Anna died to show that the angels have no free will. She fell, but when Castiel gave her to the angels she was basically reprogrammed to follow the rules. They love the female characters. Everyone close to the boys who dies has a reason for their death. It sucks, but there it is.

This is a fan favorite episode. There's a lot going on and a lot of information. I don't usually like time travel episodes in shows. There's so much potential for there to be holes. But supernatural has done theirs well. A log of opportuntities for inconsistencies to happen. It would have really messed up everything if John and Mary had kept their memories about what happened. Would have changed the timeline and what happens. Just thinking back on what we saw in season 1 and what we've learned about how they were raised. No way John would have let Mary die, and to ensure her not dying would be for Sam to not live. It likely would have caused a rift in their relationship. But I do think that Mary also would not have gone through with things either. Not if it meant that Sam would end up being a vessel for lucifer. I was also mad about Anna's death. I didn't like that they got rid of her. It's what the show does. The have characters they don't use much, but those characters are also there for a reason. To use them at times like this. Use a character we already know and get some kind of punch out of it. But also, during this time, there were fans who hated on any character that was a potential love interest for one of the boys. So the female character's you've seen so far who've ever had a make out scene with one of the boys and looked to maybe be a relationship potential, was hated on and treated pretty nastily by some fans. That's partly why there are so few. The death of Jo and Ellen was one way to "get rid" of them while also serving a purpose. Same with Anna. She was there, and they wanted to close that character thread. I'm not trying to give excuses, because the was very male centered. Im sure there are lots of articles out there talking about this subject. About the show and angels and religion. Well, the creator's really are not being "biblical" for any reason other than for story parts. In fact, Kripke was dead set against having angels on the show for the first 3 seasons. He didn't intend for it to get "biblical". Not at all. But it kind of had to go that way once angels came on. But, they have their own way of treating things. They do not show much respect to a particular religion, actually. Just use it for material. No worries though about criticizing the show. I do it all the time. I still love the show, but I have no problem pointing out things I don't like, or things I think could have been done better.
