and die before he could heal and Dean couldn’t have that.
I don’t know, just a thought…

That actor did a great job playing young dean, i completely agree with everything you said here, i would love for Sam & dean to take a break for a bit and get a well deserved reunion after, to explore other options for a bit, Sam kinda did that twice, Stanford & Amelia but dean didn't, except for one episode free to be you & me but that wasn't them separating on good terms so we couldn't even enjoy that, i totally hate john, he's the source of all of dean's issues, any father figure is better than him (bobby, sonny), he chose revenge over his kids, threw Sam at dean to raise & ingrained in dean that his worth is what he can provide for Sam, i wish dean could take Sam away from john but i imagine it wouldn't be that easy, john wouldn't have let him, i definitely saw the parallels with Timmy & dean, they both need to let go someone they love, it could be Sam & it could also be john coz he's a parental figure like Timmy's mom, dean wasn't born loving hunting, no kid would, it was ingrained in him that that's all he can have, the family business & looking after Sammy, even though now Sam isn't a kid, that's all dean knows, he doesn't know a life where he isn't sam's parent, his happiness doesn't really matter, imo the only solution for this is to have more people in your life, to expand the circle, to have a life where he isn't just sam's parent, preferably someone who isn't easily killed (cough Cas cough), those who can fend for themselves, those who are already in the fight, john left dean in a boys home for stealing bread for Sammy for gambling like john taught him to do in the first place to earn money!!! I just wow whenever i think i can't hate john more he surprises me, What's even more heartbreaking to me is that dean keeps defending john, everytime Sam tries to point out John's failures, dean defends him, Sam doesn't hero worship his dad like dean, he doesn't have that rose color glasses on when it comes to john, and i understand why dean has it but it still hurts that he will blame himself but never john, great reaction, Shelley
