Hi everyone! Recently, we gathered in the server and had a wonderful workshop. This workshop was focused on exploration, experimentation, and thinking of voice beyond "individual parameters". 10 participants helped lead the way between tons of experimentation, silly noises, vocal gender exploration, and much more.
While we often discuss voice as a series of components such as resonance, weight, pitch, etc, these are simplifications that make it easier for beginners to aurally recognize different aspects of the sound quality. In reality though, the voice is far more than just a few basic components. The intersections of these components, and the intersections of intersections creates a combinatoric explosion of possibilities. The downside to thinking of the voice as parameters is it can actually make it harder to explore multiple "parameters" at once.
Typically, beginners tend to think bottom-up in voice. Where by adding together basic elements, an output is created. However, in this workshop we explore why a top-down perspective is so valuable, beneficial, and functional.
In a bizarre way, by thinking of voice in a more holistic and "all at once" kind of way, it actually allows us to reach a wider variety of sounds, learn to intersect basic parameters better, and is often less frustrating as it requires far less micromanagement. So even though we are "doing more" is actually more simple on the user end!
The reception to this event was extremely positive so I'm hoping this video and audio if it will be useful for future listeners!
There is one problem... after recording this, I realized the video resolution was extremely low because I forgot to switch screen capture resolution higher after teaching lessons earlier that day and just recording audio. Nevertheless, the audio is the real important part and the chat can still be read if you don't mind some pixilation. There are a few important visual demonstrations I did but those are visible as well -- just fuzzier.
warmly,
z
