I enjoy thinking about this episode, juxtaposed alongside ‘The Benders’. The way show asks the questions of what and who are the real monsters, as well as the gray area of doing some bad for the “greater good”. In my mind, the fact that Kripke and other writers, chose to make a show with so many layers is one of the main reasons it has lasted this long.

Good reaction, and I really enjoy your discussions about the episode and what your take from it is.
I really like this episode, and have from the first time I saw it. I was getting really jazzed about the ramped up feel I got from season 2 at this point. And I really enjoy the character stuff we were getting. That's meaty stuff for me.
It may be silly to some, but I loved that scene where the Impala appears and we get a happy Dean. I was getting all sorts of Feels for that boy at this point. Seeing him so happy at being back on the road, hunting, with his car was pretty cool. It made me feel hopeful that we'd be getting season 1 Dean back. Little did I know. That Dean isn't back, and may not be able to come back, given everything that's happened. sigh - but this is looking interesting
Dean's plans of getting the old mojo back didn't go so well. Trying to use the job to cover what he doesn't want to deal with isn't working so well. I hadn't realized how black and white hunting had been for him before. But it makes sense. It's simple. In a life that's chaotic, that's an achor. Someting needs killing, you kill it. Job done. It's what he knows. John made it the focus of their lives. Now, that's changing? eek! John isn't there anymore as another anchor providing stability and direction. They're on their own, and big brother dean will of course see it as his responsibility to take on John's role. Does he feel up to it?
Back when I first saw this episode, I starting seeing that maybe Dean really did feel like he had to keep that game face on for Sammy. His little brother. Big brother making everything seem OK. That maybe it had just become habit for him and he just didn't consider it any other way. He's there to protect Sammy, and not Sammy there to help him. As the Big Brother he's gotta stay strong. I know. Messed up thinking. That's how I thought of it.
I think Dean was starting to see Gordon as a kindred spirit. Someone like him. Someone he can relate to, who would understand things. Who saw things like he did. That bubble got burst, and it was largely thanks to Sam. His little brother is there for him in ways that really matter. Even if Dean doesn't see it that way at first and gets bull headed. He could have really been unconsciously looking towards Gordon to replace that role John had. John gave Dean a path to follow. Gave him the rules to hunt by. Gordon seemed to have a similar affect on him.
Dean's opinion of Gordon started to change pretty quick when he walked in on him torturing the vampire. That didn't seem to sit well with him. Nice to see that even if he's gung ho to kill vampires, he's not keen on torturing them. But when Gordon took hold of Sam, that was likely IT for Dean. Someone doing that to his brother would not sit well with Dean at all. That may have meant more to Dean on seeing Gordon as no good than the vampire situation. And finding out Gordon killed his sister probably struck Dean on how different he really is from Gordon. Killing a sibling is likely the last thing Dean would like hearing.
nteresting to learn more about vampires in this episode. Last season it seemed like they were considered close to being wiped out, but guess not. This episode had me wondering if maybe more are just getting better at blending in, like the ones in this episode.
I'm not familiar with anything Stirling did before SPN, so I don't know how much work he did earlier. He was pretty good in this one, and apparently he really enjoyed doing this episode and he and the boys would hang out after filming. From what I hear. It's really nice having really talented actors working with our boys. Someone they can get into working with in scenes. I definitely enjoy it when we get some really meaty stories and really good guest stars who can do them justice.
The last scene was so cool. I love these boys and scenes like that really help make that happen.
